You may be confusing the DynaBass ,which Tim Landers helped design, with his TL-5. The DynaBass and the 1st generation TL-5 share the same electronics and bridge. However where the DynaBass had both Schaller tuners and Schaller 3D bridges the 1st gen TL-5 only got the Schaller bridge. Neither 1st or 2nd generation TL-5s had 'open gear' tuners, always mini tuners like Gotoh GB-7 & GB-707. They may have used actual Gotoh though it's not guaranteed, Peavey used Korean Gotoh copies for their premier model the US Cirrus. For the 2nd generation TL-5, Peavey moved from the Schaller 3D to an unbranded bridge. I'm almost certain these were sourced from ABM in Germany. The black bridge on that green bass is an ABM bridge or a copy of one. Peavey used those bridges on the Cirrus and some later year 2nd gen TL-5s shipped with them. Reason for the change was more practical than economic. 1st generation TL-5s had Peavey's Super Ferrite pickups. Designed for 4 string basses, they were not quite wide enough for a 5 string bass 😞 The Schaller bridge allowed players to tighten up string spacing for a more even signal. The 2nd gen came with an actual 5 string pickup which rendered adjustable string spacing obsolete 👍 There's a good chance that green bass has a stock bridge and tuners. The 'rugby ball' jack socket plate is an addition, the original bass had a Switchcraft barrel socket. Like all barrel jack sockets it will have failed and I imagine some damage occurred while replacing it; hence the cover plate. Knobs are 1/4" (6.35mm) solid shaft for the Vol and Balance, 1/4" with 1/8" top shaft for the tone pots. If any pots fail I would look at replacing the entire EQ rather than attempting to solder new pot to the PCB. Looing at your photos I think somebody has already tampered with the EQ section. You should have 2 dual pots, Hi/Low and Mid shift/Mid +/- . Could you provide a photo of the control cavity ? OP's bass is from early/mid 90's😀 Obligatory photo of my TL basses 🙂

Does the current bridge not allow you to set the string heights or intonation ? Do the current tuning pegs slip, even after basic maintenance of a daub of grease and a wee tighten ? Does the bass neck dive in all positions or can you find the balance point by adjusting the strap ? £130 for a bit more output but lose the mids which give the P-bass it distinct sound. Not an ideal situation. Could try an Entwistle Neo, PBXN, at £40. Massive boost in output while retaining the P-bass mids. Screenshot of the SPB-3 signal vs the Entwistle PBXN. Started out on a P-bass, with tapes 🙂 80's came along. Embraced active EQ, silly shapes, heady pegheads, neck through, garish colours etc; even dabbled with 5 strings. Tried the P-bass again early 2010's, this time single coil 51 style. That's me set for life 😎

In 1986 Peavey changed their Fury bass from a single coil P-bass (angled) to a split coil version, while they were at it they also changed the neck from a proper P-bass to a 38mm nut jazz bass neck. You can see the changes from mine below. Left is the 1986 , Centre the 1984, Right the final version.

When I did my 51 slab Jazz Bass I had Martin Harmer (Charm Pickups) knock me up the pickups. Needed a wider pole spacing at the bridge and wound RWRP for hum-cancelling when using both single coils. Martin cuts his own flatwork so he'd have no problem doing a bridge position 4 pole jazz single. I was £120 for the pair so he's not too expensive. Will PM you his details if you want 👍

They just sort of appeared in my vicinity. After the first few I made some good friends within the company and more started popping up wherever I was 😁 Next thing I knew I'd at least one of every model from 1978 to 2010. Wish Peavey had made stamps, be a damn sight easier to store 🤣

OK, here is some of the Peaveys.

For such a huge event I don't remember too much. I remember my pal telling we were going as The Who were playing. Mind being broke and selling some golf clubs my old man had in the shed for the ticket. Don't recall the trip down from Falkirk or how it took to get inside Wembley , I do remember we'd been inside 20 minutes and telling my pal to wait "Right here" as I joined a queue to buy smokes; never saw him again until the following week 🤣 I mind it was bloody hot and London prices shocked me, everything was £1.50 ; Can of beer back home was 20p. At some point I ventured off the pitch and found a bar selling draught, again £1.50. It was there I saw the full horror of Bono's ego and Queen steal the show. Never was a fan of the band but the way they controlled the crowd was a wonder to behold 😎 Queues leaving the stadium were a nightmare, queue into tube station was the same. Those queues meant I missed my train but luckily the Glasgow train was an hour late so got that instead. Train was mobbed, parked my arse on the floor in-between carriages for 8 hours; tapping smokes of boy scouts heading to the lavvy for a sly puff 😀

Down a third from a few years back. Bottle crashed as I neared @cetera heights, there can be only 'One' and I couldn't handle the pressure 😀

51 Fenders had pretty wide nuts, they tended more towards 44mm - 45mm instead of the 42mm we find today. Congrats on a successful mod project 👍

Could be that, being a Japanese company, they use Japanese Industry Standard screws ? At first glance a Jis screw looks just like a Philips. If it has a small dimple on the head or an 'X' then it's Jis. Be aware not all Jis screws have the marking so err on the side of caution and use a Jis screwdriver for product made or designed in Japan 👍

There are a few versions of the Zodiac. The Zodiac EXP was the entry model. It has a 20 fret neck unlike the other models which have 21 frets and just the split coil pickup. Mine was the red one in the centre. It's a decent P-bass, not too heavy and has a slim jazz bass style neck. The next version of Zodiac was the BXP model. Those have the same slim neck but with 21 frets and a jazz single coil added to the bridge position. Very nice basses. The alder body keeps the weight down. Choice of pickups allow for use across many styles, it shines in a classic rock setting. Finally there was the Zodiac De Scorpio, signature model for the Megadeath player. Mine are pictured either side of the red EXP. One can be forgiven if thinking that Megadeath connection meant a bass designed for 'Thrash' but that is not the case here. Ellefson did not want a carbon copy of his own bass, instead he wanted his name on a bass anyone could use and something he would have wanted himself when starting out. He chose a standard BXP Zodiac and asked for a mirror PG as a nod to Phil Lynott, the addition of Seymour Duncan pickups was a Peavey marketing decision, something Ellefson thought unnecessary. I'm of the opinion the EXP is good to get started playing but the BXP will not only get you started but stand you in good stead for many years to come. I'm an unabashed fan of the Zodiac BXP 😎

It's a Tune, just look at the logo on the peghead. Lad from Casiopea has been playing them for years, so long there's even a model named after the band he plays in. I've a vague memory he's actually a dentist in real life 😃
