1. Naw. Better off with either the passive US jazz or the Geddy. Jez
2. I`m sorry but why all the "jaguar love"? You are much better off with a decent Jap jazz. The jags are heavy, have a crap active circut (on or off, no nice transition) and some of them are poorly shielded and buzz like heck. I loved mine for around 2 gigs and then it was Joe La Toff and no way would I get another one. Get a Geddy Lee. They look better, play better and you have great build quality. Just look how fast s/h Geddy`s go. Ducks for the backlash. Jez A proper Japanese guitar. (Even though it`s the original US one, but you get the jist!)
3.
I'm considering a punt on the FretLord fibre optics for my new Lace Helix, which has tiny side-dots & no front markers. Looks like they'll come in at about £35 for the set plus a second LED module (for a different colour) - including delivery & import tax. Not too much cash wasted if they turn out to be guff. Jon.
Jon I`ve ordered a blue set from the above guys for £29.16, plus the inport tax of course. Thought the other ones were too expensive, around £90 to take a chance on something that might just be a fad. Going to stick them on my P bass. As soon as I get them on, I`ll post piccys. Jez
4.
Not sure that quote has any truth behind it at all. I certainly have never ever seen anything of the sorts quoted anywhere and from the people I know who have worked with him, they say he is one of the most in time reliable bass players around. Yes he plays a lot of eights but I bet you can't play ever single one of those notes dead on time, every time. That something Adam is spot on for doing without any drop in or retakes which is why he is considered a very tight solid bass player. Now, if that quote is about Bono then that makes sense. I have seen quotes like that relating to Bono and even Bono admits he can't play guitar.
Linus This will sound a bit anal retentive but what the heck! The book u2 by u2, page 102, to quote Bono "He could play really complicated things easily and then be unable to clap in time, and you`d just be left scratching your head" The other quote about being "able to play out of time in time" is also from the same book but I can`t find it. I`m not that anally retentive! I actually like the band and I think his bass playing fits the songs perfectly, as it should considering they write the stuff. Jez
5. Adrians a nice bloke and good to deal with, no messing about. If you meet him get him to show you his 70`s jazz. Mojo in bucketloads! Thank god I`m skint. Jez
6. So it seems like his Laklands are no longer in use? I`ll take em off his hands! That Warwick is bloomin ugly. I like this quote from one of the band "Adam can play out of time, in time for ages" Jez
7. I love P basses and I think that the MIM sunburst is a terrible colour. Now if it looked like the American Standard............no bugger would by the usa one! Jez
8. Oh Great Lord of Punk. Your Highness. Played the VMJ last night at a gig with the standard pup`s and even in my crap opinion, I`m gonna need different pickups. Are the Wizzards worth it? Have you upgraded the pots and wiring? Jez
9. A bump for Fat Freddy of The Freak Brothers lovely looking Gibson. There are lots of nice gear about just now. Just a pity I have non cash! Jez
10. Never seen anyone get a decent sound out of a tin of ravioli before. Jez
11. Touche! Actually I think that they are really nice looking basses but they weren`t for me. Jez
12. Fender players-retaliate!! Both the EBO and the EB3 are piles of complete and utter kak! I know, I have owned both for a short time. EBO given away, EB3 sold to an old guy who wanted to be Jack Bruce. Oh, how I laughed! Have you learned your lesson Grasshopper? Yes, they are plies of Kak Master!! And here endeth the lesson! Jez
13. Squire Affinity P bass, bog standard except I have fitted a Fender white 3 ply pickgaurd as the original was crap! I bought this s/h as I was gonna use the body with a maple neck but ended up using it as a gig backup. It has a chip at the neck pocket and a further chip on the back. Both of these have been coloured black and are hard to spot. Thre are a few other scuffs but nothing bad. It plays okay and the neck is in good nick. Had it on gumtree for £75 but if someone wants it you can have it for £60. Good buy even for the body. Collection only from Paisley or I could meet somewhere nearby. Jez
14. Speakers. Set of Eltax floor standing, 80 cm high, each speaker has 2x6" woofers and a tweeter. They are beech coloured and are in perfect nick. They sound really good, will piss off the neighbours big time! Marantz CD52 mark 2, with remote control, works perfectly and was one of the best players in it`s price range (£250) when it came out. Still a great sounding player. Collection from Paisley. Drop me a pm. Jez
15. Ah good point. Dont think it does but I`ve ordered it noo! Jez
16. Munk As you and I play the same sort of boozers (have been offered a gig or two in the Dakota down your way). Sorry if these are on the lists already mentioned. Anything by The Killers Anything by Kings of Leon Jenny dont be hasty by Paulo Nutjob (the women love it) Folsom prison blues by Johnny Cash-trust me, 2nd set, everbody pissed, killer! These songs have been scientificaly tested on the pub goers of the West of Scotland by us! Ones to avoid....I know, we tried em recently and they died on their ar*e! Play that funky music Anything by Biffy Clyro Innocent by Stereophonics Burn baby burn by Ash. The drummer picked this one, says it all! Hope that helps. Jez
17. Right, after reading all the views and having a think about it, here is the plan..... I`m gonna keep my Eden and have ordered one of these: When it comes I will just watch the volume and stick on my long lead and see how it sounds. After I thought about it, why should I mess around just to suit the singer and guitarist. They will still moan anyway! Cheers, Jez
18. The guitarist? Through the pa? Naw, he needs to use his amp up loud or the effects don`t work apparently. I think I`ll try the sansamp-mixing desk-powered monitor set up on friday and take my amp with me in case it`s mince. I going to get myself one of those stands. Could be the answer and they aint all that expensive. Cheers for all the input so far! Jez
19.
