1. Hi Bassgalaxy, I am only aware of two Kolsteins in the UK. My removable-necked version (which I am most definitely not selling) and BC'er bassace's (he bought a fixed-neck Busetto from me a couple of months back). I do think these are the most beautiful travel basses available but there are other 'bass-looking' (as opposed to EUB-looking) alternatives, eg, Eminence - you could try BC'er Mr_Bassman as he owns a removable-necked one and has listed it for sale/trade on his signature. Here's his BC home page http://basschat.co.uk/user/143-mr-bassman/
2. Afraid I don't do arco so I'm the wrong person to ask. The guy I got them from said they are better for arco than Spiro Mittels, if that helps (at least a little bit)
3. I managed to get hold of a set of prototypes. First impressions are I like the tension of the D and G - slightly higher than my Spiro Weichs and with more volume. They will cut through nicely I think, I am a bit surprised the E and A are not very growly though as I associate that lovely buzzy growl with Danny's sound. Right now to be honest I prefer the Spiro E and A. That said these strings have only been on my bass less than 24 hours so I need to let them settle. If things don't change much, though, I can see me ending up with a half and half set of Spiro E/A and 'Danny' D/G or maybe just the Spiro E
4. Roberto sold me a set of double bass strings. Well packed, posted fast, can't ask for more. Happy to be the first to contribute to his feedback thread
5. Good shout, amazing bass line, played immaculately
6. Was a very good gig at Bush Hall too. S'how I feel about my band's last couple of gigs (Half Moon, Green Note) - great to end the year on a high and with the promise of an even better 2013 in prospect* * musically and for you Nige personally now that Diane's on the road to recovery
7. Ad, PM me your address and I'll stick an old set of black nylons in the post to you and a rubber pick. I have never had to re-cut the nut of my Precisions or Jazzes, swapping to/from black nylons, so you could change your strings in 5 minutes, ie, you could easily swap back from these to back-up steel roundwounds for noisy gigs in no time at all
8. Re amp, I am sure if you only have a few gigs, Jack or i could lend you something appropriate (eg, he has my old Phil Jones Briefcase combo) rather than you spend moolah. However if you wanted to do so, you just need something relatively uncoloured and un-gnarly. There's some very cheap gear on BC that would fit the bill (eg, Deaver has a GK 200MB combo for just over £200 with gigbag, which used to be mainstay of travelling DB players)
9. Good point OHM, black nylon flats sound most acoustic-y to my ears, more so than regular flats. Rotosound TruBass for example (listen to Come Together by Beatles and you'll get the low/mid warm sound these produce)
10. Acoustic basses are generally a bit rubbish amplified unless you get a high-end one with a sophisticated preamp (my Takamine is the dogs but cost me a pretty penny). I would have thought some flats on your Precision would be an acceptable low-cost approach, along with careful EQing (mainly cut highs). Fretless would add a bit of buzz/mwah type action but I don't see that as Jetsonic stylee.
11. Thomann does Spiros for £116 but point taken on Evahs
12. They've been working on them since about 2009, according to a quick google, so i guess there's a lot of developmental costs to cover. Still I think that price point could prove problematic, even though there's tons of us Danny fans around
13. Hey Nige, can't make it I'm afraid but hope its a blast!
14. Last gig of 2012 for us at the Green Note in Camden. Its an "intimate" venue but has a great atmosphere and is well known on the folk circuit. Six of us fitted on a teeny stage, helped by our drummer bringing a dramatically stripped down kit and me playing my Takamine acoustic bass, rather than the full-blown DB. Given the venue and its normal clientele we played our more acoustic-y/folk-y numbers and we got a great reception. Plus we actually got paid a decent amount for a change (which is nice). A very good way to sign off for this year
15. Contacted Bass Centre again today and they said they await the packaging 'any day' and that the RRP will be a fairly hefty £145
16.
Plus a special forum for gingers, of course.
Royal patronage would be good
17. Thursday night. Bit sad its our last one of 2012. But then, its 2013 soon and lots more gigs to come, yay! Including the fantastic Hootenanny in January and the Half Moon in March
18. Regarding Good Friday, I pointed it out to the friendly lady organiser, Bree, and she said: "Easter comes early next year! I hadn't noticed that, thanks for pointing it out. I guess it could go two ways, with some people happy to have the holiday already in place. Unfortunately it's the time we have allocated for the Bass School so we'll have to make the most of it!" I am pencilled in for this course
19. No takers for a custom one-of-a-kind Sansamp beater?
20. PS, I just spotted that March 29th is Good Friday. Don't know if that makes it easier or harder for folks to attend
21.
If Ped & Kiwi are not making a profit from running Basschat, then they bloody should be. That is not intended to be in any way humorous or sarcastic, I am being deadly serious. I like the idea of a future in which Basschat continues to exist, in much its current form, for a very long time. The best guarantee of that is if we can find a way to make this a more rewarding experience for them. I am constantly amazed at the number of posts right across this forum that assume that we all have a God-given right to enjoy Basschat for nowt. Single annual fee works best for me.
Couldn't have put it better, Jack PS, I virtually never visit the classifieds - compare and contrast that with my number of posts. I find its like a separate website and to me thats a bit sad. S'why I say single annual fee
22. Or indeed a useful prop for Jake the Peg
23. He's also back to his 'microbe of relief'
24. Being owned by me devalues a bass
