  1. That's great Tom. I'm sure you've thought about it, but would be brilliant to engineer a situation where you could say 'I played with Paul Jones'. I believe he only has two more Mondays before he retires from his BBC blues show.
  2. This is interesting one. I'm currently working with a singer-songwriter on recording an album of his original songs. By default I've taken on the responsibility of noting down arrangements as we work through them. My little cheap offering as been christened by the band as the "notebook of doom". It's tough sometimes to say no, we did it like this last time. But sometimes I have to go with a better idea that comes later on. Assertiveness vs. Compromise. As the song said; sometimes you hold 'em, sometimes you fold 'em.
  3. One thing to consider is the neck. A lot of the factory-made PJs seem to have neck profile in a jazz style rather than a precision style. For example, the Fender Precision Delux models. That might not be what you want.
  4. Ok Blue, I'll start us off. About 10 years ago a duo I was playing in had a Sunday evening gig at a pub venue. The pub has long had a reputation for music and the whole town is in a very popular biker destination. When we arrived there were people milling around outside the door. The whole building was dark and shut down. We were told that the landlord had 'done a runner' with the takings from a busy Friday and Saturday. We stood around not knowing quite what to do when one of the frustrated customers said 'I'm a warden for the church next door, I'll have to call the vicar, but if he says ok will you play there?'. He said yes, so we did. A bit weird, not everyone came in, we made no money but lots of friends.
  5. I've got a Roland Cube 100w. It's served me very well in that kind of situation for years. If you're near Derby you're very welcome to come and give it a try.
  6. Superb, as always, Andy. See you tomorrow at the pub. 👍
  7. A flask of tea and a corned beef sandwich these days.
  8. What a fortunate lady Jane is. In my family you might get a new jumper commissioned; if you're lucky.
  9. I've got a couple of double bags. A Ritter and a Gator. If you're around Derby you're very welcome to come and have a look.
  10. I'd echo all the positive things said so far. There's no need to stop if you've still got the itch that needs to be scratched. I've just started a new band project at the age of 59. It's a recording-only band at the moment but busy and great fun. I did have to make the effort to go to a local pub's jam night at talk to people though! Not everyone is comfy with that I know. Where you live probably makes a difference too. I'm in the East Mids M1 corridor. Loads of towns, villages, big cities nearby and (relatively) good transport links. Don't give up! Good luck.
  11. I'd love to do that (once at least). The opportunity hasn't come up yet, but I'm only 59. ☺
  12. If you want to buy new and have a budget I can recommend looking at yamahas. I've been very happy with my TRB5
  13. Personally, I reckon thinking in these terms just opens the door to a musical career of anxiety and micro-stress. I just accept that I can be better, always will be, and I'm working on it! To the OP, I've been through the redundancy programme scene twice. In two different careers. My experience is that who goes and who stays doesn't seem to have much to do with ability at the job.
  14. This is a very interesting case and could set an important precedent. If the courts find in favour of the family the implications for promoters of live music could be massive.
  15. Well, they might do now. But I think we can be certain that many times in their earlier career the outcome would have been different.
  16. I was in a similar position with a guitar combo I wasn't using. I gave it to a nearby pub who run a regular open mic that is particularly welcoming to newbies.
  17. It's looking beautiful Andy. I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing it 'in action'. 😄
  18. Lots of you who are in the big cities sound like you can manage to gig without a car. Good luck to you, how many of us would put up with the drag of car ownership unless we had to? It seems that if you're living and/or gigging out in the 'provinces' it's almost a non-starter. I've seriously attempted to do gigs using buses or trains but I'm usually stuffed because the last one home is 11.00pm at the latest. Of course, that's only gigs where I'm not responsible for some PA or lights anyway.
  19. I saw the Eric Bell band at The Flowerpot in Derby very soon after NR died. Eric dedicated a song to him and made a little speech. He obviously had real affection and respect for the guy.
  20. Many's the time I've thought my sound was pants but people in the audience have said it was fine, or even good! So, I've become very cautious about judging how things sound 'out there' when I'm right on top of my rig. My suggestion is to get one or more person you trust and get them to give you an opinion about how you sound from the audience.
  21. In Different Every Time, the biography of Robert Wyatt, he talks about the time Soft Machine toured America with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He says some interesting things in general about Hendrix and is complementary about Redding's role in keeping everything together during performances.