Jez - if the band are complaining you are too loud then chances are you are too loud. Sometimes players stand by their amps and claim they can't hear anything whilst everybody else quietly wipes the blood from their ears. It may be that if you angle the cab, raise the cab or stand elsewhere you'll see why people are saying you are too loud. It's difficult to comment further without being there but I think your answer lies in the positioning of the player or the amp. Although I suspect it's not the solution bass through the PA can sound fine & I've done it before - certainly at acoustic gigs.
Burrito Your spot on there! Most of the places we play we are stuck in a corner and space is at a premnium. I end up standing right beside my amp and as you say, cant hear a bloomin thing. Half the time I am in with the punters! That is the reason I was thinking of putting it through the pa and using a wedge powered monitor and the sansamp. I`m not too bothered about not using an amp as the Sansamp has sounded good in the past. If it`s good enough for Geddy, it`s good enough for me Mabye I`ve just answered my own question. Stewart:The pa consists of a 1200watt powered mixer, 2 powered monitors and a set of Peavey pro speakers. Not a big set up but it`s ok for the places we play. Jez
20. I guess that this has been asked before, but not by me so here goes... The band I am in constanty moans that I play far too loud. Whilst using my Ashdown with a 15inch speaker, I had to have it loud just to hear myself. I now use an Eden 2x10 and can hear myself better and I prefer the sound from it. But still they moan. As I have a Sansamp and a powered monitor for myself and drummer boy, I am thinking of using the Sansamp and sticking into the powered mixer and putting the bass through the pa speakers and using the monitor for, well, monitoring. (Before anyone states the obvious, I know that is the way you are supposed to use the Sansamp). This should help bring down the on stage (corner of pub we are jammed into) volume and should keep me and the numpty singer and guitarist`s happy. What do ya think? If you use this set up, what are the + and the -? Cheers, Jez
21. A shout also for Emory Gordy. He played bass on some of Elvis`s early 70`s sessions, notably one of his best songs, burning love (which is what you get for spending a night with some of the females around these parts!). Fantastic little bass line. Don`t know if he played on any live dates but Emory was the guy he used when Jerry was off doing other stuff. But Jerry Scheff is a cool dude! Another fact pop pickers, Jerry played on the Doors album LA Woman and would have joined them if Morrison hadn`t popped his clogs. Oops! Just noticed that this has been mentioned before. Ah well. Jez
22. Right Wayne, spill the beans! Where did you get the Fender transfer for the VMJ. If you want to keep it a secret pm me. (Ooh er missus!). What`s the script about the trombone? Is it one of those Where`s Wally things? jEZ
23. Took the Jazz down to rehersals on wednesday night and played it through a Ashdown ABM and a Ampeg 8x10. It sounded quite good with the stock pickups. I usually use full neck and about 3/4 on the bridge with the tone around half way (better watch out, I`m begining to sound like a bass player). Overall impression:quite good for the price, altough I don`t know how it would fare with the standard tuners and bridge. I`m gonna keep the stock pickups for now and the only other mods will be an upgrade for the pots and jack and mabye a Fender logo and a gloss finish to the headstock. Here`s a couple of photos, Jez
24.
Sand all of the paint off down to bare wood, then finish it with some 1200 grit sand paper then build up and sand back at least 20 coats of primer then depending on the finish you want put on several coats of either nitrocellulose for a matt finish or I use Plastikote paint for a gloss finish that's the basics I use. *Disclaimer* I am not a specialist I have built up my technique on several of my own basses and after trial and error this is what I have ended up with, if you need any help PM me.
Wayne. What kind of punk rocker are you? 1200 grit sandpaper? 20 coats of primer? Joe Strummer must be turning in his grave (unless he was cremated!). Jez
25. You dont know who Rory is???????? Shame on you. There is a saying in Dublin, "First there was Jesus, then there was Rory" The reason I was asking about the band was a couple of months ago I was looking for something to keep me busy and I e mailed a girl called Emily and there seemed to be a guitarsit on board who played with a Rory tribute band. I think his name was/is Phil. It never went any further than e mails but they seemed like decent people. I wish you all the best and mind and give me a shout when you are gigging and I will come down and give you pelters, I mean support. Jez
