1.
I find the B width neck (1.625 inches), half way betwwe P and J widths, to be the most comfortable. My 72P has a B width neck and is so easy to play that any idiot could do it (which is fortunate for me). The Alleva WW had a traditional 1.75 width neck and I didn't find it as comfortable as my 72P (although it wasa clearly better made!) You can buy matched PJ pickup sets from Wizard, DiMarzio etc so why not try that on one of your Ps, Gareth? Will cost including installation between £100-200 but that's a lot cheaper than the cost of a Jazz bass.
Down to one now! As I promised myself.
  2.
Hmmmm. That wasn't my experience, but I guess it depends on your particular 4x10! Are you talking about your Orange or your old Berg Gareth? Both are, incidentally, a lot more expensive than a Compact!
Orange. The Berg would have eaten it alive for sheer volume....it is still more than likely the loudest most compact 4x10 Ive ever used. But I only compared it to the Orange. I actually also used it at a gig where we had an Ampeg 410E on standby (8 ohms) and yes, the amp we were all using (SVT Pro 3) can seem to have a lack of volume, it was much more evident with the Compact. Lows? Yes. Sweet highs and normal mids? Not in my experience. The 410 was just punch central and provided a much fuller sound. The horn was off. Its definitely light, and its pretty loud, but Id much rather use a 2x12 or 4x10. I actually preferred my Orange OBC 115 as well. This is just my experience.
  3.
I'm currently looking for any second hand music man bongo hs or HH models for sale. Are there any on basschat? Cheers!
There was a 6 a while back....very rare but fabulous looking!
  4. Ay, I bought a Lakland DJ5 from them and it was in a terrible condition, and the wrong gig bag. Nice guys, but the stock always seems knocked about, (obviously not all of it).
  5.
..or pretty any J bass with the Sadowsky electronics in it. Don't get bogged down in the mythical Sadowsky snake oil thing. There is no real secret ingredients in getting the Sadowsky tone - it's pretty much down to the pickups/circuit... it certainly doesn't come from the woods or construction (afterall, it's the same as pretty much every bolt on jazz type bass) What I will say is that Sadowsky have achieved the reputation they have through the quality of their constuction and the like... and also through Fender not being able to get their shop in order and get a run of nicely finished basses out there. Nice one for breaking through and giving Fender a run for their money I'd say. Give Mr Sadowsky a selection of seemingly identical wood to build basses from and whilst they may look identical, due to wood being organic, there will be a slight deviation in the sound - especially when run passively. You can never tell what a bass sounds like exactly until it's been built. The second you put a circuit in, the importance of the wood is not as great and the pickups/circuit has a greater influence on the tone than anything else.
I definitely agree with most of this. I do commend Sadowsky for its excellent quality, and for giving Fender good competition. They got lazy (and still are sometimes) and needed a kick.
  6.
Good call - but depends on budget again as there are few BFB cabs available second hand and they ain't the cheapest option when bought new!
I agree. Id go for a semi decent 4x10. At low-medium budget, weight cant really be a factor. Ive tried the Compact and light it may be, but it couldnt keep up my 4x10....
  7. My guitarist uses a PRS (not sure of the model) and it sounds fantastic. Its a crazy silver sparkly thing, and the tones are stunning. We play really fast and quite technical modern punk, and all the little extra runs and techy chord changes he puts in come through excellently.
  8.
In your shoes, and with a hankering for something different but from one of the big three, I'd be looking at one of the newer EBMMs.
Ah...well, that is also being addressed. 2 basses are leaving me today....and a few new ones are being ordered. One of them being distinctively Big Al shaped Its my 30th next March so they should be here just in time.
  9. Standard P or MM (has to be Fender or Musicman) for THAT classic tone. They win in the band I play in at the moment. Then JJ. Not sure about mixing them up, apart from the the dual Musicman pickups.
  10. It might be just me being picky. Im sure I can get used to it if I used a Jazz bass and nothing else for a few weeks. At the moment im switching between 4s, 5s, and all different neck profiles.
  11.
I am amazed this still here. Cracking bass for the money. I think you should get a box from your nearest guitar shop and offer postage, would be gone in a flash in my view.
