1. woah, the 75 RI is something special.
2. A few things I wish to add just as a point of principle. First: Stop believing all the bullshit about Mac's being rock solid stable when compared to Windows. They're not, they're just much harder to stuff up, which for the majority of users, is the same thing as being stable. Don't take this as pro-windows, for the majority who just want everything to work, yes a mac is the better option. Second: Apple OS's are no longer virus free paradises they were when they were niche computers. DO NOT RUN A MAC WITHOUT AV + FIREWALL. Period. I loathe Apple for this as although they've stopped tooting the line of "virus free" they're not telling people to protect themselves. Third: (The alternative option): Buy a normal laptop and put a Linux distribution on it like Kbuntu (KDE) or Ubutu (Gnome) or any of the other current distro's. A bit of learning will be required, but nothing that requires more than a little bit of effort, pretty much all current versions of linux are easy to install and use, they're no longer worthy of the reputation they rightfully gained in the past for being difficult. Not to mention they're mostly free and software is either free or cheap. Oh, just as a heads up, you don't have to buy a Mac to run any of the Mac OS's now, Apple relased their OS's for normal laptops a couple of years ago. Dual boot as you see fit and get a much better specced laptop for your money. That's all I'm adding to this topic, everyone else has covered good points and bad points, this was just an alternate view. Edit: If you go Mac, get a reconditioned one from the Apple UK online store, you'll save around £200-300 on average, netting you a better machine.
3. So, EBMM have just released some new strings (for our skinny brethren), News on UG.com. However, I fancy speculating if these new technologies will make it on to bass strings, and more importantly if they do, will they offer a new area of sound from our standard two materials, as steels are bright and zingy generally, whereas nickel are a bit more mellow and warmer. Having a quick look around, doesn't seem as if anyone else makes titanium strings, there might be a resoning behind that... So, what do you think folks, if they eventually make a bass version, will they sound alreet? Personally I think with Titanium being a harder metal than steel that they'll sound even harsher and brighter, but that's only a guess.
4. I would have said yes go, but quite frankly that's because I would probably have sod all else to do, but only playing bongos perhaps on a couple of tracks, not playing basslines on a guitar. As if you only play for a couple of tracks with one instrument, makes it seem like you're a friend who's doing a favour rather than a band member who's lacking a job role. But you've definitely got more important things to do, and they'll be better off as a two piece tonight anyway, yeah, you made the right decision to stay at home.
5. May I present, The Backstroke Of The West:
6. *downloads* *files away for tomorrow*
7. This tooooowwn, is coming like a ghost town, All the clubs have been closed down. This place, is coming like a ghost town Bands won't play no more. Too much fighting on the dance floor! Ah aaaahaha ahahahaha aaaahhaaaaaaaaa..etc....
8. Humbuckers. If I could get a Jazz with soapbars installed in the position of the single coils, I think I'd be in heaven for comfort, sound is obviously dependant on a number of things, but I like the huge space to rest my fingers on, and they sound much fatter generally. It's the reason I picked up another T-Bird, they sound great, although, I'd probably also like a J-MM config as well.
9. Ooo, that stings. Is it still cheaper even with the tax than buying it in Francoland?
10. That has the be the best response I've seen to one of Beefy's sillies, Welcome to BC AM! Oh, and sod the MM Jazz, go for an American Standard, or a non Fender brand where you'll get more for your money, and make sure you try them, the MM and Warwicks have very different necks. Sound is subjective, while a bass plays a large part, so does the amplification.
11. f***ing Paisley! Yes!
12. Why do you want a new bridge? The Ibby ones are fairly substantial, and most people upgrade their Fenders/Gibsons (or Ricks) because the original part is either rubbish (Fender's bent tin) or they need something with more adjustment (ie, replacing Gibbo's 3 point non adjustable one). You can pretty much go via the screws as *most* bridges *should* line up due to the nature of where the strings have to be, but not always, quite a few need new holes put in the bass so as to be in the correct position. Look in the hardware/repairs subforum: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showforum=12
13. Sell my 3 basses. Buy either a good 2nd Jazz, maybe a P. Start playing again from the very basics upwards. Maybe splash out on a 2x10 and a Green Giant (or similar priced small amp) when they become available and flog my Orange Crush 35B. Also next summer will hopefully see me finish refinishing my Les Paul copy guitar, then I can flog my Squier Tele as well.
14. I have to admit, it's a cunning idea. I remember this hitting the news a couple of years ago, I can't remember what raised the Police's suspicions. It also reminds me of a Cheech and Chong film, where cannabis resin was used to make casings for TV's iirc.
15. Crikey. Not far off a USA model that isn't.
16. Moving on Up you say? No? Aww. Amp is the way to go, I'd say something like a Warwick Profet 3.2 coupled with a 1x15" Hartke or their 2x10, Peavey is also a good cab brand. Gives room for expandability later.
17. Another one here who's had no problems with them when I order strings and picks (for g****r naturally) and misc other bits.
18.
.... I'll cry if I want to .... I assumed .... must be my age. (Happy birthday)
I couldn't bring myself to post that, but it's been sorely tempting all day. Happy Birthday NJ! And pics or it didn't happen!
19. Does he now produce wolf tones? /Out of the door as quick as a flash, coat tails flapping.
20. I like that, but like the others have mentioned, I wonder what happened next. Chavs don't have honour from what I know, so they'd probably get "revenge" by either doing the bike over or bricks though the window.
21. Argh's honest about it. Unless you really hit the big time as part of a successful band with a contract, which being honest, IS the dream that most muso's have, it's a difficult life. Even with a contract you're not always gonna have lots of money, I think it was Biffy Clyro (or a similar English band) who up until only a couple of years ago, had band members working in a chippy, while at they same time they were playing Reading/Leeds/Glasto et al with heavy Radio coverage and an album fairly high in the charts. S'not all roses. Besides, after being out on in my home town with a fairly popular English band a number of times, I don't think I'd like the interruptions to my privacy which is a requirement of being that popular (and therefore earning the money).
22. If you're buying new, go for the Ibby. The VMJ's are great, I have one, but I think if I was going new again, I'd be looking seriously into an ibby. Very impressed by their guitars when I've had a widdle. And Fender's are flavour of the month on the pop scene so you'll see loads of them around anyway.
23. Could be yours then Birdy that I've seen floating around the 'boards if you've posted it on here before.
24.
Wonder if anyone can tell me: Which years did Jazzes have blocks? I'd like a rosewood board / mop blocks, what years am I looking for?
70's for a geniune one (unless you get a mongrel like the above mentioned one), but you'll also have to contend with the 70's pup spacing (bridge pup is about 3/4 an inch further towards the bridge I think).
25. There's already a degree of confusion over a couple of year period when they got bought by CBS, they were using up their part supplies and cobbled together a few mismatched instruments. I think somone on here owns a late 60's jazz with blocks and a binded fretboard, all original iirc.
