1.
I only did that to get the photo, but yes I have the casters on the bottom one and then the top one just sits on the top. I'll only use the casters for transporting them and will take them off when gigging them...
Good plan
2. Now THATS cool. Id love to know how this compares to your Mesa.
3. Yep, got to remember the first fret on a Warwick seems much further away of you are used to a more traditional setup. Thats what put me off the most....I enjoy that F and it was a pain to play it!
4.
Have you tried BareFaced? Just askin'...
I did, and unfortunately that wasnt my thing as well. I tested a Compact....and I couldnt get on with it. The Orange 1x15, which is not as light, sounded much fuller to me.
5. Whilst we are discussing the whole 'boutique' label, (and this is something Ive discussed with one of my guitarist friends who loves high end gear) when exactly does a company come to the point when they are no longer 'boutique'? For example, a bassist friend of mine loves playing bass, but he does not read into all the different specs and new manufacturers. When I showed him my Aguilars, he was very impressed. He thought Aguilar was boutique, as they are still quite specialist and fairly costly. The same for Orange before they became much more popular a few years back. Matamp I suppose now is the more boutique manufacturer. Now I know over the past year, Aguilar have become bigger and we've seen some larger bands leave Ampeg to switch to Aguilar. The same seems familiar with Sadowsky and Lakland, but Ive seen that many adverts and discussion over them that id probably say they are getting fairly common. Ok, not so much the 'real deal' USA made instruments, but the name itself is becoming well known. Mesa is even fairly boutique, despite the massive use in the guitar world. Very pricey, more so over here, and from what I hear, very very good gear. Its the same with Markbass. When I first heard of them, I couldnt get my head around the sizes of their amps. They are still quite pricey compared to a normal brand... The first time I tested a LM2, I was sold, instantly. I couldnt believe how full and warm it sounded, yet very very sweet in the high end. I have very little experience with their cabinets....apart from a few tests in stores, but ive never found any problems with it. It seems very very solid, and full in tone. I think once we all start really enjoying our gear, we do become 'gear snobs', and im the same now. After my brief ownership of Ampeg, I wont be going back, (unless its a vintage SVT and Ive got a personal assistant). I also think, once you get to a certain level of amps/cabs, the price differences dont actually do THAT much. My first cabinets were Peavey....plain awful but did the job. I then switched to the Ampeg 8x10, (a step up, but I didnt really like it that much) and also bought the full Orange stack, (personally, I think it sounds awesome and the 1x15 is the best 1x15 ive ever had the pleasure of hearing). I then sold the Ampeg 8x10 and bought the Aguilars, and now theyve gone for a slightly smaller version of the same setup, (I have still not found anything that sounds like the Aguilars). I also kept reading up on the TC thread, and after loving the amp, and hearing even the Berg fans loving the TC cabs, I went for those as well. And it seems at the right time as well, as the prices have risen a little, (although they are still reasonable). Ive also owned Berg and other brands in between. Long journey. I still want a light 4 ohm 'fairly' compact and fairly rugged but full sounding cabinet, but perhaps im asking too much.
6. I thought most Warwicks were at most 16.5mm? Unless ordered differently .
7. Am I correct in thinking a Stingray 5 has a 17.5mm string spacing? Does anyone know the spacing on Warwick Streamer 5s? ($$ if that makes any difference). Im hoping the Ray 5 has a slightly larger spacing.
8. One of my basses thats no longer mine did this a while back...because the tone was always set to max (this doesnt happen now!). Basically, I popped it into my local store. He just said the best bet is to turn the knobs a few times. Carefully obviously. After 2-3 minutes of this, it was fine.
9. I was quite 'interested' (please note if I go for the Stingray 5 ive been wanting for years, any new gear is out of the question for a LONG time...) in the Markbass New York 122 and Club 12. Apparently the speakers and crossover are redesigned. Markbass is all about clarity so surely there cabinets should be aiming for that. Those 4x6 and 4x8 cabs are awesome in their size. Ive not tried one but Ive seen one and they are tiny.
10. Cool, thanks for the review I was all set on one of these, but the very trebly sound a few players have noted has put me off. I owned a Deluxe P for a while, and it wasnt my cup of tea. I think ill be sticking with the American Standards...purely as at heart with a Fender Im a passive guy. WIll be interested to see a few more of these. That is a an unusual sunburst actually...not in a bad sense, just a very red deep burst
11.
If you are prepared to fork out for an AE410 it's worth spending a few extra quid on a protective cover. I gig mine 2-3 times a month and the cover has kept the cab looking great.
Oh no I totally agree....I cover all my cabinets. Its just the finish itself...it looks awesome (and very very similar to the new TC cabinet covering) but im be worried some drunk would knock into it or it would get damaged in transit to gigs.
12. They both sound quite different! Both di, the sansamp is more classic ampeg-ish, the tone hammer is little more modern and has a pre amp built in so it can 'active' your passive basses.
13.
It seems to me that Berg cabinets are comparable in price with other makers in the U.S but not here..? Example, the DB210 is $739 and the AE210 $799 in the UK the DB210 is £499 inc del, the AE210 is £679 plus del (after a recent price rise ) so that is quite a difference. I would think the market would benefit from some competition.
That is quite a difference!
