If you are gonna use it for serious gigging, I would get a Geddy Lee jazz instead of a Jag. Had one and if I used it in active mode and there was a decent lighting system it buzzed like no ones business. If you check the various forums on the net, it seems to be quite a common problem. It needs some decent shielding to sort it. It does not effect them all and possibly the problem has been rectified. Also the bass and treble controls were like an off/on switch and you cant blend the pickup volumes like you can on a Jazz. Mines was a heavy bugger as well. Result, sold it and bought a mexican jazz. Having said all that, it did look cool.

Now can anybody see themselves down the local stagg and duck on a saturday night, you reach into the case and pull out this green thing. ( I know that it`s a beginners instrument but at that price, don`t think so). What the fluck is that the drummer asks? And let`s face it drummers are on the whole, thick. You mention that it`s been designed by one of the last decade`s most famous bass players whose head has gone right up his own arse. Worse than that only you know that you paid 500 quid for the privalage of getting the piss taken right out of ya! Naw, not for me. Jez

Agree with previous post`s. Get the bass, which is one of the coolest looking out there and replace the large humbucker pickup, change the pots and the 3 way switch which are s**t, move the strap button where the neck joins the body to counteract the neck dive and viola! it will sound less s**te than they do to start with! I had one but sold it to a guy in Glasgow who said that he grew up with Jack Bruce and wanted to sound like him. Fat chance with a standard one! Or look for an older Korean one. They were supposedly better than the modern Chinese ones. Jez

Lovely looking bass. Recently bought an american standard P bass, black with the maple board, which sounds great. I think that being strung through the body has made a positive difference to the sound. They had a sunburst jazz at the same time but I have a nice mexican sunburst jazz so went for the P instead. I agree with the pricing sitiuation, it`s getting out of hand. Jez

In the past I have had the urge to mess about with various basses and have enjoyed it. You can buy some decent upgrades from the like of WD music. I now keep an old body and neck to mess around with. Your ears do not fool ya. On my Tribby the passive is in the up position as you look at the bass face on, not as is shown in the diagram that you can download. Jez

So, Sob, Sob. Gonna stop running down P basses please. I just bought a black one with maple neck on sunday! I tried it against the Lakeland P ( which was going for £699-£100 cheaper than the Fender ) but I went for the Fender as it sounded great and after years of owning active basses I came to the conclusion that I only needed one good sound and that`s all the p has. Plus it looks damm cool, imo of course. The Lakeland sounded great as well but what the heck. Jez

My G&L L2000 tribute has a beast of a neck! At the nut it`s 44mm and feels quite a handful at first but no probs after playing it for a bit. It might feel strange comin from an Ibby but it`s better than any Fender I ve played. It`s a great bass, every sound you can think of, passive and active. The build quality is superb as well. Bought one of these new short scale basses a couple of weeks ago from a local shop. I have owned quite a few ibbys in the past and they have all been good basses with no probs. The thing is, this one sounds knid of boomy, its the only way I can describe it. Its especially noticeable when you play the E on the bottom string at the 12th fret, it doesn`t sound right to me at all, very, very boomy. It sounds okay over the rest of the neck I took it back and they gave it a pro set up as it was a wee bit buzzy, no more buzzing but it still dont sound right to me. It sound a bit like a Epi eb3 I had 2 years ago. [attachment=21643:3014_large.jpg] Does anyone else have one of these and if so how`s it sound? Is it because it`s a short scale? I rehersing on tues and am going to give our guitarist a shot and see what he thinks but any opinions would be appreciated. Jez

I read a interview in bass magazine last year I think, with Glen Matlock who said that the bass he was playing on stage was a mexican p bass that Fender gave him as a freebie as his other p was an oldie and too good to take out on tour. If it`s good enough for him then I say go for it. He did play a ricki at some point as well. Anyway, good luck with the gig, sounds like fun! Jez

Having seen the p bass with the additional humbucker in the "yamaha attitude retro" topic in the bass guitar section of gear, I have had a moment of clarity! I am thinking of adding a soapbar pickup in the bridge position of my Jap p bass. I can get a new Wilkinson one for £12 which should do the job and wont make me cry if it dont work out. Can anyone give me advice regarding wiring the thing up. Can I wire it up to the existing wiring and fit a mini switch to flick between the two pickups? Is this a good or bad idea? Have you a better idea? I can solder and knocking the crap out of the wood wont be a problem but if anyone has done something similar can you give me some pointers/thing to watch out for. Cheers Jez

Here`s a piccy of My Jap 57 re-issue. I got it about 2 years ago from Guitar Emporium, cost £540 if I remember. It`s got an alder body, had a Us pickup fitted, it had the chrome covers but I junked them. They looked good but were a pain in the preverbial. Put on a black Allparts scratch plate instead of the gold one. It looks white in the photo but is actually knid of yellowy/blonde. It has a Status pickup and Status strings fitted for now. This is the bass I took the maple neck off of and stuck on my Mike Drint Squire. I just cant seem to stop messing around with my basses! How about the Ibanez ART B100 short scale. It`s got a set neck and looks kind of Les Paulish. Not played one yet but Merchant city music and Guitar guitar have them for £320. Should be well put together as its an Ibby. Jez [attachment=20362:3014_large.jpg]

My band played last night, in a pub, in a town called Elderslie (birth place of William Wallace dont ya know!) to 12 people! 3 were barmaids, 5 were folk we had dragged along on promise of free beer (ha, ha, we lied!) and 4 were punters. Mind you, the 4 punters said we were bloomin good. Ah well, still got paid and got the promise of more bookings. Get out there my good man and play with anyone you can, even if it`s not your style of music. You`ll improve quicker and have a good laugh along the way if you can find the right bandmates. But gettin the right bandmates is a whole other story..... Jez

I should also mention that my Mike Dirnt was the Squire model so dont know if the neck pocket is the same shape as the Fender. But if it fits, it would look real smart! Go for it! Jez

The holes didn`t line up so I drilled new ones, fitted a F stamped neck plate from bass guitar parts direct and Bob`s your funny auntie! It looked great! Until I noticed that at the body end the two necks are a diffirent shape and it left a gap where body meets neck. I lived with it for a while but it ended up doing me head in and I swithched them back. I quite like the neck on the Squire anyway. Mabye with a different neck you wont have this problem but I would check before you star drilling holes- unlike myself! Cheers , Jez
