1. I had TI Jazz flats on my EBMM USA SUB and liked them for a while.... until I bought a defretted SUB which came with LaBella 760FL's on. No major problems with the TIs - but I preferred the slightly higher tension of the LaBellas. Reminiscent of the difference in feel going between 50-105 Slinky and 45-100 Super Slinky.. Super Slinkies just don't feel right for me. Probably mostly down to my clumsy right hand technique, but as long as I can buy a way round it then I don't have to worry about fixing it, right?
  2. I use velcro type wraps, but ones like these - (link in case pic doesn't work) as they stay attached to one end of the cable and so saves ferreting around in the gig bag for loose ties or tape.
  3. Looks like is indeed a CS - and it's got yet another pickup on it now - https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Bass-Gallery/130263647053305?fref=nf#
  4. The tuners are about the only thing on my MIM Jazz that I wouldn't be bothered about changing! OK so they don't feel quite as "premium" as some, but they work perfectly well. They hold tuning fine, and it's never suffered with neck dive, so can't see a few grams weight saving would have a significant impact on anything...
  5.
Errrm no.
That'll learn me not to be posting on here at silly o'clock in the morning while slightly off my noggin on painkillers......<checks clock> Oh.... Apologies for any confusion caused by my brainfart!
  6.
you can also deal with phase issues by introducing delay to one side or the other.
But the phase difference will vary depending on where you are in the room, won't it? So adding delay to one side would just move the problems around the room a bit, wouldn't it?
  7. Consider my attention thoroughly grabbed. I'm currently using a GK MB500 into either/both of BFM Omni 10 and Omni 10.5. Have a Zoom B3 and MS-60B if I need some preamp type flavour but I generally run dry bass signal into the effects return of the amp and set the sound up from the bass preamp. Was looking into a Greenboy F112 and either a MB800 or Tecamp Puma 900 so I could avoid the need for 2 cabs for loud-ish gigs but this would be more cost effective AND reclaim the amp space in my gig bag..... Only downside I can see vs the F112 is losing the wedge option... but i've got one of those Markbass folding propstands so even that's not a big deal. Veeeeeerryyyyy tempting!
  8.
Howie, I'm talking tightening the neck to lower string hight at about 12th f but raising nut hight a smidge to accomadtate the fret buzzes I'll pick up from frets 5-1 (ish).... I'm thinking this way because the bridge has no adjustment it's like an acoustic guitar with a fixed plastic bridge saddle. Sure, I could put a shim under the bridge saddle but I figured that would raise string hight even more, I want the opposite... So my thinking is akin to working backward, flatten the neck and remove relief but accommodate with marginally higher nut at headstock end..... If you think I'm way way wrong in this approach please let me know.... I much prefer my baddass bridge
A taller nut will only make a difference to fretbuzz on open strings. As soon as you're fretting a note then the string height at the neck end is determined by the height of the frets, not the nut. Ideal nut height is so that the bottom of the nut slot is in a straight line with the tops of the first few frets - any higher than that and you're deflecting the string more than necessary, and making it harder to get intonation set up correctly. The only exception to this I can think of is if you're playing with a slide and want to be able to apply a bit of pressure to the top of the string without it interfering with the frets at all. I suppose the same would apply for using artificial harmonics. If you have fret buzz from 1-5 but not higher up the neck, then the conventional approach would be to raise the bridge and tighten the truss rod a little to straighten the neck to compensate for the extra string height higher up the neck. 2mm at the first fret is far more than I'd happy with... In fact - it could be contributing to the problem if you're not pressing hard enough to fret cleanly - an excessively tall nut will mean you need loads more pressure on the string to make solid contact with the fret. Here's a video of a guy explaining the same kind of stuff and a demo of how to fix it if you're into having a go yourself. He recommends about 5mm clearance at the first fret, which is more than I like, but still loads less than your 2mm! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cI9Y9MsmnEc HTH
  9.
I tried rotosound flats, they lasted one gig due to being such high tension. I also tried pyramid flats (as the band I'm in had is endorsed by them) they only lasted one gig as well. So I've stuck with La Bella's. Those our you that use TI's how is their tension compared to regular roundwounds? Are the similar or slightly tighter?
I went from Ernie Ball Regular Slinky 50-105 (mostly) & GHS Boomers 45-105 (occasionally) to TI Flats and found the TI's were noticably lower tension. Felt OK on the left hand, but moved around a bit more than I liked under my right. Then I bought a fretless bass which had a set of LaBella 760 FL(43/60/82/104) - and they seem more like the Regular Slinkies in terms of feel, so I've binned the TI's off the fretted and got another set of LaBellas for it...
  10. Is it possible that's the earlier MB2-500? I thought the MB500's all had the limiter switch on the top? Only asking as I bought an amp advertised on here as an MB500 which turned out to be an MB2-500 when it arrived. Wasn't an issue - it's a great amp and I'm still using it nearly 2 years later... just would have liked to have known beforehand!
  11. Boost bass and mids and turn the volume down?
  12.
Stoo - Mayer's sound is quintessentially Fender, and I believe he will still play them, but I half-expect a PRS endorsement and sig model before long.
Fair enough - I'm not familiar with the guy - just stumbled upon mention of the PRS thing while googling to find out who he was and figured it might be worth mentioning!
  13. Maybe more to this story than first seems - I also saw mention that he's now on the PRS artists list on their webpage - no idea if that's a new thing or not though http://prsguitars.com/artists/#artistlist
  14. I've got an LED on my EBMM SUB, but just the one, on the control plate, as a battery low warning indicator. That's not much help, is it?
  15.
Just a plain, black, bass-shaped design with quality materials that won't fall apart after 6 months. Is that too much to ask for???
Did you consider the other Protec one? http://www.thomann.de/gb/protec_deluxe_e_bass_gig_bag.htm I've had one for about 18 months and can't really fault it considering the price and 3 year warranty.... I mostly tend to use a protection racket 7051 now as the pockets are a bit bigger, and I can carry my amp head and zoom b3 and all the cables and whatnot all in the gig bag - but rarely have to carry it far.
  16. In: Sterling by Musicman SUB Ray4 Bitsa Precision EBMM SUB EBMM Stingray 3eq EBMM SUB fretless Out: SbMM SUB Ray 4 Tanglewood TAB CE1 acoustic bass Bitsa precision In the departure lounge: Fretless MIM Jazz OLP MM32 (SR4 HH copy) What I've learned: I like stingrays I don't like jazz necks I don't like the jazz body shape I don't like the jazz pickup placement I don't like jazz bass VVT controls I do like flats Flats/rounds/fretless is a perfectly good excuse to own 3 otherwise ridiculously similar basses. I need to practice more
  17. I had a SbMM Ray4 and thought it sounded pretty good as stock.... but if I would have replaced anything it'd have been the preamp rather than the pickup that I'd have been looking at first. I've got a John East MMSR 3 band in my EBMM SUB and can recommend it, but if you don't need/want the mid control or are on a tight budget, then the Retrovibe Stinger is supposed to be a replica of the original Musicman 2 band preamp and only £39.... If you still want to replace the pickup after that, then the Nordstrand 4.2 is meant to be a very good replica of the early Musicman pickup
  18.
ooooo - let us know how the stinger pre-amp works out please. I've got a GFS MM pro plus on order...... so I'll make some comment about that when it's arrived and installed. Does it look as good as the photo? I'm tempted by one of these..... from here... http://www.guitarsel...4_scratch_plate
Are the genuine EBMM pickguards a good fit on the SbMM SUBs? I have a vague recollection of seeing it mentioned that they weren't exactly the same shape, although I may just be getting muddled with the old OLP stuff. I passed my SbMM SUB on to my gf's kids when I got a Stingray - can try one of my spare pickguards on it if you're not totally sure if it'll fit?
  19. I've got TI flats on my fretted EBMM SUB and Labella ones on my fretless one. There seems to be a bit more tension to the labella ones, which I think I'm going to prefer but haven't had the bass long enough to know for sure. Might try swapping the two sets over soon to see how they each work on the other bass

