What bass does Robert Trujillo play in this video? a 4-string Jazz?
Lfalex v1.1 replied to fred8816's topic in Bass Guitars
But that's only the first vid. The second (didn't watch it all) has Fernandes (Jazz, not Gravity) & Warwick basses for the most part. -

Looks like a Fender Jazz with the "Fender" decal scrubbed off/out (doubtless due to endorsement issues with the big "W") Note that it still has the other Jazz decal on the "lobe" of the headstock.. I can't remember what the wording would be, though. Sure someone'll be along soon to tell us what year it might be. Is it me or do the other 75% of Metallica look a bit tired these days by comparison? -
I'm busy. I take the kids to school every day. I look after them 3 nights a week. I work 40 hours in the other 4 days. Bands are simply not an option, but I still get plenty of practice. Can't sleep? Get up. Play bass! Watching tv? Stop. Play bass! Idly surfing... Oh, you get the idea! Anything more than 30 spare minutes can accommodate a practice. I use headphones , btw.
One advantage of these EERB things is that if you're playing a cruise gig and the ship sinks you can just climb on top of that and wave the rescue helicopters down to land on it
Fixed that for you!

is it possible to play drums and bass well...?
Lfalex v1.1 replied to lowdowner's topic in General Discussion
I found it really frustrating. As much of my bass playing style hinges upon rhythm and timing/delivery, I found that my lack of ability on drums clashed very badly with my sense of rhythm. That and a lack of practise space scuppered my attempts. I had an electric kit, but even that occupied too much space, and the neighbours hated the noise the kick pedal/pad made, even with the solid concrete floors downstairs... -
My old fretless Columbus Jazz had a rosewood board. Round wound strings murdered it. However... My Stingray 5 fretless had a Pau Ferro board, and that held up just fine with rounds on. Ebony is harder still, so you should be ok with rounds. Nickel ought to be more forgiving than Steel, just like it is on fretted instruments.

Are that many of the above underrated? Anyway, I was listening to some Jane's Addiction today, and was liking the way that the bassist, Dave Navarro and Stephen Perkins all manage to give each other space... all at the same time. So here's a mention for Eric Avery (in case I forgot him earlier!)

I've always found it ironic that someone whose initials are "J/J" is most famous for playing a "P"...

Aren't they owned by Fender these days?!
My understanding of the OP is that the whole bass is detuned a semitone so that would be 4 new detunerEes. I think I'd rather just take a second bass as a backup that could be detuned in advance. In fact come to think of it I'm sure I've done gigs where I did precisely that.
Or tune it down a semi tone on every string and capo it at the first for regular tuning. Cheaper than a second bass OR de-tuners....

A brilliant digital bass made from an old C64 computer !!
Lfalex v1.1 replied to daz's topic in Bass Guitars
Anyone for a Steinberger "replica" made from two Spectrums stuck back-to-back?! Edit for a PS: How do you get above A (14th fret, G string)? The C64 is kind of in the way! -
iPad on a stick plus a suitable app?
Would that be an 8, 10 or 12 string "stick"? Besides, you'd be using both hands and wouldn't be able to use the controller unless you licked it....

Gotta say, I don't like any of those posted above For some reason, it's just not cool when EBMM do "funny stuff". I like the original iterations of the 'Ray (2 or 3 eq), 'Ray 5, Sterling and even the Bongo (4/5 HS and HH). But all this Reflux and Toasted Neck and Big Al stuff just misses the mark somehow. Don't really get all the HS and HH and "classic" versions of basses that were better just the way they were. Strangely, it seems entirely appropriate for Warwick to do what ever the hell they want to any bass they want, and it just seems ok. Like I said, I can't explain it!!

I like. But it needs a matching headstock (ie; white, not lefty!)
For playing bass,Powerballs,Gripmasters and the like are not going to help. You don't need strong hands or wrists to play bass. For every minute you spend playing with one of them is a minute that would be better spent playing your instrument, which would be more beneficial to your playing.
Amen. My day job is very physical. I do not want for strength in my hands at all. In fact, I struggle to achieve the required speed/deftness/lightness of touch in my right (dominant) hand. No issues with my fretting hand, mind.

Keep it simple. Find a dealer/shop with plenty of basses you might like, and perhaps some you've never heard of. Some less than your budget, some within and some beyond. Play them ALL. Buy the one you liked the most, or at least work out if you can afford it and feel it's worth the (extra?) money.

FWIW my sweat makes brass/copper and "gold" hardware turn green. Phosphor Bronze strings turn black when exposed to my perspiration... Zero frets are the way to go, although they're not exactly the same as they're often hardened to offset the increased wear that they experience. This is caused by the fact that the strings are always pressed against it, whatever note you're fretting.
I meant clean as in un coloured. Couple of options / thoughts have come up - either a super clean head, or get myself a decent power amp and experiment with Pre-Amps to taste.
This. Or, better still, have an A/B switch between preamps/power amp.. Then you can have a coloured/uncoloured/dirty set-up. Just insert a DI box before the power amp if a DI feed for the desk is needed...

Um.. Yes. Back on topic! I had a SD MMHB in my Iceni Zoot. That didn't rust/corrode at all. SOME polepieces seem to be machined rather than ground. Some of mine have borne concentric milling marks. I wonder, do some manufacturers coat/seal their polepieces to prevent corrosion? If not, why not?
