Damn I thought Hobgoblin ale were doing basses now
You're not the only one to get suckered in.
anything trios with a singer/guitarist should really do the trick. something like greenday or blink 182?
^^ I was going to suggest pretty much any modern pop-punk band, 95% of them are singer-guitarists when they're three piece's.

Wizard 84's? Or possibly ask them nicely if they'll do you some overwound beasty pups? They'll be passive, but you can keep vol/vol/tone and the output will be much better (monsterous if you ask Andy and co to overwind them).
circuit design that will even survive running with no speakers connected
Grabs my attention as a very good safety feature. And like mentioned, the diagrams cannot be right, valve amps pretty much always have an impedance selector yeah? (I don't own a valve amp).
so somehow your rewarded or something for posting lots?
I wouldn't call it a reward, I'd say it's just a perk, by no means are post counts the be all and end all, some people have posted brilliant informative posts and have a post count under 10.
I MUST have done more than 250 posts by now...!!
Off topic don't count chap, so you've still got another 64 to do.

Ask on Statii.com if you get no response here, lots of status owners and you should be able to find one near you.

My god...it's full of apricots!

It's only about £6000, a veritable bargin for a coffee table.

28.0k ohm ? That's crazy output! Does it sound good?

What the hell is a "pocket", more so a "deep pocket"?
Buzz replied to thepurpleblob's topic in General Discussion
Personally I think "deep in the pocket" is a euphemism for having a CPW (crafty pocket w*nk) on stage. Like the others have said, it's pretty much when you've locked onto the drums and and are "feeling" it. -
For a complete beginner, I'd say some Greenday (Warning as it's got nice semi walking bassline, or Minority as it's easy peasy) or Blink 182 (Anthem Part II, Dammit, All The Small Things. perhaps What's My Age Again, or Rock Show). For people who can play a bit and want a bit more of a challenge, I'd go with Rage Against The Machine: Killing In The Name, timing is easy, but hammer on's and it's over all the strings strings makes it a challenge initally, just gotta watch out for the flourish on the 2nd verse. It's also a nice introduction to drop D tuning. Or on a more classical sland, the melody from Greensleeves, fairly simple once you work it out, and it's quite a good transcribing exercise if you can partly read treble clef but not bass clef.

[s]Winamp. It'll play all those (might have to download an extra plugin or two, but it's really simple to do so, but I doubt you'll have to), and the library isn't bad either. It's been my music player of choice for the past 5 years, I only use WMP when I want to listen to single albums/mp3 as it's tied into the context menu and won't disrupt my Winamp playlist.[/s] Winamp is PC only, didn't read the op properly.
No updates as yet... Have asked Jon for some pics.. so hanging in there! I think this build thead only has like.. one picture on it! A far cry from the original Doodle thread!
And you've only got yourself to blame for that considering all the extra work you've given and drummed up for Mr Shuker, can't really fault him for not having time to take pictures any more.

Oooh, trans black burst, with that wood, that's going to be very pretty at the very least.
Agreed, if you're going to have a valve amp, have an all-valve amp.
Hmm, not quite true. I do believe there's a couple of amp manufacturers that have done slightly off the cuff methods to get a proper valve power amp stage (and the harmonics and/or overdriven sound not present in solid state amps) while not running 4/6/8 power valves, but giving you the same effect but with lower weight, smaller amp etc... DHA spring to mind, all valve pre and effects (I think), coupled to 1 (yes, one) power tube which is can be easily overdriven to the powerstage crunch and harmonics if you want, that's then reduced to line level via a dummy load (internal speaker), which is then pumped into a 400w Class D solid state power amp. That's the rough jist of it. There's at least one owned on this forum, and the DHA section contains the build thread of the prototype, iirc people who've heard it have said it sounds fantastic. I think Genz or Mesa do one with a similar method as well.

Very 70's Glam and Funk, I could see a certain Bootsy Collins with one of these if it had added sequins.

If it was given to me, yeah...but then I'd probably get it refinished.

[s]An acoustic(ish) night with a load of bands/artists hosted by Uni Portsmouth School of Rock around 8pm. Should be a good gig.[/s] When your housemates ask you if you want dinner cooked and you say no, if they offer to move their cooking plans forward to accomdate you, tactfully tell them to piss off and get your own food, otherwise you find that it won't happen and you'll have missed the chance to go and get seating at quite a busy gig, therefore meaning there's no point going.
Stradivarius. Nuff said?
Dunno on that, while I'm not a violin player, I do think with them reaching the millions that while they may be really good instruments, made of rare wood, handcarved with lots of love, I can't help but think that 90/95% of the "price" is name alone, with people just percieving it sounds better because they expect it to. Don't get me wrong, although instrument making is an artform, and can go wrong at any and every stage, it's very forumulatic for the "base" model. They've all got to have X, attached to Y via the use of Z etc... Not to mention they're instruments that amplify sounds by vibration in the wood, who knows, but other violins may have been made from the same trees/batch of wood, but by an equally skilled but unknown builder, they wouldn't fetch a fraction of the price if if they sounded better.

I can understand why on an emotional level, and it's also to do on a technical level as well, you're quite right, manufacturing has improved, and companies like Fender for example use that technology to turn out lots and lots of carbon copy guitars, hence why a Fender USA bass is around £750-800 new yet a Custom Shop hand built one is £3k. Early Fenders by all accounts were more hands on and had much better QC because of it, that's part of their percieved value. If you also take into account the manufacturing tolerances as well from a construction and electrical side, 50 years ago the tolerances were wider and everything was a bit less precise and sterile, part of that *might* contribute to the sound. You could also look at fretting the neck, now on mass produced it's done by machine, back then I think it was done by hand mostly. Saying that, I actually don't see the percieved worth of an older fender vs new ones, the new ones now have better bridges, rolled edges on fingerboards and a few other design tweaks, and frets can be sorted out with a stoning anyway if there is a problem. Perhaps there are a few examples, such as maple/rosewood with blocks, the 3 bolt neck, or a 70's pup distance on a jazz that are worth the money (current '70s style ones are MIM I think rather than MIA) as you can't get a new version currently.

Punch and high end? Seymore Duncan Quarter Pounder will probably be the one you want then. Or you can ring up Wizard Pickups (UK), where a p-pup will set you back £70, but they're happy to offer advice and custom wind pickups to how you tell them you want it to sound.
-
I like the styling, but then again I do own a T-bird. I'd say that the bass needs not only a proper bridge, but could do with a couple of proper soapbar pups rather than the p-j config, that would probably help a lot with the sound.
-
Might get away with a dob of superglue on the end of a thin metal rod, prop it in place and allow to dry, might allow enough leverage to pull the end out.
-
Bumpidy bump, having bought a second hand Epi T-bird and finding the E is rather close to the edge I'm looking for an adjustable bridge. *Should* fit even with the T-birds soaps, but measurements would be nice before I try and obtain one. Btw, Joe, where did you source yours from, it's nearly £100 to get one shipped from BPR due to low value of the £ to $ now.
