Yep I've just noticed this... Even the cabs have gone up £60+ each. I paid a lot less with the brand new finish.
-
Oh, so I'm guessing they are very capable of a more vintage warm tone as well as their very crisp aggressive tone. I was curious...then I read some posts my tom bowlus on talkbass who said the new neo 212-ii and 112 cabinets are fantastic...
-
Just thought I'd ask for opinions on these amps n cabs. Purely because the other day I heard a Stingray through one of these setups and it was awesome. The GK1001 RB-II seems to be ridiculously loud and punchy and such a decent price!!! I was looking into their neo 212s and they seem to be getting a lot of praise. Hmm...
Are we thinking of the same Stranglers? Deep fat bass and JJ Burnel don't usually appear in the same sentence!!
Actually, I agree....isnt JJ renowned for quite a cutting bass sound (p) with grit?!
Can the F1 produce classic old-school rock tones? Stuff like the Stranglers, real deep fat bass
I imagine it can, but a more warm tone seems to point towards the Little Mark 2/3.
When you do you will be pleased, I tell you. Try a nice double H one, 5 different sounds on a blade switch, inside coils, outside coils, both humbuckers and in / out series, pukka!
I was thinking either a Ray 5 H or a Ray 5 HS....leaning towards the HS as the new Ray 5 H's do not have single coil at the bridge option anymore. I know ill like it....its just whether I take the plunge hahah.

Having a good test of the RS210 and RS212 cabinets. Seriously good tone and the prices are very reasonable. I am actually pretty much shocked ow good they sound. The RS212 can move serious air.
To the OP, if you find the right 5'er then its a perfect tool for the job of playing bass. Until you find that bass, whatever it may be, then a 5 will not 'do it' for you. I love mine, and my old bass just never gets played now.... ......poor thing
Thats the problem...I cant find a 5 string around the £1300-1400 mark I really like....but I havent tested a Ray 5 properly yet.
Where wounld the best place to get yer mits on one of these be? I am seriously, seriously tempted. I always missed the bridge mutes on the modern style rays...*GAS*
PM'd

I used to be obsessed with Stingrays a few years back. Now I feel like its coming back....which leads to more GAS. Stingray 5 or Fretless 4 might be the next bass late this year...
Congrats, Gareth Do you know if the white is solid or transparent like this beauty?
It is slightly different to the normal bright white, and its not the trans white of the stunning bass there. It is a slightly 'yellow/cream' classic white....as in slightly aged. A few shades off Olympic I do believe.
At last lol. Nice one. I think these are fantastic basses and i agree, the bule is a bit wimpy, white all the way. so when does it arrive?
They are stunners. I never thought about a 2 band EQ bas until Linus put those lovely clips up...and seen as though I have 1 3 band EQ which was my first 'expensive' bass back when I was 17/18, (and thankfully it still looks as good as it did then!) I thought id sell the other one and get a 2 band. Then I realised what the heck, I cant decide on a 5 string and ive yet to find one I want to go for, so I put all the money into this little beauty. Not as expensive as I thought.... Should arrive mid-May....but Im guessing it might be an estimate only, so could be June. I like the wait...anticpation
There's something about Ivory/white basses with tortie guards that gives me a happy. Ohh, you filthy bitch, you want it, don't you....
Yep,....this is the reason why I went for this but on the Ray....I like rosewood, but if you are having a birdseye maple neck, may as well show it off on the board as well. Beautiful.
-
I have just taken the plunge and ordered the Classic White Classic Series Stingray 4. Birdseye maple neck and and board, tort guard. One of my Rays sold, and I have to have two...so it was perfect to get a variant this time. I am VERY excited. I NEARLY went for the powder blue, but some pics Ive seen arent quite as nice as Id hoped. Not 'sonic blue' enough for me....you cannot go wrong with a classic white
Tried a Spector Euro 5?
I was going to....but the bodyshape and tone arent for me. I had a listen to a few demos and I just couldnt handle it. Unfortunately Im stuck in Fender/Ernie Ball world. I like it though....I just view all other basses based on the classic designs. Leo's trio is where its at for me.

Many thanks chaps. My aim with a 5 string was a lovely superjazz or a stingray 5. I did think about a custom 5er but realised it was daft to spend £2.5k on an instrument I wasn't 100% on. I tried a few superjazzers and I didn't like the tone. If I'm honest I haven't yet played a 5 string where the b didn't sound 'wrong' or like something a metal band would use. That's just in my search though. I need to test a Ray 5 properly. Lakland was close...but I couldn't deal with some of the bad qc I came across which I never expected.

Hi everyone Ever since my bass playing became serious again early last year, I've become much better like I used to be. I've also obtained some very nice gear. Since this period of gear buying started, I've been looking at getting a 5 string bass. When I was 13/14, I bought a tanglewood 5 string and hated it. Sold it and got a MIJ Fender Precision. I've recently tried a Warwick Streamer 5, USA Jazz 5, and a few Lakland 5s. Only the laklands worked for me in the neck dept. I have thought about a Ray 5 as well. So, after advice from JTUK and a few other chaps, I'm thinking, do I even need a 5 string?! I don't think any of the music I listen to go below drop d. All my favourite players play traditional 4 string basses. I found when I play 5 strings I barely use the lower notes. I may use the different hand positions, but that's it. Should I just stick with 4s for now and continue to build up my slap/fingerstyle instead of taking on one 5 string bass that I may end up not using?! I think I just want to tick it off, eg 'yep, 5 string covered'. Maybe a fretless 4 would be better for new skills?!

Seen one of these in the flesh! GuitarGuitar have the sunburst jazz 4. The blocks looked great, but I wasn't as impressed visually as I thought I would be. Didn't have chance to test it...

It all depends if you like single coils or not haha! If you do, hs, if you prefer humbuckers all the time, hh. I wouldn't use the neck h myself...too dark but that's just me. Some players love that.
-
yeah can see the HS pov - does that give a jazz bass type option? i'm also wondering about G&L's with the same HH configuration - there's something sweet about a pup next to the bridge that I loved with my old Gibson EBo which I sold - (has there been a thread for guitars you wish you'd never sold, must be!!) - love the stingray drive but thinking if a HH will get me a bit darker -
Definitely can se the HH being darker on the neck pup...warmer and fatter. Im going for the HS as I like my single coils....and the selector switch with a HS means you can have lots of single coil options as well as the standard H option at the bridge....the S at the neck sounds very P bass like but with that EB sheen to it.
