    It's not easy. I felt OK about my 3rd attempt but when I bought the MIJ Paisley, it looked crap 🤣 Refinished it soon afterwards 👍

    Go DIY. Jazz bass of choice. 2 x skins from Axedecals (£40 the pair). https://axedecals.com/shop/guitar-skins/retro/retro-paisley-guitar-wrap-skin/ Clear plate from Brian (maybe another £20). Spray the edges ( say £8 for a can)

    It's soft, no doubt about that 🙂 Much the same as working with Paulownia, factor the softness into your finishing plans and it stops being an issue. Plan for that is a piezo only P-bass. My main concern is the weight, may need to go headless to avoid serious neck dive.

    Aye, going by photos isn't much cop. Alasdair is quite picky on how he grades things but nothing beats choosing your own pieces.

    Neck pocket cut, marking for pickup and bridge. On to my DIY spray booth. After much scraping, gnashing of teeth, sliced fingertips and general nonsense ; a working bass guitar appeared 🙂

    Other stuff. Had an idea I wanted a reverse Telecaster neck. Bought one from Wan Guitar on Ali Express. £69 and 3 week delivery. Worth every penny 🙂 Lovely chunky neck. Had a 2 saddle bridge in the spares box. @The_Rodster came to my rescue with these T-bird pickups 😎 Had the option of 1 or 2. Decided on 1 👍

    A fair bit has happened since start of last month. Forgot to take photos for most of it 😬 A fair few mishaps too 🤬 Major mishap was slipping while cutting round the horns. Had a bright idea. Binding will hide that Fact I'd never tried binding before nor had the right tools never entered my head. What could go wrong ? Actually a fair bit can go wrong 🤣 Combination of wrong bearings,too big guides and a craft knife left me with this. Forgot to photo the gluing part 😖 One thing. I wanted to do the binding before cutting the neck pocket, thought I'd get a sharper finish.

    @Angel Whatever you decide on ; get decent cutters. You want things to cut smoothly, that's not going to happen if the blade gets blunt halfway round. Oh, and keep a swear box handy . If you're like me you'll be in profit by the time the build's over 😀

    @Cuzzie Asking for basswood might get you funny looks. Closest we have is lime which is heavier and harder 🙂 Pine is great but depends on the variety. Fella up the road from me, Bonnywood Guitars, just uses white pine from the builder's merchants. I got a bit of Longleaf for the slab P-bass. Weighs a ton and bloody hard 🙂

    Grab some tulipwood (poplar). Similar properties as alder when it comes to weight/density/hardness etc. Damn sight cheaper.

    Not a slab body nor particularly heavy. Owned 6 of them, none over 9.5 lb. Sorry @oldslapper never saw your post 👍

    Like an eejit I sold it ☹️ Somebody in Edinburgh was after a decent bass for one of his students an this fool thought "the RPBX would be a great bass for anyone" so offered it up. Regretted it then and regret it now . Wide shallow D neck, well balanced, great fit/finish. Grab one but ask the seller about the nut width. Few year back there was a QC mix up and a batch shipped out with 38mm jazz type necks instead of the 42mm P-bass.

    Most folk build their own but a couple spring to mind. Mike Donner's Crackercaster. http://www.guitarrepairoftampabay.com/crackercaster-4.asp Bach Music. http://www.bachmusik.com/en/music-instruments/bass-guitars/model-bach-bpb-60 Retrovibe announced the Django earlier this year. Those were medium scale and I'm not sure how many Dave built.
