1. Two horns?! Woah.
2. Personally I'd keep it stock and try getting used to it. A light body is something of a rarity
3. Hmm, strange one this. Have you asked on talkbass? Seems weird. Have you tried other basses/cables/everything else?
4. Ah bugger if I was only in London! This is what I was looking for!
5. Just refreshing this thread in advance of thinking about the Big Al vs Reflex. 30th Birthday looming in 6 months and I still cant get the Big Al out of my head! Nice comparison btw, GW.
6. I checked my photos I dont think this is my ex-bass but it still looks awesome
7. Vintage P all the way. I bet 100% you would regret selling it!
8. I'll wait to see the prices. My initial enthusiasm for the Jazz has calmed a little.
9. Is this my old bass?! Mine was sold in a Hiscox case, but the hinges/clasps were all working. If it is, it left me in brand new condition, and looks like it still is.
10. This was an issue on a few RW Jazzes I tried. Ive never picked up a lighter Jazz bass, but the neck did want to go towards the ground. One thing I noticed on Talkbass. Some people have stated the bodies on the RWs are slightly thinner than normal...not much, but might help to aid a lower weight.
11.
Never tried anything except for ernie balls on my five string. I must say I have always loved the sound. What is the difference with using flats? Just curious as I am always willing to try out new stuff. Cheers Thebassman
I'd say a smoother tone, very comfortable on your fingers. Less bite, more thump!
12. Oh my, the USA models are painted in nitro.
13.
these jazz style ones look awesome!! Why isnt there a proper UK dealer for the US made G&L's?? It would be great to try some of these models out and i'd more than likely buy one!!
I know the Bass Merchant have them on their site (not the USA models) but I assume you can get a quote and order one. They do look fantastic....if they are reasonable prices im very interested as you can customise them a little with different options.
14. I grew up seeing these basses, yet I barely see any here in the UK. What do these basses sound like? Comfort/feel/quality/etc. I realise they are not Rays, so the buckers sound different. I like the look of the Jazz type basses they do, and the double bucker basses, (ASAT shape is great!). Just found one of my favourite colours as well, sonic blue Jazz http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/USA/b.../JB/enlarge.asp What can you tell me about them? Im just curious at the moment, and still considering what I can get for my 30th which is 6 months away still. Ive decided not to go custom and just get something different and more exciting. I darent try buy a vintage Fender as im too picky. Cheers
15.
I'm using a Stingray with Labella flat wounds and an Aguilar DB 750 with two GS 112 NT. It's a fairly light wieght rig that has a real punch to it!
Flats on Rays is GREAT!
16.
That's the one! I bought a PRS Custom 22 there a while back. Amazing shop, it used to be a courthouse. The guitarist in my band bought a Mesa Boogie MkIV there and a couple of MusicMan guitars.
It does actually look like the BEST music shop known to man, even though there are no basses.
17.
Just adding to this - I've heard people worry about the RH450 being under-powered. I wonder if it's the same issue?
I think this is a large part of it. That, and people think 450W isnt loud enough. TC seems to have rated it quite conservatively, more like a Trace rating. There is a ton of volume in this amp. Ive never needed it over about a 1/3 so far. The more you whack the tube tone up a little (eg 1/3 for a little hair on the notes) then crank the master, you get serious volume.
18.
Dragging this thread from the dead with an observation... I've struggled with my tone at the last couple of gigs. It's sounded flat, 'dry' and lifeless. Frankly, it's been irritating me but I haven't really had the time to look into it in any great depth... ...until tonight. At half-time, I had a mooch and realised the preset level (shift + Tubetone) had been dialled right down somehow, at some point. I rolled it back up to 3o'clock (where is used to be) and suddenly the amp came alive again! It opened up with big, fat, responsive, rich tone. Yay! It made me wonder, though.. how many people try these amps with the preset dialled down, and have passed on them because they don't sound great..? Something to bear in mind if you're thinking of trying one...
Big +1 I tested one with a few Sadowsky Metros a while back up here. This was before I tested it properly. Well, as much as the Sadowskys sounded a little fragile anyway, (I tried a normal American Fender Jazz as well, and it sounded much richer) I wasnt blown away. The preset was on pretty low, and the EQ had been well messed about with. As soon as I went elsewhere (a little test at the Bass Merchant) with a few small EQ tweaks, and a flat setting, the amp sounded incredibly huge. You can definitely tell the technology that TC state is inside (eg not just a tubetone for grit, but tube push emulation on the pre and post power section) works. The more you push the amp, is just growls right back at you, and seems to want to give more and more volume! The preset volume level is great for having different basses (eg active/passive, and a DB as well if you wanted). I normally keep the level quite high.
19.
Same as this one?
Thats the one
20. Ive just been looking at Matchless amps, purely because Im curious. The demos are incredible. If I played more guitar, id want one. I want one anyway, but they are super expensive. Eg, more than Mesa. Which brings me to my point. Even though we all spend a lot, and think our boutique/micro/all tube point to point/whichever cost a lot, those Matchless amps cost a LOT more. Fantastic gear though. I was checking out this shop as well. This must be the best high end guitar shop in the country: http://www.worldguitars.co.uk/ Just check out the demos of what they have in!
21. Hi chaps. Ill give it a good test soon and get back to you. It doesnt appear to have any kind of material that would allow it to bounce a fair bit, like the CS version. It seems quite stiff overall but im guessing once Ive worn it it will move ow I need it to be comfy. It just looks like a ridiculously massive piece of engineering, for just a strap! I kind of like that. Their gig bags are insanely good, so Im hoping this matches the quality. All parts and joins are secure with metal rivets/metal parts, and it even has a secret pick pocket should you want to use it stash picks! Im used to normal Fender straps and the normal nylon ones (Ernie Ball etc) so this is my first more expensive strap. Im hoping its spot on for live use. Its nice and wide, which is great.
22. I would definitely listen before buying. TE amps sound great. I have used their cabs much, but I know what they sound like. IMO, you need to do a good shop around and test. Dont close things off because they arent 'neo'. A good set of 2 x 112 cabinets will sound fantastic and still give you that THUMP that ceramic gives you.
23. Hahha, ill try take one. Here is the stock picture: http://www.basscentral.com/images/monostrapTN.jpg
24.
Precisions were so called because they have frets, and can be played easily with ............erm precision.
Exactly. At the time, the Precision was a massive move from Double Bass. I lke the whole vibe and tone of a Double Bass (although Ive never really tried playing) but bringing the bass into a guitar format made it much more versatile, easier to transport, and pretty damn cool. So yes, frets = more precise, therefore Precision. Stick a new set of SS strings on a Precision, whack the tone up full, and its VERY precise-sounding!
