Oh totally - wouldn't it be boring if we were all the same! Weight isn't a massive concern at the minute. But it would be weird to have an amp that weighs more than your cabs. As in weighs more than 2 retro 2x10s - only weight I can find for the ABM900 online is 28kg... the retros weigh 13kg! Horses for courses and all that!
Ha ha, I'm genuinely not a salesman for Carvin - but..... One more point I thought of is that I regularly gig with one cab on its side with the Carvin on top, if the room is boomy or I need it a bit closer to my ears. It is a nice fit - but I image a ABM900 or similar would look silly (and possibly dangerous) in that config. Ok - that's it now - I'll stop banging on about it now
I remember our Barefaced chats! I would doubt I'd go for the Carvin I'm afraid. It may be on a level with anything else out there, but it's a case of better the devil you know. If I could get an Orange TB500/1000 or Ashdown ABM900 for the same (or less) money previous experience tells me I'd be happy with them, so the Carvin wouldn't get a look in!
Each to their own - the only thing I would say in defence of the Carvin is that I've tried to lift a ABM900 and the Carvin is a feather in comparison. I imagine the Orange stuff is heavy too. I was going for compact and light (due to back problems) which is what sent me down that route. There doesn't seem to be many on BC that use Carvin amps (a very generalised sweeping comment based on my limited reading here), but I'm very happy with mine! EDIT: Good luck in your search - I'd be interested to hear what you do go for in the end.
http://www.carvinaud.../products/b1000 HugeHands from these shores runs this amp with two Retro Two10s and it sounds delightful. I think Bass Gear have them or at least can get them and they are right around your budget Edit - HH also went from an Ashdown Little Giant 1000 to this if that has any bearing
Hi Bigwan, I remember we had chats about delivery times when we got our cabs! I used to run mine one per channel on my Ashdown LG1000. As they were obsolete, I was looking for another one second hand as a backup but couldn't find one. Merton and Eude of this parish pointed me to the Carvin and I couldn't be happier. I think it was a bit closer to £600 with delivery EDIT: I've just checked and it was £500 with delivery! It has a little switch on the back for selecting 2 or 4 ohm modes if you're like me and sometimes only use one cab. It is worth noting that Molan from Bass Gear told me they were giving up Carvin distribution when I bought mine, so not sure who is doing it in the UK now.

I bought my V7 5 string in black, second hand from BC after seeing my old friend chardbass raving about his. I am really happy with mine. It's funny how everyone goes on about the tuners - they do seem a bit cheap, but I've noticed mine can spend a week in a gig bag and barely need a tune - so there must be something fairly sturdy about them! I stuck a set of flats on mine and have never been happier. The knobs took a little while to commit to memory, but all good now! To answer Woodinblack's question - I think the string spacing is slightly narrower than some, so the neck does not feel like a cricket bat like my old Squier P5s. I thought this would be a problem for me as I like the wide spacing for my fat fingers, but I have to say I haven't really noticed too much of a difference.

Usually, NTSC discs don't work on Region 2 only players. However, some players are all regions (usually laptop drives are in my experience) or some have the ability to be "unlocked" to all regions if you search for what the secret button press is on the remote. So I've heard, I'm not sure you're really supposed to do it of course ;-)

Hi Martin, Nice to see your new rig! We'll have to have another "mini bash" soon and try out some more gear - hopefully with no horses running around on the M23 this time!
I wish they'd do a passive only version - I don't use the preamp, and have no plans to!
The passive/active is switchable, and I was having to play mine with dead batteries in it halfway through a rehearsal the other week, so it should run in passive only mode without batteries? The volume, tone and pickup blend still work in passive mode. I'm very happy with mine (V7 5 string).

Our band played Troy bar last year. We do blues/soul and were a little bit off their norm, but it is a great little venue and we went down well with the crowd that was there. Eddie who runs the place is a real nice guy too.

Essential Soul music from Raphael Saadiq.
Huge Hands replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
I love Raphael's stuff, including his bass playing. As an alternative, if you search "Rapahel Saadiq live" on Youtube, there is a gig from the North Sea Jazz festival in 2011. The track on the OP's link is at around 9mins 30, but RS is not playing bass on that, only singing. I prefer that version - and the keyboard player gets to go mad on that one too! -
Some very helpful Basschatters on here pointed me in the direction of my Carvin B1000 when I needed the same to run my two 4 ohm Barefaced Retro 210s. EDIT: And it's light too.... I am very happy with it.

Weird, I have met Mr Baxter through a mutual friend of ours - he depped on a gig for me about 5 years ago, although I didn't meet him then. I was later introduced to him at a christening and he seemed like a nice chap. I was told he bought and sold a few basses, but I didn't realise he was into it this much! I might have to wiggle my eyelids at him to see if he will let a pauper and timewaster into his hallowed den, even if just to stand in the corner and breathe in the air.....

