Auditioned for a guitarist and it's too close to call
NoRhino replied to NoRhino's topic in General Discussion
I knew you'd provide some good, and funny, suggestions. It is indeed a nice problem to have especially when actual live work is still a long time off allowing the luxury of not rushing. I'll share your wisdom with the band tonight and get their opinions now that they've had a few days to mull it over. I'm leaning towards a full studio rehearsal with both guys separately. That will answer so many questions. -
Possibly Folsom Prison Blues or similar. My older brother was a good Country guitar player and introduced me to the discipline of 2/4 time.

Fortunately they are both clean and inoffensive to the snout. -
We auditioned two candidates for a guitarist role. Both turned up in time for their allocated slot. We'd asked them to prep the same three songs. Candidate 1 used the studio amp and brought his guitars and fx. We know what his own amp is and have no concerns there. He was very nervous even though two of us know him quite well. He was shaking like a leaf and played everything accurately, in time and up to speed. We played through the same songs again. Body language would suggest he will bring something visually to the stage if the nerves settle. Near the end of his time we asked him if he wanted to play something of his choice but he said he was too nervous and would just leave us to see the next guy. Candidate 2 brought his own amp and fx. We followed the same audition process. No outward indication of nerves and he also played very well. This was our first time meeting him. Footered a bit between songs continually adjusting settings but obviously knows the material. He did take the option of an extra song which he played well too. One of the existing band members does wonder what #2 will bring visually. The existing band is having a group call soon to discuss next steps and try to decide who'll be the best man for us. As usual I welcome BC's wise advice and suggestions. Thanks

I'm in late July and early August with both bands. The August date is an audition with two candidates. I spoke with the studio and it all sounds well managed. I'm looking forward to getting back to rehearsing again.

You beat me to it. I never tire of listening to this album. A great example of when to support the song and when to drive it along.

Hi Dave. A long term condition affecting tendons in his fretting hand has forced him reluctantly to retire.

Saturday at The Ferry in Glasgow. 300+ punters up for a good night out. It was our rhythm guitarist's last show after ten years sterling service. The search is on for a new NoParfitt.

Mark Griffiths bass performance is immense.

Almost tempted to buy one of these but the tuners put me off. I tried one in a shop and there's just something about the build material that I'm not keen on. Do you own one? Do you use it regularly to gig with? Do you recommend one? My main basses are P + J so this isn't a direct replacement. I'm considering using it for acoustic type shows where space is limited and loud volume frowned upon. Thanks

I'm learning Nathan East's lines on Clapton's version of Hot Tamales. 15 minutes a day is paying off and it's ready for January's first rehearsal. Wish me luck.

I think the original drummer served time.

Alan Longmuir always played a right hand bass upside down. Must have saved a fortune on buying lefty versions.

Correct.

Dolly's version makes me fill up. Whitney's version makes me switch it off.

Who influenced you to pick up and start playing Bass.

Jim Lea, Larry Taylor, Jack Bruce and Marshall Grant. -
I once heard it called "Jumped up Karaoke" Brilliant. If you play an instrument and sing to files that's different. IMO.

Like @Stofferson I had to do this for gigs in a Greene King pub. I was paid promptly enough but your follow band members need to know that won't be paid on the night.

Five years ago on this very forum I discovered Professor Elemental. Finally got to see him at Edinburgh. Great fun.

Lack of everything. We didn't provide the PA. We did discuss it amongst ourselves afterwards and decided that if we do an acoustic set again we need to be in total control of the PA and do a full soundcheck. You'd have thought that 40+ years of gigging would have told us that anyway. People in the audience said we sounded good and they could hear everything. I also managed to bruise the inside of my forearm where it rubbed against the bass body. Mibbe acoustic basses and I just aren't meant to be. GAS is still at a peep.

I borrowed a Fender from a friend two weeks before an acoustic gig to get used to playing it. Sounded ok at home while definitely different to my usual P bass. On the night of the gig though I found it to be a pretty disappointing experience. Admittedly the monitoring was poor and while I could hear both acoustic guitars and small drum kit the bass was totally lost and I played every song from memory without hearing anything. It did kill any GAS I had for an acoustic bass and I'd rather use something like a Horner Shorty properly amplified were we to do the acoustic show again.

Was that me last week?
