  1. GreeneKing, Thank you for such a great post, I have been very absent from this forum for a while now, just having a dabble every now and then with it, this has mainly been due to having a diagnosed bout of depression and playing the bass guitar has just not been able for me really, to read what you had to say has inspired me to get myself in a gear and to get the bass out and get back on it. Hope all works well for you.
  2. Late to the party, but why so what, I have one, in fact one of the very first, arranged by Mr M himself, great bass guitar, very well balanced J/P set up and I like the logo. For the money, AMAZING quality imho.
  3. I was a subscriber for a long time time to this magazine (started with issue 1 ) Dave Swift aside, BGM has been rather lacking for some time, and the tribute article they did to Bernard Edwards the other month was poor.
  4. Often overused word, but in this case we have lost a Legend, RIP David Bowie thank you for the great music sir.
  5. It is sadly so, I had thought about starting a thread on this myself but busy playing the mans music, so cheer's mate, a thread worth starting.
  6. Another forum that I visit had a similar posts while back, so I copied their top ten and have posted it below, a lot of them have already appeared, as stated its not the best but the most memorable, a lot of people may not equate Good times with Chic as so much as being used on Rappers delight for example. The list does have a couple of interesting ones. So I share it with the good folk of Basschat, Happy new year. Peaches, My Girl Walking on the moon Stand by me The Chain Summer loving Good times. Another one bites the dust Fever. Love cats.
  7. Cold Play, respect to them as a band but I just cant play misery, that voice is dirge to me, Bono is the same (not as bad but getting there) when the music is wallowing in pity and is nothing but sorrow then I cant play it or listen to it.
  8. I would put forward My Girl, classic motown tune and you know within a note or two imho. Walking on the moon by the Police as another.
  9. We lost a warrior, the world of bass just got a whole lot quieter and bit more tame sadly, ride on brother, RIP LEMMY.
  10. Great player of the time, real nice pick sound, liked his voice and the band had some decent tunes, Locomotion was always a fave, liked the groove, Balmer and the Fender bass manual a good starting point for info on this bass that Mr Mc used.
  11. Alot have already been mentioned, but two for me who I really liked, more on the "new wave " front, Tony Wall from King, very tidy player and the late Benjamin Orr from the Cars, again another very tidy player.
  12. Jaco inspirational? without a doubt, for me his solo album, has some moments of pure genius, like a lot of playing, the groove on Come on come over, man that good.. BUT for some I can understand that his playing can sound like it has descended into cacophony doodling, the answer "its Jazz man" for me does not cut it, for me when you need a degree in music to have to understand what is being played, that to me is when the music has missed its point. (imho) Is Jaco the greatest bass player that ever lived, NO, there is no such thing, but was he a monster talent that was capable of some of the finest playing hell yes. But more Important who is the Japanese "guy" that is crazy stuff... what a great looking bass as well, I found Gangnam style by him to................ best ever!
  13. Andy67 that was actually Bernard Edwards showing and doing the slap part on Get it on.
  14. the sheer power of the opening chords of the Boys are back in Town, still sounds like an explosion. The sleaze of Touch to much by AC/DC The fuzz of Dance to the music.
  15. Big Fan of the man, very entertaining live, pleasure to talk to, one of the greatest bass players going, truly inspirational, but for me his work with Sly and the Family Stone is still the best, the band was so original and him and Greg Errico an amazing partnership, love it when the two of them and butch get together on his instruction vid, plus he always plays a real cool looking bass, plenty of power to brother Larry.
  16. https://youtu.be/S_piFS2Z8_U Still enjoy this one from a band that really could have been..............
  17. Put your foot on the monitor, play open strings whilst pumping your fist in the air! On a more serious note, enjoy the freedom, that's what I found when I worked in the one guitar format, get melodic when required, busy if needed, groove and keep that bottom end pumping under the solo or middle eights, and not forgetting that leaving space can be just as important as filling it, (listening does tend to cover this as our learned friend posted earlier). Have a good gig man.
  18. Just started getting into MxPx some decent power punk and a rather nice Stingray bass sound going on.
  19. the Good lady to went see Tina Turner a few years back and her mate couldn't make it, at the NIA iirc, so I went, DAMN, Tina rocked! I was gobsmacked at how heavy she was, her band was stunning, totally on the money and they rocked the hell out of the place.
  20. Indeed Skeet is a big fella, and he is The Bass in Yo face as Mr Clinton used to say, not a bad run is it, funkadelic, Parliament and Maceo Parker. Was he sporting a rather stunning looking Jazz shaped bass made by Brubacker Guitars?
  21. RIP THE Animal, metal drumming just got a little tamer in the world.
  22. Indeed He was found dead the next morning by Mr Rodgers himself iirc, sad sad day, that man had groove and then some.
  23. Status all the way, but their neck is more akin to a Ray's in profile than a Jazz. But they are nice and flat, very smooth and their stability is awesome.