14. I had the HS410, which was very nice and very loud for its size, but I dont know if its what I was looking for if im honest. I do tend to swap about at the moment. The horn wasnt doing it for me...but thats all IMO, some people love the horns in those cabinets. Im not sure if I prefer the 12s route with these more modern cabinets. The Aggie DBs are the business, and I only sold the two DB212 as I couldnt get use out of both of them, which was a massive shame. Im in central Newcastle with public transport! After thinking about whether to get two DB112s, ive gone for a DB212 but 4 ohm and changed colour. That cab will only get properly used when the band can pick me up for gigging. The AE410 looks great, but I can imagine after gigging it twice a month that must start to take a beating on the finish?
15.
All depends on stage volume. If you're using decent foldback monitors do you need an amp rig at all? (I say this having followed you recent amp rig exploits - I'm a git aren't I )
+ 1 hahah. Just use the sansamp and use the massive power of the PA....ive done that before in previous bands with great success.
16. We all know that Markbass make fantastic amps, but what are their cabinets like? It seems to me that surely if the amps were made in line with the cabinets, they would be a great match? They are fairly pricey, and I see hugely positive then hugely negative reviews on them. It makes things very confusing. Personally, I like the yellow. Im a traditionalist with colours, but for some reason I like the Markbass style... Im just wondering how these work out live? A lot of players tend to use Bergantino instead.
17.
Hey mate, So do you have the pedal switched 'on' all the time then? Where do you keep it in your pedal chain, after effects or before? What setting do you usually run it on?
Hi Its on all the time....with the current bands. It does work best, as noted above, with solid states IMO. I dont really have much of a pedal chain, just a few pedals I swap about. Ill more than likely try to get that sorted soon. I use a tuner, the BDDI or the Aguilar Tone Hammer...I might start having both at once to allow different types of dirt...(but not both at once). I change the settings nearly every time I use it, mainly changing the level of output from the pedal and the amount of dirt.
18. I would test what you can, as you probably know. I tried a Warwick $$ Streamer 5 but it just wasnt me at all...the neck was completely different to what Im used to. Good for some, didnt work for me. I have been told time and time again that a Stingray 5 is very flexible....and I think thats what Im going for. EB makes damn good basses, and apparently there 5 strings are made to be a 5 string, not just a bass with an added string. They are pricey-ish, but you definitely get what you pay for with them. Im thinking of getting one on order very soon now I know what pickups I want (H+S). EDIT: GK and Stingrays works very well.
19.
Where are you practicing out of interest?
Its a place in Sunderland...I dont even know if its got a name hahah. I basically get off the Metro and its nearby there. Hmmm ill find out.
20. Id be interested to hear your thoughts on the F1 with the RS210 on its own. Its almost like an opposite voicing, which can be great, eg the F1 is very quick, modern and clean, whereas the RS210 is quite sweet and almost slightly vintage in its tone.
21. Jim bought a Black Stingray (3EQ) from myself last week. The transaction was smooth, quick, and Jim communicated quickly and in a friendly manner. A top chap to deal with. Thanks Gareth
22. I have just sold my Aguilar DB212s to James...(sob...I hope you enjoy them!) With the cabs being so big and pretty, we had to make sure they got to James safely. After a few ideas, I managed to get the original packaging and the poor old courier had to come and pickup two large boxes. Everything I believe has gone their safely, and James kept me informed at all stages. Trustworthy, reliable, and friendly - deal with James with confidence Cheers Gareth
23.
Apologies for the crap quality, I took this with my Blackberry: These cabs just arrived, thanks Gareth!
Woah, you got that sorted quick! Thats an absolute chocolate beast. Hope you enjoy them. PS...I never tried stacking them with the bottom casters still on....im a bit wary sometimes.....is it working out ok?
24.
Thanks man! Link didn't work, but I found the right one >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eUrmYZlSnY Very useful and now I'm even more convinced I should be sticking with MarkBass and getting an F1... Cheers, Eude
Whoops thats what Iphones do for me..... Im suprised how much I like Markbass, seen as though I tend to like a bit of dirt in my tone, but the markbass amps sound so good without any pedals or anything, I just had to get one. The best thing Ive heard with the Markbass is a Stingray...perhaps because EB had a fair amount of input with the Markbass amps, (they are ex-Musicman amps I do believe).
25.
Hey all, I recently got a programmable 3 channel Sansamp bass DI, but I haven't really worked out the best way to use it. Firstly I'm using it as a DI output, which is my main use. But how do you guys set up your channels? Do you have one channel constantly on as your basic sound, and use the other channel as a dirtier sound? Or only switch it on for certain things? I'm finding it hard to get a good tone out of it, it seems the signal is REALLY hot so the level has to be right down most of the time, Just wondered how you guys use it and how best I can use it as part of my rig. Also, do you set your EQ on the amp flat and just use the pedal as your EQ? Usually I use a Hi-Watt valve amp into an Ampeg 4/10 cab, but at the moment I'm using an Ampeg SVT-3 pro into my Ampeg cab. Thanks!
Hi I use the standard BDDI. Its very flexible as in I can use it for that modern dirty tone into my amp, into the PA, or both. I tend to EQ the amp how I want (although with the amps I only use it with the LM3 so far which is mainly set flat). Its main advantage to me is having a pretty decent DI sound into the PA....and I can adjust it at my feet with a little extra dirt, bass, etc.
