Just been listening to 1996 re-master of Deep Purple's album Fireball, and inside are 3 pics of Roger Glover toting a Mustang. Here's one: Took mine out on a blues gig on Saturday and it worked really well, especially as stage room was very limited!

I think anything that broadens your musicianship is going to be good for your playing.

When I was in the market for a serious bass amp (2000, give or take) I tried a Trace 2x10 combo, probably with a 7-band graphic. I could not get rid of the over-bright sound, or dial in any warmth. Went to the next shop and tried an Ashdown ABM500 2x10 combo, and there it was. I ended up buying the 1x15 version, and gigged that for at least 10 years. (I didn't become dissatisfied with the Ashdown until I bought a TC450 head pretty much on a whim, and realised how much the Ashdown had been masking the funky mids that I could suddenly hear.)

I play bass in a country band (mix of trad and modern) and I use a P with flats (occasionally a Mustang), but that's just my preference. As others have said, the way you accompany the song is much more important.

Although I can play with a pick (I migrated from guitar), I now hardly ever do. Even the songs that I used to think needed a pick, either for the sound or the speed, I now play finger style. So enjoy playing your way, and if some day you are drawn to the plectrum, give it another go then.

[/quote] Exactly what I do, although my choice of outboard digital amp simulator is the Zoom MS-50G. There's only me in my home studio, so if I don't like the guitar sound in the mix I can just do another take myself!

I enjoyed that. As far as as tackling the Stick myself, I filed that under Too Difficult a long time ago. I still need to crack Travis picking!

Stop worrying about sounding like the record, as probably none of us ever will. Compare: 1. The Record - Multiple takes, very likely 'comped' (the best bits spliced together) - Loads of studio production - Played by someone else, in their style 2. Your live performance - A one-off - No studio production - Played by you, in your style And yes, reggae has a feel that is difficult to get. I think you have to do it a lot really.

I have a run of 10 or so dep gigs with a covers band. The second was this afternoon at Much Marcle Steam Rally. Fortunately the PA was provided, but the lorry-mounted stage was as wet as a wet thing so they moved the PA to the beer tent. Jobsworths on the gate stopped us getting vehicles right up to the marquee, but we managed to find spaces in the car park fairly close to the pedestrian entrance next to it and handballed all our kit in. Of course there was no stage in the beer tent. Somebody found a piece of plywood big enough to fit the drumkit on, and I had taken the precaution of bringing a small wooden board to put my rig on and keep it off the grass. After all this we had a slightly late start, and played an excellent and very satisfying set. My 63 RI Precision via Demeter/Barefaced rig sounded epic - everything from Bob Marley to Simply Red to AC/DC at the turn of a tone knob. Also the view to my left consisted of several traction engines - the smell was glorious! Here's the only pic I've been able to find. Sadly, my face is obscured...