I also went for the Bassbone V2 after I found I needed gain control between the two inputs which my Bright Onion (see earlier post in this thread) didn't have. I've only used it a couple of times so far and it seems to be everything I will ever need. The 15A PSU was a pain though - had to add a 13A socket to my pedalboard.

I have ordered quite a few things from Thomann. Always seems to be DHL through Germany, then Parcelforce at the UK end. If you create an account with Thomann and follow their tracker - I always find the bit that determines the length of time you wait is the "at Import Centre" part or whatever it is - I assume Customs in the UK. Last year I ordered stuff around Christmas and both Thoman's pickers and the Import Centre were slow. I don't really know how Parcelforce works, but I find that un-delivered packages arranged through them in the UK go back to their main depot which is only open 8-5. However the Thoman stuff always ends up getting dropped at my local Post Office which is actually a newsagents. It's only round the corner and open at 6am - great for picking stuff up before work!

Another hero of mine gone today (first Lemmy, Pavel Srnicek - former Newcastle goakeeper and now John). A sad, sad day. What a fantastic drummer he was - loved watching him on the reunion gig footage from a couple of years ago - still dead tight.

Have just purchased Ben's Sire V7 5 String. Was a pleasure to deal with, appreciated even more as he was dealing with family emergencies at the time. Loving the bass too! Was really well packed, and came when and as described. Would happily recommend to others!
Maybe a stupid question, but, does it stand up on it`s own when empty? I have a Warwick bag, and it is so flimsy and difficult to put a bass in compared to the other case I have.
I find mine do. It's not rock solid stiff, but doesn't bend in the middle and flop over like a really cheap one. If you were to fill the headstock pocket with a load of stuff it might be a different story though - I just have a lightweight tuner and a pencil in mine!

I have 2 for my main basses. When one arrived, there was a fault with one of them and its zip - Thomann sent me out a free replacement very quickly with no quibbling. I still have the faulty one and is useable as a bag for the car, if you're careful. I regularly travel on the train up to London with mine and find the "backpack" shoulder straps very comfortable indeed. I have seen some much better quality/more protective bags, but not for this low price. Very happy with mine.
Changing the action won't change the curve of the bridge and the space between the strings, so I don't think it would make a big difference in fact.
^^ This is what I found when I messed with mine. Thanks for the tips - I shall look into this!

Recording band rehearsals with a portable recorder
Huge Hands replied to Wilco's topic in General Discussion
Our keyboard player has a Zoom H4n and records all rehearsals, gigs etc. I always find the sound to be pretty good and rounded - the bass sound is usually very good - and the balance is good - if the band are balanced in the first place! It has fallen off his keyboard a couple of times and has had one of its mics superglued back on, but it is still going strong. He did say that he uses his with batteries only to save messing about with a PSU but it eats batteries, which may be a consideration. -
Oh! That made something happen in my pants. At the front, this time.
You have just won the internet. I need a new keyboard.....

Wow, just wow. I have the exact same bass and would love to add bowing to my repertoire but as yet - it is still beyond me. One question - when I got mine the action was really low and close to the neck, which I would enjoy with a guitar, but seemed too low when I tried with a bow as I was hitting all strings at once. Did you find this, or is it just my shoddy technique? It's hard to see in the video what the action is like on yours.

Most buildings/venues normally want two documents - a Method Statement, and a Risk Assessment, although they can be combined. The method statement is a detailed statement of what you are going to do - i.e. wheel flight cases into venue, unpack equipment, set up and use. A risk assessment is listing the likely dangers/risks that your method statement would bring up and what you would do to minimise the risk. For example, you method statement may include "Use ladders to hang lighting and banners". Your Risk Assesment would then need to recognise that working at heights is a risk, and you would need to list the control measures you would use (such as rope barriers, no lone working etc). Can be quite lengthy if you've not done one before, but once the first one is done, they become a bit of a cut and paste exercise to suit specific situations. Please note I'm speaking as someone who deals with them in my job, not having done one for a band. I am no expert in this subject by the way!

Welcome to the world of EUB! Enjoy the broad spectrum of mixed reactions at gigs - all the way from those that just have to tell you it is "not as good as a real one" and those that think it's great. I especially like the ones who don't notice, and then get all uppity about it not being real once they have been told! I think it is hilarious! Enjoy! Whether you feel guilty about people making you feel like you're not being a true double bass player or not, they can still be a hoot to play!
Well I have a Retro210....
I know, that was my point! In my experience, the output (and likely impedance if your EUB has a piezo pickup) can be wildly different between the upright and a normal passive bass, so you may need to get used to dialling in totally different settings on your amp. I play gigs where I play both EUB and bass guitar, and have been experimenting with various A/B switchers with gain and EQ to try and match them up a bit better. EDIT: Not sure if different basses is relevant in your case, but thought it worth mentioning....
