I don't know if it's been covered but why do people say something's "cheap at half the price"? Of course it bloody is, that would be half price, 50% off. Unless it was extremely overpriced to start with, which pretty much makes the saying the opposite of the reason people seem to say it.

I gigged for ten years only owning one bass, then the internet came along. I think it's not how many basses you need, more a question of how many tempting websites you don't need. I could do the whole of our next gig with a J or a P, active or passive, long or short scale, hollow or solid body, etc etc, and nobody would know any different. If I had to sell up nearly everything I'd keep a fretted and fretless as they'd do everything I need. Oh and my doublebass but I assume we're not counting that sort of thing.

I know it's different type of six string but when I wanted strings for my Bass VI I ordered them direct from LaBella. Just order all the individual strings you need to make your set, cheaper than a preamp packed set in the uk even after postage. All on their website so no need for an expensive phone call.

My fretted had the raised 17th fret issue but the fretless was faultless bar a minute mark on the top of the headstock, both were bought separately with nothing else in the basket so no need to send a good bass stamped as deko to keep a large orderer happy. Must be careful as I have a few basses in my basket at the mo for comparison reasons, a quick early morning deko buy could end up with a few thousand pounds worth of basses being ordered by mistake.

On DB I like to slide around a bit and transferring those songs onto the Variax is not a pleasing experience. I suppose what I'm saying is, it definitely needs to be fretless. I can get a very similar sound to the Variax out of a normal bass using the resonator setting on my cheapy Toneworks AX3A pedal, with a fretless it's really good. So maybe try an effect before buying a new bass.

Re the lined/unlined thing, I started with unlined and have never seen the issue, the side dots are all you see and need. And the plus is that unlined looks far nicer imo. It's not as difficult as it seems it would be, although if you're gigging the need to hear yourself clearly is more important.

Unfortunately I prefer the styling of the 4005 over the more common shape of the 4001/2/3/4, price is a serious problem as the make the others look like pocket money. Maybe one day when I'm rich

A lot of people have told me I'm a natural bassist, which I take as a nice complement, but I'm not at all, it's bloody hard work and I struggle to breathe and play bass at the same time, let alone talk to punters that insist on trying to chat mid song.

I say give the guy a break. So he didn't like Rickenbackers, that doesn't mean he doesn't have other valid opinion. I liked his insistence to add harmonium to everything, that could really add to a bands sound.

I find Rickenbackers to be like Dairylea, you can get a screwdriver to stand up in it but sometimes, on a warm day, a marble will sink in it. I liken Dairylea to Pol Pot but history records don't show he ever ate it, if he did then that's for another thread. Makes no difference anyway, as long it's spread thick enough on the paving slab it'll all be good. You've made your point, now enough with the pointless crap

There's a cream and mint one on ebay at the mo, collection only and it's miles away thankfully On of my bands is considering going for a full glam set, we include a fair few now but if we go the whole hog then a gold sparkle one would be perfect.