    EZbass Feedback

Just bought a EBMM SUB from Chris & it was every bit as lovely as described - top fella!
  21.
Well he had already "moved on" from the MM a good while before he started using a Modulus. He played a Spector for a while, BSSM is mostly played on a Wal bass, I think Mother's Milk was played on an Alembic, which had a Modulus neck, I believe. So it seems a little odd that the Modulus neck was the deal-breaker when he didn't play a Modulus bass for a long time after switch from the MM as his main bass. But I've never heard any stories about his getting a signature model from MM. What I meant with my earlier comment was that he didn't have the authority when starting with a MM bass to say "make me a signature model!". It seems he didn't really have any authority until the '90s, when he got a signature bass and signature strings.
From here
Flea was using the basses and really didnt have any direct connection with us. I invited him to slo to play in a The Mike Krukow Charity Golf Tournament ( former Cal Poly Alumni and Major League pitcher now broadcaster for the San Francisco Giants...has an orange axis) and he accepted. He showed up late barefoot and without a shirt golf clubs or balls. we got on pretty good. From there we supplied him with alot of basses and I hated ihis bass smashing phase. He left over money. He wanted a Flea signature Stingray and I said that wouldnt be right by Leo, Tony, Louis and all of the other stingray players. He said that his drummer was going to make a 100k from snare drum royalties and he wanted to make a cut on stingrays. I thought I had him calmed down but then I got wind of the Modulous deal and the last conversation was his atorney trying to tell me what I had to do and I said the only thing I really get to do is hang up on you....last contact. I wish that Flea and us could have split under better circumstances. I was right though The funny story about Flea is that I asked him to do an ad for Slinky Bass strings that had just come out. he had the strings claimed to like them and I had a wacky shot of him and it said "Flea's Gone Slinky" The ad came out and Flea said GHS called and was bummed and he didnt know he was doing a string ad.....

  22.
I don't think Flea really had the authority to command a custom made bass when he was still playing MMs. Are you talking about custom production? As in an instrument designed with an artist with the express intention of putting it into production? As I understand it, that's not a requirement for getting a custom instrument. Although it would appear that Fender or Gibson are more obliging when it comes to that.
I thought the deal with flea was that he wanted a signature model stingray, but ebmm wouldn't do signature models for instruments that were already established, only for artist designed instruments that they thought would be popular enough to justify putting into production. Obviously that was sterling's side of the story - don't think I've ever seen any mention of it directly from flea
  23.
All I can base my own opinion on is my own findings, from loads of rays personally I've had not one weak G so that's where I'm at, I'd love to try one with a bad one if anyone has one for me to try?
I've wondered if this was maybe down to the pickup polepiece height stagger... on both my Ray and my USA SUB the middle polepieces were considerably higher than the E and G ones..... and far more than I'd expected given how flat the neck radius is. I can't say it was ever a massive issue for me, but when I lowered the polepieces in the pickup (the ones on the Ray were tearing my fingers to shreds as they were so sharp!) I've set them more evenly. I think the string volume is a bit more even now, but no way of knowing for sure...
  24.
After playing an old housemates I think stingray i've got a slight hankering for one myself, But the frequency of purple ones turning up saves me from myself, and it sounds even their custom shop would be unwilling to just make sure I got a purple with black scratchplate with maple/maple neck... which i'm pretty sure is a rare production model anyways o.O .... Maybe i'll stick to warmoth.
They may be less common than some colours - but they're out there!
