1.
I'm starting to think a little in the same way. Will be ordering a new 2008 American Standard this summer (when I get my bonus!!!) I've had plenty of jazzes & none have really fitted into my collection, so time to try a precision now
I played jazzes for years only because I never had a P-Bass. Now I have one, me and my band mates agree, it beats jazzes and Stingrays head over heals. Phat phat phat. I still love the versitility of the jazz and Stingray, but the way a P sits in the mix. Joy.
2. Some use either hard fishing pole cases, or, rifle cases.
3.
Maybe talk to DHA (Dave Hall) and see if one of his pedals might help?
+1. He makes a Bob the Blender which is a tube driven effects loop. This might work for you.
4. Innovation make some nylon coated strings specifically for Rockabilly.
5.
BTW it's possible to get a DB in a mini. Jake
For what it's worth, you can get a 3/4 UDB in a Yaris.
6. This forum has become rather large and IMO has lost the original feel. It used to be the majority of posts where about basses and gear etc... now it seems more about selling stuff. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't really visit here as much as I used to. Maybe we should pack in all the sales and get the forum back to what it's called...Bass Chat.
7. Bump for both Rhino and Dynacord. He sold me a very lovely Dynacord all tube bass amp last year and it is fantastic. Rhino is a great chap as well. Buy with confidence in both.
8. If Chris don't want it, I'll drive up tomorrow at lunch and have it. Keep us posted. Cheers
9. There's the David Gage Czech-Ease Also, the Rossco both pricey. Others probably out there.
10. Welcome to the world of upright. It's a beautiful thing. There are some very useful threads over on TB in the Double bass section. One I found very interesting is about playing up and down the strings instead of across them. I've been applying this and it helps with both strength and intonation. Have fun
11. Just wanted to add a bit. I bought a DB for £425 that is believed to be Czech made. I thought it was all ply but after closer investigation it has a carved top and some sort of hardwood fingerboard, possibly ebony but probably rosewood. I took it to Jan at Chapel Allerton Stringed Instruments in Leeds and he has transformed it. A new hefty bridge, new Innovation Honey strings, new ebony tail piece with a Sure-lok tail wire, sound post reset and a nut reshape and bingo. The action is still high and this gives a really warm, woody tone, not bright and clacky that you sometimes get with Spiros and low action. The bill was nearly the same as the cost of the bass but it all still comes in under £800. Result if you ask me. I would recommend Jan to anyone in the Leeds and surrounding area for any instrument repair and advice. Great chap and very helpful. Just more evidence that you can get into double bass and get a decent tone for not a lot of dosh.
12. I only ever had one bass, my jazz from the early 80's to the mid 90's. I think you learn to get by if it's all you have. Simple experiment...sell everything but one axe and one amp and see how you get on
13. Hi and welcome from Wakefield Cheers
14. This might sound daft but when I built my Warmoth 5 string jazz, I only did one coat of pure tung oil on the neck and body, rubbed it down with 0000 steel wool and then rubbed some Warwick wax into it. That was 2001. Haven't done anything to it since and still going strong. Point being, I never thought so little could go so far.
15. Maybe Wizard pickups can make you something like the Neo pickup
16.
I take the position that if someone's paying you hard earned cash to put on a gig of 'x' length, then that's what I should do. I don't want to be the one to mess up someone's wedding reception. It may be the only one they ever have! Thanks again
Quite right. If it makes you feel better, bring a back up. It's saved me a couple of times. I'd rather do without the embarrassment of not being able to fulfill my part in the band. 4 or 5 is up to you. I carry a Hohner B4A for backup... it's small and has a decent enough sound to get me through a gig.
17. hmmmm...I was getting ready to build a couple of O12 Tops and T38's. This would save me alot of time and effort, and your not far away. Welcome to BC by the way David Cheers
18. Hi and welcome. Enjoy the site. Cheers
19. Hi and welcome from a fellow Yorkshireman. Where are you located? There are quite a few of us scattered amongst the White Rose. I'm in Wakefield and work in Shipley. Cheers,
20. Bump for a gucci amp. I've got the older 600 w 1 channel model and it's superb. Not sterile or thin sounding even though it's SS. Set flat all the time...I don't even use the filters. Cracking amps
21. Same here. I use a Sadowsky outboard pre with just the bass turned up ever so slightly through an Acoustic Image Focus II set flat. Let the bass speak for itself.
22. Hi and welcome. Hope you enjoy the site. Lots of great things happening. Cheers,
