2. Played a gig in a pub in Gourock ( on the Clyde coast) last night, first time there, £150 between four. Worked out at £30 each and 30 in kitty for drinks as it was costing us a fortune for rounds. Will ask for more money next time as we were asked to come back (must be something wrong with their hearing!). Up here most pubs pay from around £150 to £280. No doubt some guys get more but hey, I`d do it for nothing if it gets me out playing. Jez
3.
He's been running the Jan Akkerman Band for a few years now. As I understand it, there was a bit of a falling out!!!
Great band. Jan left in 76 on the eve of a british tour as him and Thjis fell out about the direction of the band. Jan liked to change the way things were played most nights and felt that the band was becoming stale. Saw Jan at the Renfrew Ferry round about 2002 and the guy was fantastic. Jez
4. Four hours to set up! That`s taking the p**s. I`m in a 4 piece and I like to allow 1 hour to set up. This equates to:30 mins to set up and the rest of the time to stand with the guitarist and singer asking ourselves when will the bloomin drummer turn up. As for a sound check? That`s usually the first song (usually a snow patrol number that the singer likes to start with) and getting someone who comes with us to tell me what needs to go up or down. Strangley they always tell me to turn the bass down. Bloomin phillistines. Jez
5.
There's an epi explorer bass for sale on edinburgh gumtree, not sure if it's cheap or not... link Never played one, don't know what to expect And by the way, first post :-)
That bass is on the Glasgow gumtree today and he was looking for £200 a couple of weeks ago but has droped the price to £150 now. Jez
6. I recently stuck a badass2 on my Jap 57 re-issue and to tell the truth dont notice much differance. Having said that, some people swear by them. And it cost me £60. There was a thread on this subject a few weeks ago. Go for the Geddy Lee, brilliant Jap bass. Jez

Competence

First thing I could play all the way through was down down by the Quo! It took me about 6 weeks! I reckon I will be competent a fortnight next Julember. There again I hate practicing. The only reason I`ve not been kicked out my band for "lapses" is I own most of the pa and am the only one who can work the thing! Good tip that for guys just starting out! Jez
8. Well done, good choice. You will enjoy it better than than the Jag! Jez
9. If you are gonna use it for serious gigging, I would get a Geddy Lee jazz instead of a Jag. Had one and if I used it in active mode and there was a decent lighting system it buzzed like no ones business. If you check the various forums on the net, it seems to be quite a common problem. It needs some decent shielding to sort it. It does not effect them all and possibly the problem has been rectified. Also the bass and treble controls were like an off/on switch and you cant blend the pickup volumes like you can on a Jazz. Mines was a heavy bugger as well. Result, sold it and bought a mexican jazz. Having said all that, it did look cool.
10. Now can anybody see themselves down the local stagg and duck on a saturday night, you reach into the case and pull out this green thing. ( I know that it`s a beginners instrument but at that price, don`t think so). What the fluck is that the drummer asks? And let`s face it drummers are on the whole, thick. You mention that it`s been designed by one of the last decade`s most famous bass players whose head has gone right up his own arse. Worse than that only you know that you paid 500 quid for the privalage of getting the piss taken right out of ya! Naw, not for me. Jez
11. Flippin eck! Love that distorted sound! And I don`t like Epi`s. Might take your word about it and get an Ebo and mod it a bit. I never thought I would say that. Jez
12. Agree with previous post`s. Get the bass, which is one of the coolest looking out there and replace the large humbucker pickup, change the pots and the 3 way switch which are s**t, move the strap button where the neck joins the body to counteract the neck dive and viola! it will sound less s**te than they do to start with! I had one but sold it to a guy in Glasgow who said that he grew up with Jack Bruce and wanted to sound like him. Fat chance with a standard one! Or look for an older Korean one. They were supposedly better than the modern Chinese ones. Jez
13. Cheers for the replies folks. Jez
14. Anybody got one/owned one? May be looking for a corvete model and would appreciate any comments. Cheers, Jez
15. Lovely looking bass. Recently bought an american standard P bass, black with the maple board, which sounds great. I think that being strung through the body has made a positive difference to the sound. They had a sunburst jazz at the same time but I have a nice mexican sunburst jazz so went for the P instead. I agree with the pricing sitiuation, it`s getting out of hand. Jez
