1. I had one of these for a while and it was a cracking bass for the money. GLWTS.
2. Hmmm. I'm just going to leave this here. http://www.dv247.com/guitars/jandd-pb-vintage-1963-4-string-bass-guitar-fiesta-red--208552
3.
Give an Affinity a try in the shop. You might be pleasantly surprised, I abed a bunch of Squier Jazzes a few months and walked away with the Affinity. It blew the others out of the water.
The build of the Affinity basses is pretty good, I found the electronics to be noticeably noisier and the pickups to be less powerful than the VM basses, but both of those issues can be resolved with a soldering iron and about £80 spent on a decent wiring loom and pickups. However if I was buying blind I would spend the extra on a VM/CV to reduce the likelihood of picking up a dud.
4. Depends on your budget. I personally think the VM Precisions are the best compromise between quality and value, coming in at sub-£270 price points in most cases. I owned one for a little while and it was a cracking bass. That said, the top of the (Squier) range CV basses are phenomenal. They're a little more, but if you can afford the cash they're worth the investment. It's worth noting that the CV and Matt Freeman basses are virtually the same (hardware, body wood, pickups and origin) it's just the fretboard that differs, so if you're deciding between those two it is safe to make a call based on which you prefer the look of.
5.
Of course a bent bit of tin could work....
This. At least it gives people the option of replacing it with a decent 'mass market' bridge (I.e. a 201)
6. Very nice! Those late 70's Precisions are seriously good bang for the buck. I've played a couple now (including Lozz's!) and they're amazing!
7. Bargaintastic. Shame they went with a three point bridge but that would be my only gripe.
8. What a collection. And what a fantastic addition! Congrats.
9.
PPPS: Time for Blackstar to venture into bass perhaps??
Mmmm valves. This is an idea I can get behind.
10. I don't know for sure but if I were to speculate it might be that the FSR basses are made in Mexico as opposed to the standard Aerodyne which is made in Japan. Just a thought.
11. Can't rate them highly enough. My one stop shop, for bass things anyway.
12. Three for me, and I think that's how it's going to stay. Fender Deluxe Active Precison - my first Fender, had it for just over 10 years Fender Mark Hoppus Sig - the bass I lusted after for 10 years, finally got it this year Squier Bass VI - pure indulgence. I thought it was cool/different, and it's so much fun to play!
13.
I believe I bought that one from you and sold it to Rumple... typical Basschat merry-go-round...
You did indeed!
14. I concur! I had one of these for a while and they're ridiculously good for the money.
15.
I think that's a licensed Fender copy Mighty Mite neck that someone's put their own hardware and badly placed transfer on.
+1 you can see the MM stamp on the neck heel.
16. Nice bass Lozz. How many P's will this leave in the stable? For others' interest (as my rack is full) is this a P or J neck?
17.
Nice gesture Dave. I was happy to see you win it on the day and pleased to see that you will helping to make another BC'er happy.
Thanks Gary, I've already got my fair share of instruments so it seems only apt to share the love!
18.
Hi, It looks lovely from the picture! My brothers starting a band, but they can't rehearse with volume so he'd love this! I can meet tomorrow evening if you like ?
Sounds like a perfect home! Tomorrow is a bit of a write off for me but I will drop you a PM and we can work something out.
19. Picture. It's a lovely looking thing too!
20. I won this as a prize at the Herts Bass Bash earlier in the year - it was in need of a little TLC and some new strings, which I gave it, however moving time and a general feeling that I need to scale back my operations means I need to pass it on. As it was a charitable donation to a raffle from another Basschatter I don't want any money for it, only the satisfaction of knowing that it will go to a home where it will be played. I'm based in London and would be willing to meet up at some point over the next few weeks, ideally before I move to my new place, or I could ship within the UK for the price of postage, which I'm happy to arrange at my local postie. Let me know. Dave
21. Just sold my Mexican Precision to Dave. He's a top gent who's kept me posted throughout as he needed to sell his bass (thanks Ian!) before he could buy mine. Pleasure doing business with you Dave, and I hope the bass treats you as well as it has me!
22.
Thanks folks. Reckon the J&D has to be the one.
They're cracking basses. £120 brand new is unbelievable value for the quality you get.
23. It's not American, but you could buy yourself a Nate Mendel P which has a 'thin' P neck, and perhaps more importantly, is candy apple red. If you were to restrict me to the two options listed I would go for the US Standard. There seems little point in buying a bass to change everything but the body and neck! EDIT: RE your question about where to get the necks: http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/bodies-necks-c5/necks-c585
24.
Just respray the black pick guard
And add gold hardware and BOOM.
