1. That is some amount of work going into that bass. I love the look of a stripped P bass. A small bit of Deacon related P bass. Phil Harris, once of Harris Hire, got a call asking if he had a stripped P bass for hire as Queen needed one for the shoot of Queen`s The Miracle. He had one he had bought 25 years before that had a crap hand painted red finish on it. They stripped off the paint, didn`t bother to lacquer it and gave it them. The bass became the most hired P bass and according to Phil, "It`s simply an astounding bass. Hit the low E and it vibrates like a rampant rabbit!" Incidentally, the article mentions that the P bass he played on Bohemian had been smashed to bits.
2. We are doing a pub gig this Saturday and we are getting £230. The starting point is usually £200 and the top end is about £250. I`m happy with that.
3. I have 2 and always have one in the gig bag just in case my amp goes pop. Silly not too at the price.
4. They get a lot of love on Talkbass. Not that I ever go there
5.
They weren't dead, that's what flats are like... Seriously, flats are a big part of the Steve Harris sound - if you're still not happy with it try a new set of flats & it might make all the difference.
Slightly off topic but Steve changes his flats after every gig to keep sounding brightish. Which is a bit missing the point if you ask me with flats but hey ho, if you are getting them gratis then why not.
6. Heft has become the new Tim!
7.
Welcome to BC and glad to hear of your return to the bass fold... Other more knowledgeable suggestions will follow, but the zoom B1on is very reasonably priced, has an aux in (for playing along to your mp3s) and a headphone out... so you may not need to run everything through the PC at all .
Wot he says. Cheap and good. Just get a Zoom charger at the same time, about £12.
8.
Never mind the beards, those are some spectacular trousers. Shame it's a black and white photo!
I can imagine Billy Smart waking up one morning and wondering why there was trouser shaped holes cut out of his big top
9. I bought a six string guitar at Christmas and have discovered that Im more useless at playing a guitar than I am at bass. It now sits on a stand in the corner of the lounge. Still, the wife thinks it looks good as an ornament.
10. I bought a brand new US P bass in 09. Black and maple and fitted a black pickgaurd. Only used it for 1 gig down in a pub in Helensburgh then sold it on here. Cant remember the reason why but it was GAS more than likely.
11. Any Yamaha or Ibanez will be a good bass to start out on. They tend to have an overall better reputation for decent build quality than say a Squier which can be a bit flaky sometimes. The Yam 170 you mentioned is a good start.
12.
obviously
Well Dan, thats you told
13. I had one a while back and thought it was terrible. Sounds like mud (which might be the sound you are looking for) and as said above, it`s neck heavy. The tuners were garbage as well. The only bass I owned that was worse was an Epiphone EBO. I don`t hate Epi`s by the way. I love the way a T/bird sounds, I just dont get on with the shape.
14. Strings direct do the official Fender ones. http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/bodies-necks-c5/necks-c585
15. I`m actually more surprised that you have kept the amp long enough to buy another badge. You do seem to have been through wads of amps recently.
16.
Clive is a bit of a hero in the vintage world. He calls his work 'restorations' rather than refinished. Some of his work is simply outstanding. This is not the best example to be fair, but then it did have a huge chunk taken out of it
I wasn`t meaning to run down Clive`s work. I have seen some photos of his work and it`s top notch. I was just trying to work out what bit of the bass he had worked on seeing as it is a bit of a state. Sorry, full of Mojo It must be the battery box repair.
17. "Paint re touching by Clive Brown" Eh?? A quick Google search shows Pino playing almost every bass know to man except a stack knob Jazz. And they have the cheek to ask for £80 economy delivery!! In what universe is £80 an economy delivery? I wouldn`t want Parcelforce delivering this.
18. In 2001 a mate who played guitar took me to McCormicks in Glasgow to get a bass. I knew bugger all about them as I looked at the Jim Deacon P basses they sold. But he spotted a Squier P bass special in metalic red and after a play on that, he decided that it was much better than the others I paid £230 for it which seems mental now and one of the reasons McCormicks ain`t there no more I imagine. After a while, I tried to trade it in at Victor Morris (sellers of guitars, pa and crossbows and samuri swords-true) and they offered me £75 for it. Told them to stick it and ended up painting it green and shortly after broke it up for parts. Nah, don`t miss it at all.
19. I think Geddy bought the Jazz because it was only $200. He must have liked it tho.
20.
Really? What sort of cosmetic changes?
I swapped the bridge and control plate for black ones, spray painted all the pickgaurd screws black, stuck on a cheeky EBMM Stingray transfer and replaced the tuners with a set of Schallers.
21. As I play in an acdc covers band, I thought I had better get a Stingray of some description. Not having the cash to get a "real" one, I bought a Sterling Sub in black and maple and after a few cosmetic changes, I have to say I am well impressed with it. A set of flatwound Chromes are winging their way from Germany and will be going on as soon as they arrive.
22. I have the same amp into 2x Mi bass 12" cabs, rated at 250 watts and 8ohms each. It will be dinky doo!
23.
Yamaha Bb
Plus 1. The best sounding P basses with a Jazz pickup thrown in. I own a BB 1100s and a Nate Mendel and to be honest, the Yam sounds better. Imo of course.
24.
He's 62, he'll have to get up for a piss before too long.
Classic!! And true!
25. After trying to find a half decent singer for the last few months, I`m convinced that the most of the people on Gumtree, JMB etc are dreamers and/or plonkers. Age is no barrier for the disillusioned. Agree with putting an advert in yourself and don`t give up as there are some decent people out there. It`s just trying to find them!
