Well its been a turbulent last couple of weeks, my radiator died on my Mazda Bongo, clutch went on the Volvo and everything else seemed to swallow my last pennies of late (Violin section please ). So i had to part with a bass to make financial amends -never a happy decision. After much agonising i ended up selling my 88 Stingray, but thankfully to the previous owner who is uber happy about this and tomorrow it is to be on its way to a beautiful reunion. This did make parting with such a beautiful bass easier, i must admit. Anyway after the car repairs i was left to get myself a cheaper bass. Well tonight, just in fact, i scored a Jonas Hellborg Sounds of Sweden bass on the bay. My friend had a black one of these basses years ago and i was always blown away by it but he said they are very rare so i expected never to see one again, let alone win one on ebay - can't wait to get it. Second score was here on the For Sale forum earlier, a Hohner Professional Fretless. I'm at my total budget but really happy of the outcomes after parting with the ray. I just hope my two new babies both live upto my expectations but for now i'm one happy bunny with expectation Every cloud has a silver lining
Hi Lee.Just an update on the jazz ,I have fitted a Badass and changed the control plate to a stackpot, V/T for each pickup,it make it a truly awesome bass.Best Wishes Rich
Hi Rich, Glad the Jazz is going well, it was a cracker when i got it at Mansons-it surely outplayed quite a few US models that day and that was at stock. The new Mexican basses have really improved with their quality and with your mods it must be a super jazz. My bitsa jazz is my favourite too, having Lindy Fralins and a BadassII but what i really love is my all part maple neck with mother of pearl blocks....it is a 70's chunky jazz neck that is super smooth. Despite trying 'many' other basses i keep coming back to this one.....but now i have room for another...decisions decisions -

SOLD Bought this funk machine a few months back off Macko 1968, and well what a beauty-he was sad to sell too. Immaculate for its age, probably the lowest action of any bass i've ever played, and looks a stunner. 1988 Stingray, funky as f$(£...need i say more. Oh the neck is gorgeous, slighty faded with age so is almost like somewhere between a dark maple and a roasewood coloured..it is of course rosewood. Has mutes, some Pre EB features too being 1988.......sure to be a collectors item. Original post here Hope Macko doesn't mind me using his pics: Looking to get back £850 firm which is what i paid, and i have to say it was a bargain + P&P (courier) or collection from Plymouth - Comes with hard case too. Or trade a bass + at least £400 cash (Bank transfer) for it. Ideally looking for Fender P bass (mapleboard), J bass, Warwick, might consider MM Sub/Sterling becuase i know i'll miss this but w.h.y. I will eventually put this on the bay' but at £900+ to recover those ridiculous sellers costs.

I'm building a P at the mo. Got some US pick ups last week on the bay for £25 and got a brand new vintage maple All parts neck off a guy privately for £104 with 60's decal (awaiting arrival) - he has more for sale!!!. I'm using my sonic blue Sue Ryder P body & bridge with P bridge ash tray. Also using a tort pickguard i picked up here for a £10. My aim is to make some thing like this 60's P: I'd like to relic next

I love flats and plan to put some on my Stingray soon, prob Chromes as thats all i can afford but i'd love to try some of these up market flats i.e. Labella's TI's etc. However i prefer my jazzbass for playing reggae live, but its also my goto bass for the odd funk/rock jam where i prefer the zings of rounds. My comprimise is dirty unchanged rounds that i give a quick wipe if funkin' it up . My thoughts to the OP is that shops should allow the option to at least try flats when trying out a new axe .

Absolutely in love with Banyan at the mo, not my usual reggae ting but more of a Fusion 4 piece Bitches Brew/live evil groove meets the Janes addictions drummer - wicked stuff!!! Check em' on the tube.

Depends on acoustics of the venue for me but generally i start off with: Genre: Reggae & Ska Amp: Orange Terror bass + Ampeg SVT 4x10HLF & Peavey Cab 2x10cab (Connected via serial cable) EQ - Bass +1 (2-3 for dub) , Middle -1 (+1 for dub) , Treble -1 Vol about 5 and Gain about 1 Bass - mostly Fender Jazz, neck pick up mainly (bridge sometimes for more defined ska stuff) and Tone about half way rolled off. I play close to the neck for a warmer tone too. Irie

I play for herb & beer ....getting paid is a bonus...it does happen to me though.

