I thought we were a bunch to spend a lot on gear...
That's the one! I bought a PRS Custom 22 there a while back. Amazing shop, it used to be a courthouse. The guitarist in my band bought a Mesa Boogie MkIV there and a couple of MusicMan guitars.
It does actually look like the BEST music shop known to man, even though there are no basses. -
Just adding to this - I've heard people worry about the RH450 being under-powered. I wonder if it's the same issue?
I think this is a large part of it. That, and people think 450W isnt loud enough. TC seems to have rated it quite conservatively, more like a Trace rating. There is a ton of volume in this amp. Ive never needed it over about a 1/3 so far. The more you whack the tube tone up a little (eg 1/3 for a little hair on the notes) then crank the master, you get serious volume.
Dragging this thread from the dead with an observation... I've struggled with my tone at the last couple of gigs. It's sounded flat, 'dry' and lifeless. Frankly, it's been irritating me but I haven't really had the time to look into it in any great depth... ...until tonight. At half-time, I had a mooch and realised the preset level (shift + Tubetone) had been dialled right down somehow, at some point. I rolled it back up to 3o'clock (where is used to be) and suddenly the amp came alive again! It opened up with big, fat, responsive, rich tone. Yay! It made me wonder, though.. how many people try these amps with the preset dialled down, and have passed on them because they don't sound great..? Something to bear in mind if you're thinking of trying one...
Big +1 I tested one with a few Sadowsky Metros a while back up here. This was before I tested it properly. Well, as much as the Sadowskys sounded a little fragile anyway, (I tried a normal American Fender Jazz as well, and it sounded much richer) I wasnt blown away. The preset was on pretty low, and the EQ had been well messed about with. As soon as I went elsewhere (a little test at the Bass Merchant) with a few small EQ tweaks, and a flat setting, the amp sounded incredibly huge. You can definitely tell the technology that TC state is inside (eg not just a tubetone for grit, but tube push emulation on the pre and post power section) works. The more you push the amp, is just growls right back at you, and seems to want to give more and more volume! The preset volume level is great for having different basses (eg active/passive, and a DB as well if you wanted). I normally keep the level quite high.

Ive just been looking at Matchless amps, purely because Im curious. The demos are incredible. If I played more guitar, id want one. I want one anyway, but they are super expensive. Eg, more than Mesa. Which brings me to my point. Even though we all spend a lot, and think our boutique/micro/all tube point to point/whichever cost a lot, those Matchless amps cost a LOT more. Fantastic gear though. I was checking out this shop as well. This must be the best high end guitar shop in the country: http://www.worldguitars.co.uk/ Just check out the demos of what they have in!

Hi chaps. Ill give it a good test soon and get back to you. It doesnt appear to have any kind of material that would allow it to bounce a fair bit, like the CS version. It seems quite stiff overall but im guessing once Ive worn it it will move ow I need it to be comfy. It just looks like a ridiculously massive piece of engineering, for just a strap! I kind of like that. Their gig bags are insanely good, so Im hoping this matches the quality. All parts and joins are secure with metal rivets/metal parts, and it even has a secret pick pocket should you want to use it stash picks! Im used to normal Fender straps and the normal nylon ones (Ernie Ball etc) so this is my first more expensive strap. Im hoping its spot on for live use. Its nice and wide, which is great.

I would definitely listen before buying. TE amps sound great. I have used their cabs much, but I know what they sound like. IMO, you need to do a good shop around and test. Dont close things off because they arent 'neo'. A good set of 2 x 112 cabinets will sound fantastic and still give you that THUMP that ceramic gives you.

Hahha, ill try take one. Here is the stock picture: http://www.basscentral.com/images/monostrapTN.jpg

Worst names for musical equipment
Musicman20 replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in Bass Guitars
Precisions were so called because they have frets, and can be played easily with ............erm precision.
Exactly. At the time, the Precision was a massive move from Double Bass. I lke the whole vibe and tone of a Double Bass (although Ive never really tried playing) but bringing the bass into a guitar format made it much more versatile, easier to transport, and pretty damn cool. So yes, frets = more precise, therefore Precision. Stick a new set of SS strings on a Precision, whack the tone up full, and its VERY precise-sounding! -
It seems the UK have just got another shipment of the short Mono GS1 straps. I've been waiting since around March for this. I know Mono make great kit already, but for a strap, this thing is unreal! Very VERY well made, and nicely padded. Im looking forward to using it. Check em out! Only £29.95 from Strings Direct...

