1. Many Happy ASATs!
2.
^ This. Warwicks with MEC pups have what I would call the classic 'Warwick Sound'. A bit of growl but still quite round. If you associate colour with sound as I do then Warwicks sound blue..............
Seriously? My Fortress MM5 (strung with Elixirs at the mo') is the sonic equivalent of staring at the Sun (if you play it hard) The only thing holding it back is the 9v electrics. 18v (without any extra gain) would be shocking.....
3. Didn't one of Novoselic's basses get him back at some point? I'm sure one KO'd him when he tried to abuse it. Smashing instruments is for utter F***tards. Wanna be cool? Donate it to a school or give it to someone that wants to learn. That is cool.
4.
Cant remember the details, but theres some regulation about the length of mains cable supplied with electrical equipment not being more than 1.5 Metres as its a trip hazard.
It goes something like: "Look, there's plenty enough trip hazards on the stage as it is. Pedal boards, Kick drum mics, instrument cables, monitors, singers. Why should we (the manufacturer) bear the cost of supplying you with a longer mains cable just so you can reach the plug socket behind the bar...."
5.
There is a magazine for bass players?????????
No. There are magazines for bass players... And a couple of good intyweb forums, too.
6. A Dolphin or Infinity are better balanced, and can get fairly close to the Thumb tone...
7. I have 3. And they're all completely different! Considered as a whole (including discontinued models) the range ably demonstrates the established hierarchy of contributory factors to an instrument's tone: (technique) (strings) Pickups/placement Eq/electrics Materials Construction They Do have a family sound of sorts, and I reckon that's down to the MEC pickups and eq (and the fact that no-one else uses them)
8. Hmmm. Much as I (quite) like the Anthrax version of "Got the time", the original is much, much better. Think the Bello solo is good? Graham Maby's playing on the original is simply phenomenal
9.
This one? It's only the prestige model with the neck pickup I normally like Ibanez stuff, but this is just dull. For a Prestige model it looks really cheap.
I quite like it, but the clear scratchplate would have to go.
10.
Remember reading some article where he said he hated using effects pedals and liked a simple p bass -> amp -> cab sound. Hope that's of help
When I saw them live (first album tour, mind you) he was just using p-bass > SVT (II?) > Ampeg 8x10
11. As for price, the s1 are kind of clunky looking and not very trendy.also, they're oldest, and may have mojo/damage and are likely cheapest. The s2 are nothing short of awesome... But not easy to come by, therefore more expensive. s3 are a different kind of awesome. More woody and slightly warmer sounding than s2. Also costly, though more numerous than s2. s4 are expensive new. Haven't seen any s/h! If money is no object, you can choose your preference from neck thru or bolt-on, more graphite or less....
12. (I own a Passion 5 s3) Main differences; Pick up placement and (some series) eq systems. They're all pretty damn good for construction/tone/playability. The passion has its pick ups approximately where a warwick thumb with two close mounted units would. The Arpege is more like a jazz. Afaik the pick ups are the same in any two arpege/passion from the same era. The pick ups (almost always benedetti) have changed over time. Eq: can't speak for series 1, but 2 & 3 passions had a quasi parametric equal, whilst the arpege had a rotary (9 position?) selector. S 4 are the current ones. I know the passion has one eq per pick up, BMT, methinks. The Arpege may well have the same. Glockenlang sounds right to me. The series 1,2&3 of both are neck thru. s4 are bolt on. s1 have a sliver of metal beneath the fretboard. s2 are graphite neck thru. S3 are wooden neck thru with the 10/90 graphite/wood mix. S4 are 10/90 bolt on. That's a quick potted history done on my phone! In general, there seem to be more passions than arpeges....
13. GUESS- The switch is for mid frequency (if it's 3 band, or a mid-cut if it's 2!) The adjuster will likely be for overall output level, especially if it runs in passive mode, then it'll be for level matching between the two modes?
14. ^ This. Or the ' 75 RI....
15.
To be fair what parts of musical terminology aren't? Flat, sharp, Phrygian, all weird.
And the rest is all in Italian anyway...
16. ^ What he said, but without the love of pointiness or hair metal... Yamaha, Cort, Ibanez, Squier (also) Mostly all made in the same manufacturing facilities, too. Try the Warwick Rockbass series, too. Have you any friends who can play? They may be able to help you try some out and give you er......pointers.
17.
Sorry, don't do facebook or twitter.
Nor I. Can't stand any kind of social networking.... Apart from this place, but that's much more "uni-directional"...
18.
Ridiculous name too, imagine limiting an instrument to one genre...
Does that mean it'll be no good for metal, then?
19. First, foremost and only a bassist... However, my daughter is starting to learn guitar, and I'm finding some skills are quite transferable in both directions... Not to mention keyboards/ piano
20. They can be incisive or deep and meaningful, famous/published or your own originals. Quote your sources and no plagiarism after the fact please! I'll start with: "What do you mean I'm not kind? Just not your kind." (Dave Mustaine, Megadeth) "It doesn't matter what you say.... ' cos they'll always find some meaning in it anyway." (Henry Rollins, The Rollins Band)
21.
Really...?? I wouldn't describe Steve Harris as a touch player..?? also appears agrressive and heavy to me..
I thought he was well-known as a "tickler"... I find there's a change in tone depending on how hard you attack the strings, but beyond that, if you pluck too hard, it begins to limit your speed. Your hands may vary...
22.
No that's slightly facetious. But continuing the analogy, when we are speaking about the musical response of pots you might as well be saying to your tyre guy "don't get the air for your tyres here, it's free. The garage round the corner charges 20p air... it's bound to be better".
Because it's actually £1 per wheel and is oxygen-free to help prevent the inside of the carcass from oxidising, thereby impairing durability and performance? Seriously, though, consider other uses of audio components. Expensive bits of hifi amps? Volume pots, transformers and "power" capacitors. I bet serious mixing desk s don't compromise on the quality of their faders...
23. Not an issue I've ever encountered, but mine get stored/transported in a variety of containers, so no one bass stays in a particular case for very long. At a slight tangent, does anyone know what the short webbing strap at the very top of Warwick gig bags is for? (it's approximately behind the headstock..) It seems over-engineered for a simple bag hanger...
24. In one televised appearance, I saw one of the furry critters wielding a six-string Ken Smith. The drummer had a full-on DW kit. Don't reckon they found either of those on the local tip...
25. DR, though I do also use Elixir, Status and Overwater. I try to find which strings work best for me with which bass and use accordingly, rather than being particularly loyal to one brand. Elixirs are great on the Warwicks, but sound "quacky" on instruments with phenolic fretboards.