OBT's....Great amps! I use my mine mainly for reggae/dub stuff and love the tone. I have the gain fairly low, with volume up to about 5, and still get a great defined warm sound. I find the Orange eq subtle enough to get good defintion in my lows...in other words cleaning up the 'mud' - i rarely concentrate on high frequency . Recently i had a freestyle jam, mainly funky fusion weird time stuff, and switched between my Stingray & Jazz. I found the Ray to be a lot warmer but not as defined as the jazz. Both gave a great old school funk sound which i liked but i found i had to fiddle with the stingray eq a lot more to get good note definition

I use an Orange Terror into a SVT410HLF, love it - very old school sounding. I replaced my SVT Pro4 with the Orange terror as i found they sounded very simlar to my ears but with more obvious eq options with the Pro 4.

Playing mainly reggae covers it has to be...... Red red wine UB40, Bring me your cup UB40 (and lots more UB40 stuff) oh and i momentarily nodded off once whilst playing Aswads 'Good thing going' at a gig......bores me to sleep that track.

Jeez really shocked at all the Barcelona horror stories.....seems a different place as mentioned here to what i went to in 98 . Although tbh our band looked dodgy as f%$£ out there....perhaps that why we never got mugged or had any hassles.
-
Cheers guys, i'll try pushing the poles pieces through and see if that yields any results. I've tried the eq earlier and no joy on that, perhaps i should try a compressor? It's strange because i want to play my MM more but keep coming back to my Jazz as it never lets me down. Flats could be a good option on the MM. Sildxx, i'm using Lindy fralin pick ups in my Jazz which seem to be well balanced with the tone roled off. I also have Lindy's in my 5 string too...really rate them. Does the J-East J retro allow for a passive option also or is it all active?

Selling my PA as it doesn't get used. The speakers look like EV300 speakers, same casing etc but with what i think are Eminence speakers-the guy i bought them off said they were but i've never had a need to check; they have EV B grade written on the back but i cannot vouch that they are genuine EV speakers - both have tweeters. It sounded great quality when i used it at a local gig a year or so ago - complete with tripod poles which have bags. Thankfully our drummer has a huge PA so i've never had a need for this PA. Also have a Studiomaster VPX15 600W active bass sub, has built in crossover which is useful for the aforementioned speakers. A great powerful combination together. See here All items are heavy so collection form Plymouth only. Looking for £250 o.v.n.o for both - is this reasonable? , may split if required. Can throw in speakon cables and a small amp for extra £50. May consdier part trade on a P neck, preferable maple and/or Zoom H1 or H2 field recorder plus cash my way. Happy to email pictures, just PM me.

Hello, Hope someone can share their pearls of wisdom. I scored an 88 MM Stingray on here a few months back and i have to say i love it to bits, plays like a dream and easily my favourite bass........however: The bass itself seems to have a lot more treble than i'm used to. It's great i guess if your a funkateer and want to do the Louis Johnson thing, however i'm not that talented to do Louis. I guess i'm a dub man who likes a warm phat sound so i have the treble pretty much all the way off. When playing like this the G & sometimes the D gets lost, the E & A strings notes dominate the sound. I've tried raising the pick up towards the G and dropping at the E end. I've also fiddled with my amp eq to see if i can balance the strings more....no luck. I have owned three MM's rays in the past and don't remember having this issue - is it an 80's thang?. Any suggestions? I'm considering maybe i need to change the pre-amp (one day as skint) to a John East - i used to have one on a Pre EB ray and had no issues. Or should i consider the pick up, maybe a Norstrand or any other suggestions? Are there any modifications i can do to the MM pre amp? One thing i have not considered until now is turning the bass EQ down on the bass and then up on the amp, maybe that may work ??? Any thoughts ?
