  1. From learning to play at 14/15 on I never played with a pick at all. It never felt comfortable to me, to the point that even playing guitar I still don’t. That said, my current band is a bass/drums two piece and playing fingerstyle just doesn’t work for what we do. I tried but it needs the attack of pick playing. As a result I’m using a pick for the first time ever. And playing shortscale basses for the first time too.
  2. It’s possible. Saw so many gigs around that time, if it wasn’t with LC would’ve maybe been supporting Fishbone. Anyway, I derailed the thread somewhat...🤣
  3. Think it was The Naked Truth that supported. Not 100% though as I seemed to be at a gig at least once a week back then. Those were the days (except the broken ankle bit).
  4. I own two MIM PJ Mustangs and agree that there are a decent range of sounds there. I don’t use a range of tones myself (volume and tone on full and the P pickup soloed as that’s what I go for), but there’s a lot more they’re capable of for sure. I’ve seen quite a number of people say they had wiring issues as mentioned above, and I did on both of mine too. Quick fix in both cases, but annoying for something that’s not exactly a budget bass. Don’t get me wrong though, I love them to bits...
  5. Only a couple spring to mind... Anthrax at Wolves Wulfun Hall on their first tour back with Belladonna singing. I lasted an hour but the vocals were killing me. A shame as I’ve always loved the ‘Thrax. It was only a couple of years on from them playing the same venue in what turned out to be their last tour with John Bush and it was one of the best gigs I’ve been to. He was such a better fit for the band and material. Also, My Morning Jacket at Birmingham Institute. Yawnfest. At the opposite end of the spectrum there was one gig I didn’t leave but should have. Living Colour at Birmingham Hummingbird on the Stain tour. About 4 people fell on top of me two songs in. Hobbled to the back and stood there on one leg, refusing to admit defeat. Turned out I’d broken my ankle...
  6. Also agree on it looking great without a pickguard.
  7. Great find on the Traynor. Fancied one for many a year.
  8. This. Leave it Alone off Living Colour’s Stain is a particularly great example to check out. Bloody love Wimbish.
  9. Bass, guitar, uke and harmonica. To some degree. Bass is ‘home’ though, always.
  10. Here’s my two... The Japanese Foto Flame Precision I’ll never sell because it’s ‘the one’. Weight, balance, tone, neck profile - it’s just perfect for me. I’ve had it 25 years. ‘76 Gibson Ripper - I picked this up for a daft price (about £300 if memory serves) a good few years back off eBay due to its condition and the mods it’s had. I fully planned on getting it back to ‘normal’ but quickly decided I wasn’t going to do that. It’s not a looker, it’s not pretty, but it’s a one of a kind, plays great and has the hottest damn pickup I’ve ever had in a bass. YOB bass for me too. And as battered about as I am.
  11. Assuming it’s actually still in stock. £199... https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/pre-loved-orange-terror-bass-amp-head
  12. Ten is a masterclass in tasteful fretless playing. Was my go to back when I was learning fretless.
  13. Yep, I’m Birmingham based and this has pretty much been my experience with both stores. GG knocks spots off PMT in every way for me.
  14. I’m not generally a fan of the larger stores and chains but I must say I’ve been most impressed with GG’s service both online and in store.
  15. I’m getting really fed up already of saying this myself...
  16. I’ve very little need for this at all but do keep looking at it. As such I hope this has been sold by the next time I look!
  17. Nowt to do with signalling to the band as a whole but I’ll latch onto this to say how much I dig the little nod that Willie’s son Lukas gives his Dad to come in for his part on this cover. He’s also right there ready in case he falters. Lovely stuff.
  18. No sympathy for them tbh and pleading innocence/for clemency but knocking out the merch that they are etc doesn’t fly. I was going to write a comment full of bad PJ puns in order to say the above but decided I’m a better man than that...
  19. Tough one to call purely because (for me at least) it’s a very different playing experience with a Precision to a Jazz. As above, on the face of it given the bands/styles of music you mention I’d say Precision. But that’s not much use if a Jazz style feels more comfortable to you... Are you purchasing blind after not playing bass at all for that long? If so I’d seriously consider waiting until you’re able to at least give a P and J style bass (at least of some description) a quick run out in a shop to give you a better starting point. The differences between the styles (pickup type and placement, neck, body shape etc) make a big difference to me with P and J basses.
  20. I’m planning on a pickup switch out on my 5er and had been looking at a Warman as didn’t want to spend much given the cheapness of the bass. He’s not currently got the 5 string pickup in stock though unfortunately.
  21. No experience with Warwicks I’m afraid but I’ve been stringing Precisions BEAD for years and love it. As above - widening of nut slots, slackening the truss rod a tad and correct setup and you should be fine. My strings of choice are the Ernie Ball Beefy Slinky.
  22. Keep checking back at Thomann. Always a chance they’ll get returns and sell them as B-stock with a few quid off. Was how I got my MB-5 when they were out of stock. Not a thing wrong with it, they just can’t sell them as A1...