16. In the past I have had the urge to mess about with various basses and have enjoyed it. You can buy some decent upgrades from the like of WD music. Another place that is quite good is http://stores.ebay.co.uk/bassguitarpartsdirectuk. I now keep an old body and neck to mess around with. If you set yourself a budget and shop about, you will enjoy the experiance, end up with something unique and if it don`t work out, sell the parts on. Go for it! Jez
17. Your ears do not fool ya. On my Tribby the passive is in the up position as you look at the bass face on, not as is shown in the diagram that you can download. Jez
18. Up for sale is my ART B100 short scale bass. Bought 6 weeks or so ago from Merchant city music in Glasgow for £320. It is in as new condition. Selling as I can`t get used to the size. It`s doing me head in so looking to move it on. It`s got more of an older, thumpy sort of sound if you get me drift. I`m looking for £165. If you fancy it you are welcome to come over and have a blast. I will not post so collection only. Jez
19. So, Sob, Sob. Gonna stop running down P basses please. I just bought a black one with maple neck on sunday! I tried it against the Lakeland P ( which was going for £699-£100 cheaper than the Fender ) but I went for the Fender as it sounded great and after years of owning active basses I came to the conclusion that I only needed one good sound and that`s all the p has. Plus it looks damm cool, imo of course. The Lakeland sounded great as well but what the heck. Jez
20. My G&L L2000 tribute has a beast of a neck! At the nut it`s 44mm and feels quite a handful at first but no probs after playing it for a bit. It might feel strange comin from an Ibby but it`s better than any Fender I ve played. It`s a great bass, every sound you can think of, passive and active. The build quality is superb as well. Mines was £560 brand new from Hartnoll Guitars. I bought it over the net but it arrived nicely set up. Here`s a wee piccy. Jez
21. The nicest sunburst mexican I have seen. Sounds really nice, tortishell plate fitted and I will include a spare black WD one I have kicking about. It has a new set of elites fitted and is in great condition. The only reason for selling is that I am playing my G&L trbby all the time now. Looking for £230. You would have to come and collect the bass from Paisley, just south of Glasgow. Cheers Jez
22. Bought one of these new short scale basses a couple of weeks ago from a local shop. I have owned quite a few ibbys in the past and they have all been good basses with no probs. The thing is, this one sounds knid of boomy, its the only way I can describe it. Its especially noticeable when you play the E on the bottom string at the 12th fret, it doesn`t sound right to me at all, very, very boomy. It sounds okay over the rest of the neck I took it back and they gave it a pro set up as it was a wee bit buzzy, no more buzzing but it still dont sound right to me. It sound a bit like a Epi eb3 I had 2 years ago. Does anyone else have one of these and if so how`s it sound? Is it because it`s a short scale? I rehersing on tues and am going to give our guitarist a shot and see what he thinks but any opinions would be appreciated. Jez
23. I read a interview in bass magazine last year I think, with Glen Matlock who said that the bass he was playing on stage was a mexican p bass that Fender gave him as a freebie as his other p was an oldie and too good to take out on tour. If it`s good enough for him then I say go for it. He did play a ricki at some point as well. Anyway, good luck with the gig, sounds like fun! Jez
24. Having seen the p bass with the additional humbucker in the "yamaha attitude retro" topic in the bass guitar section of gear, I have had a moment of clarity! I am thinking of adding a soapbar pickup in the bridge position of my Jap p bass. I can get a new Wilkinson one for £12 which should do the job and wont make me cry if it dont work out. Can anyone give me advice regarding wiring the thing up. Can I wire it up to the existing wiring and fit a mini switch to flick between the two pickups? Is this a good or bad idea? Have you a better idea? I can solder and knocking the crap out of the wood wont be a problem but if anyone has done something similar can you give me some pointers/thing to watch out for. Cheers Jez
25. Get rid of wife as I did (oh alright, she got rid of me!) then you can buy as many as you like! Our parting had nothing to do with the bass collection-9 at that time-but the fact that she said that I was a loud mouthed twat. And she was right! Jez
