Try the Warwick Rockbass series, too. Have you any friends who can play? They may be able to help you try some out and give you er......pointers.

Not an issue I've ever encountered, but mine get stored/transported in a variety of containers, so no one bass stays in a particular case for very long. At a slight tangent, does anyone know what the short webbing strap at the very top of Warwick gig bags is for? (it's approximately behind the headstock..) It seems over-engineered for a simple bag hanger...

In one televised appearance, I saw one of the furry critters wielding a six-string Ken Smith. The drummer had a full-on DW kit. Don't reckon they found either of those on the local tip...

DR, though I do also use Elixir, Status and Overwater. I try to find which strings work best for me with which bass and use accordingly, rather than being particularly loyal to one brand. Elixirs are great on the Warwicks, but sound "quacky" on instruments with phenolic fretboards.

"Babooshka" and "Army Dreamers" for me. (Both on "Never Forever") Definitely Giblin on bass for the former.

I usually seem to get what I'm looking for (slight upper-mid boost) from slightly favouring the bridge pick-up. Changing hand position/technique alters the sound a lot too. Best basses I've encountered for mid-tinkering: Ibanez EDB 600 - Just a straight 3band, but the mid frequency was just right for me Vigier Passion s3 - Quasi Parametric Eq - like a giant mid sweep. Nails the sweet spot, but the boost is too much @ 15dB Bongo - The 4-band is great IMO. Anything with a mid frequency sweep and level control ought to do it, though. Especially if it has adjustable Bass/Treble frequency points. Can't stand the Ultra-high/lo or pre-shapes on amps. Too inflexible.

From your OP, it implies that the output in passive mode is alright. If this is the case, the pickups are probably ok. That leaves the pre amp as the likely culprit. The cavity in these basses is hardly large, so a non-original pre amp might not fit. On the up side, the original unit is very basic, so a repair or replacement ought not to to be too expensive...