Pup slightly out of alignment. Should i be worried?
Pics tonight. ill take a couple as it came but hoping my black PG will fit so ill get some of those as well. I might even put a tort on it if ti fits. I had one of these on my old black HW-one P and it looked pretty good. I do think this bass looks more robust than the MIA. The lack of gloss might help but ti looks very road worthy. Jazz basses eh? who'd have thought i would go back to these after the past few years of not liking them. Then again, im already thinking of a P body for this neck, but thats next year sometime. Oh, and another coincidence. I was also using my Behringer BDI21 last NYE. After not using ti for a while and getting a Sadowsky DI recently im now getting rid of that and going back to the BD21 (hopefully a BDDI). so, in effect i had my ideal tone last NYE and its taken me money and 7 months to realise that.
Ive tried new things and gone back to what I know! Seems to happen quite a lot on here. Thank god youve not lost a lot of money realising it. -
I keep hearing how good the GB 212T is....I need to hear one to decide.

Will boutique basses be good long-term investments?
Musicman20 replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
No. I love Sadowskys, F-Basses, MTD's and such but realistically a lot of them trend as flavour of the week a lot of the time and I can't see them being a wise investment. A Fender is a good investment due to it's timeless design and the likelihood that a good Fender from the early 50's to the very late 70's will never stop going up in price. Most boutique basses depreciate massively in value very quickly, just like a new Aston Martin or the newer Ferrari's.
Big plus 1. I'd love a boutique bass, but I can't see them having that charm of an old Fender. I agree in addition that boutique basses tend to be all about flavour of the month. I do like Sadowsky, but I won't buy one as they just don't look that special to my eyes. Plus, I thought their customer service was a little rough round the edges. The Metros are pretty much mass produced now. -
I can't believe this still hasn't gone! If you watch the youtube videos of someone comparing a P bass copy to a Fender one you always know which is which. Fender Precision tone is incredibly distinctive, simple bass or I dont think you can imitate it 100%. I've never tried a high end version though, not a lot to improve now fender have upped the quality since 2008.
Cheers dude!
have pm'd with interest... (I want it, but...)
Replied
Im starting to make inroads into my 40s now and the old Trace stuff is doing me in. I am looking for a lightweight amp and a 4x10 cab. I play in a function band playing usual functiony type stuff (bit of everything) and a blues rock band which requires more dynamic/loud playing. Suggestions and recommendations would be welcomed. I will be buying from Darren at Bass Merchant as he is top bod and only 20 mins up the road from me. Budget approx £1200k Thankyou.
Agreed, Darren is a top chap! Markbass Little Mark 3? 4x10 wise...hmmm. Even the neo 4x10s are stilly fairly heavy. Have you though about two manageable 1x12s? They pack a wallop, if you get something high end like Aguilar GS or DB.

Spent too much, but nowhere near as much as my friends who are car fanatics.
-
Fender make the best original style Jazz basses for the price. If you want something more modern and a little different, Id try Sandberg. Never got on with the Lakland QC issue....gave up trying to buy one. They can be VERY heavy.
-
I think some people associate a decent amount of bass with 'boom', eg those who like squeaky clean tight bass guitar tones. The BT is one hugely powerful and awesome amp. I dont own one but I tested it. Fantastic amp, and great dirt if you want it.
-
That HB combo looks alright, but the amp itself looks super super cheap/tacky. But you get what you pay for. I bet its great as a backup.

RS210 - nice treble extension, tight bass, very good price, and good resale value.

Worst names for musical equipment
Musicman20 replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in Bass Guitars
Cheesiest and shittest name for a bass cabinet: Genz Benz 'Uber' bass cabs. Probably sound great, and they look great! Genz do seem to be stuck in a rut with their actual aesthetics. I reckon if they got a designer in, to do it more slick, they could sell a lot more. Basically, make the new Shuttle look like an Apple product (eg slick and/or white). -
Nice setup! Im looking forward to seeing these in the flesh and trying one out.
