1. I get back from holiday late on the Friday night but have already bought my weekend ticket. I will be tired and jet lagged but don't want to miss this!
2. Yes: Jazz, PBass, Stingray and Roscoe.
3.
I haven't quite got round to having lessons yet, but I do recall having Jen Clark's name on the top of my list when I was looking at bass tuition in the Glasgow area. Aside from the endorsements from fellow musicians her website presents her work in a very professional manner, and I believe that first impressions count. Just out of interest - what should one expect to pay per lesson from a very good tutor and how long would the lessons be?
I pay my current tutor £ 20 per 45 minutes but the best guy I had, who was not only a full time pro but truly inspirational as a tutor was £ 40 per hour. Sadly our timings did not work out. Typically I would expect around £ 20-£30 per hour
4. Do a search at Musicteachers.co.uk. I just found at least 25 bass guitar teachers within 15 miles of Glasgow Central Station. They may not be members here, but you can try several until you find one you like. That site can also be used for Edingburgh and vocals too (at least 20 in Glasgow again)
5. A PJB BIghead amp plus the PJB headphones and some new strings for my Roscoe.
6. Having just listened to Bobby Hacket and Jack Teagarden's Coast Concert album, it has to be trad. Sublime
7. I have not tried a Wal, but they do get some great reviews. One caution, however, I was desperate for either a Dingwall Vor a Spector V having heard several played by others over the last few months. I went to Bass Direct and tried both, exactly the models I wanted. I also tried Ken Smiths and others but came away with a Roscoe. I had never heard of Roscoe prior to then. Why did I buy it? To me it was the easiest to play and for my ability, it gave me the best tone. I nearly bought a Dingwall off here, prior to that but am pleased I did not. In other words get yourself to somewhere like Bass Direct / Bass Gallery and try all sorts of high end guitars. It will either convince you to wait for the Wal you want or perhaps you may discover a preferred alternative. Good luck. Apologies if this comes across as a lecture, it is not meant to be, just a tip based on my very recent experience.
8. Guitarists annoy me, I have fat fingers and having started to learn violin, trumpet and drums in my formative years, there were not too many alternatives that appealed to me. Also there does not appear to be much call in the blues / jazz world for the Cor Anglais or Oboe.
9.
That only works if you play exclusively in Dorian mode.
Now that I love. Brilliant.
10. When I told someone in the office that I was learning bass, he was really surprised I would take that instrument up on the basis that there are no bass players who lead a band! I guess that whilst the guy listens to music, he has no idea re the visual difference between an electric bass and a guitar.
11. I just bought a Roscoe from them. The younger guy was superb and patient in getting out the basses I wanted to try, no pressure at all. I did find the older guy (Mark?) a little less friendly and perhaps felt a little pushed out of the door once the deal was done. There were no other customers in the shop, although the phone rang. I think he is a typical businessman so no real damage. I will go back due to the range of top kit they have. By not going I am only limiting what is available to me.
12. And here is mine. Poor mobile phone shot. Century Signature V with Aguilera DCB and OBP-3. Born in 2014 for the NAMM Winter show and has been with Bass Direct since then until I bought it on Saturday. I cannot believe it has hung around for so long.
13. Many thanks all. Somewhat frustrated at being on the train home and not playing it!
14. If a small boy arrived on my doorstep, I would be concerned! Congrats on the bass. V cool.
15. Thank you. One photo taken at home with my phone:
16. Is a pedalboard worth it? For me it is as it allows me to store all those pedals I have bought but do not use in one handy place!
17. I just found this and this entirely sums up my experience. I went in hoping to fall in love with the Spector NS5 XL or the Dingwall Z1 5 but, whilst they are great guitars, the Roscoe is the one that blew me away:
well i nipped down to Bass Direct this morning with the intention of buying a lovely Spector Euro LX5 in a lovely plumb gloss colour. the Spector was very nice & i was going to buy it until i was passed a rather nice Roscoe Century 5 oh bugger it was love at first play,it is an amazing bass,i have never played a bass anything like this before, suddenly the Spector wasn't as nice as it first seemed. the Roscoe is beautifully made, plays like a dream & the sound,OMG the sound it blew my mind, absolute perfection i bloody well love it. i had no intention of even looking at the Roscoe basses but hey i now own one,it cost me slightly more money than i planned to spend but frankly i don't care,it was well worth every penny so own such a beautiful instrument. top class service at Bass Direct, well worth the 300 mile round trip (yes i am knackered after setting off at 5:25 am) i can't stop playing it & don't really need to sleep,do i ?
18. Many thanks guys. Can't stop playing it at the moment.
19. As a result of a trip to Bass Direct this morning, I am now the very proud, if not somewhat poorer, owner of a Roscoe Century Signature 5 bass! Exhibition Quilt Maple body (aqua finish) Maple neck (35") with a Purpleheart centre lamination and Wenge stringers. The fingerboard is Spalted Purpleheart w/Sapwood. Aguilar OBP-3 pre amp with Aguilar DCB humbuckers. Irrespective of all that, the sound and playability are just awesome and more. I tried several other of BD's high end kit but came back to this every time. The B is piano like in quality and well just wow!. Pics to follow, meanwhile I hope the shop won't mind me using a couple of theirs:
20. Years ago I fell out with an IT geek who was a mod on a biking forum. Through some trickery he caused my avatar to be seen as a vagina to all but me. I still saw my original avatar. It was only discovered by me when the site owner contacted me to complain my avatar was inappropriate! Needless to say he was made to change it back but was still allowed to continue as a mod.
21. My offer still stands to drive this up still stands. I am only an hour from you and an hour from Buckie.
22. I am driving up to nr Grantown on Spey on 21st November if that helps? It will need to be picked up from there between Monday to Wednesday during daytime if that helps? Those dates are fixed and it is unlikely I will be up again for some time. Me being lazy, you would also have to get it to me nr Buckingham before then. Preferably boxed as it will have to fit in with all the stuff, incl dog, I am taking up. I will not be able to bring it back down, however, should the recipient not want it.