+1
  12. I noticed again whilst packing my basses last night that a P bass neck is much more comfy for me. I put this down to years and years of using P bass style basses right from the first time I picked up a bass. I even started to feel the nut on the Jazz was too small...as in it cramped my hands. I have smallish hands...so this is odd. I want to still have a J bass, but now Im thinking maybe its not meant to be. Hmmm The problem is, I love the back pickup on a Jazz, and that growl you get with both on full. Hmmmm, again.
  13. If its a tight budget, Hartke LH500. Cab wise....maybe a Peavey or Hartke?
  14. Thanks for all the responses. At the moment its 50:50 between a EBMM Sterling 5 HS and a EBMM Bongo HH.
  15. I cannot stand the guy called, I think, universalnote. He 'showcases a bass', by basically going into a shop and play the worst 'bass demo' nonsense Ive ever heard. Just random notes, awful technique, and doesnt even know what hes playing most the time. He has quite a list of demos, and they are all a waste of time.
  16.
That really is a poor show. However, I've known people to ring Sounds Live and ask for boxes and get a negative reply. Said caller, suspicious that the sales assistant didn't actually check the stock room crosses the road and goes to shop and gets a box! If you're going to cycle shops check Steel's Cycles in Gosforth or Edinburgh Cycles at the top of Shields Road, Byker, they're usually good for boxes!
Cheers. I agree. Soundslive didnt even go and look when I rang, they just said 'sorry no'. Ive been in before and got one though. Ive managed to make two massive mega boxes from 4 or 5 small thick boxes, and put extra padding on the corners etc. The basses are in hardcases and also the hardcase is covered in bubble wrap....then about 2 layers of thick card or more. I go a bit over the top! GuitarGuitar are never that helpful I find. The bigger they get the worse they become unfortunately....last year they seemed much more open and happy!
  17. Ill give this some thought and get back to you
  18.
I think my next weekend off is the first weekend in Nov, when I will be lying in bed eating chips
Best post ever!
  19.
If you say so. Ironically, now I think you don't know what patronising is.
Haha, but you are still slightly insulting his intelligence now. Please dont get the nearest copy of the dictionary out! It does seem that you dont even realise you are doing it. Nay mind! Group hug?!
  20.
If you post a lot of basses & guitars, supermarket fruit boxes are the business: Your local Lidl will be delighted to let you take away as many of these as you can carry (they have to dispose of hundreds every day), and four of these & a hot-melt glue gun will build you a bomb-proof bass box. These are extremely rigid, with reinforced corners - they're designed to be stacked while filled with fruit & veg so they have to be sturdy. You have to unstick a couple of ends to make them overlap, bubble-wrap the bass, pack the box out with newspaper/whatever to stop it moving about inside and glue the top on by undoing ends to make it overlap. Cover any holes (these often have perforations/carrying handles) with sticky tape. They're adaptable too - use fewer boxes for guitars or instruments posted with the neck off. They come in half-sizes too which are useful for different sized instruments. I'll do a photo tutorial next time I pack a bass! Jon.
Hi Jon Thanks....Ive used some of these before and their is a market right near me that uses these boxes. Ill go and ask them on the way home. Both basses are hardcased so its going to take a fair bit of work, but worth it. Cheers
  21. Cheers, good idea!
  22. Im packing two basses tonight. Ive got more than enough for one bass, and the padding/proper tape. I go overboard so it should be safe. Can anyone suggest anywhere I could go to get a few cheeky boxes? They dont have to be guitar or bass shapes as I normally cut them to shape, then cover them in tape and padding. Eg a TV box or anything like that....Id need a few obviously. Ideas? Im going to ring Soundslive in a bit. GuitarGuitar said they charge £5 for a used tatty box. No thanks. I might drop by Tesco / etc.

    SOLD

Oh heck...nice....hmm! I need a cheaper bass for rough gigs. Ill have a think. Any issues?
  24. Totally over the top perhaps, but the RH450 + a nice 112? Even their RS112? Ulitmate flexibility, warmth, and 'tube' like sound, but light and quiet.
