1. Has anyone tried these gut strings? Crazy cheap bass strings or expensive shoelaces? http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=121590951779&alt=web
2. Some of my favourite songs are about the normality of life or totally random subjects, not the usual suspects the OP listed. You already have the subject matter for your first song, a tale of wanting to make a statement to the world but having nothing to say, forcing lyrics from a void, trying night and day, head so quiet it deafens me, screams won't go away, cacophony of silence, wish I could find something to say. Ok it's sh*t but a song can be about anything at all
3. Why is it sexist to find her attractive anyway? I enjoyed her playing and her jiggling about.
4. "How do I find a guitarist?" Look for a massive ego and he should be hiding behind it somewhere. Failing that shiney objects or a tin with dried peas in to shake should get their attention, oh hang on, that's for drummers I think, my mistake, go with the ego thing.
5. I am going to add Victor Damiani who played on some of CAKEs first album and all of their second, Fashion Nugget. I love cake and Gabe Nelson, who Victor replaced and then handed duties back to, is awesome but for me Victor just has that something extra. Doesn't need to overplay, just play what the song needs but when he does lay down a serious line he has such groove.
6. So this Norman chap mixes speaker sizes and actually uses Ashdown, sounds like he needs to join up here to be shown the error of his ways, is he new to bass? I don't know about the tuner but it mmust've been hell of a buzz playing there knowing that NWR would be playing the same gear on the same stage and hour later.
7. My main bass and amp is a Variax and an Ashdown, not so sensible now eh?
8. Err yeah, that's what I meant. Let them form a band and we can go to their gig throw pints of piss at them! Can I come back in now?
9.
This is maybe a bunch of kids looking to form a band, that's great, it should be applauded, not ridiculed.
Well said. When a novice asks on here about how to improve the usual answer is to join a band, and rightly so. Yet here's a band looking for that sort of person and most members are knocking them. I learnt to play as part of a band with mates when I was young and we ended up gigging for ten years. Another fifteen years on and I now play doublebass in one band and electric bass in another, both bands gig regularly. If it gets them into playing live music, whether that be gigging or just playing in their garage then all well and good, if it doesn't then no harm done. As for the grammar, are we really that shallow as to say that someone shouldn't get a band together if their grammar isn't spot on? I'm sure we all understood the advert anyway. I thought the Basschat community was better than this.
10.
Cassette version of The Cure "Staring at a beach" singles compilation was a constant while spending quality time with my first year at university girlfriend. If said fumbling continued long enough, the stereo would flip over to the second side and play the b-sides.
Why can't you buy that B side on Cd, some of them were better than A sides. Anyway, one that sticks in my mind is Star by Belly, Tanya Donellys sweet voice while getting jigging
11. Just too many to choose a favourite but one album I absolutely love from my teens is Disintegration by The Cure, perfection in every way.
12. Think how much better The Who would have been if Keith Moon had just been a bit more predictable.
13. I'll admit I'm hopeless at knowing what timings are called but seem to have an ability to play in those timings without the difficulty that our various guitarists have, and they all know a lot more about theory than me. For me it's all about feel rather than counting, that's not to say it's right, it just works for me. I agree with above comment about playing along and finding that pulse, even accentuate that pulse to give a pronounced beat so help you clearly hear where it is, you brain will soon get used to hearing it and you won't have to accentuate it anymore. Although not usually involving odd timings have a look at some videos of Bootsy or James Brown explaining 'The One' and then apply that to whatever your playing along with, again it might not be right but it works for me. Red Hot Chilli Peppers 'Breaking the girl' is another good one to play along with, even air drum on your lap accentuating that beat if it helps.
14. Now I'm fully informed, the next time something goes tits up and we desperately need to borrow a 'kettle lead' (it's only happened once in 20 years but it could happen again, we all use guitarists), I'll ask the pub if they have an IEC 60320 C15 lead we could borrow, that should put a stop to any confusion . BTW how hard is it to remember to bring your guitar amp and a power lead, never mind he was sacked when we caught him miming his rhythm parts live
15. We had a punter come up to us in the break of a big (for us) gig, about 1300 people, he'd been standing at the side watching for the whole first set just itching to ask those dumbass questions. Well, now was his time, he ask the lead guitarist why he plays an Epiphone? "Because I couldn't find the right notes on a trombone" didn't appear to be the answer he was looking for .
16. The CLB was €60, free shipping because I had a voucher which deleted the shipping, and the HBB was €63 including shipping. So €123 whatever that translates to. Actually just looked on Thomann and the Jazz they have at €125 is £93.59 so about that plus the couple of quid my bank charge me for conversion to Euros, all in just under £100, can't complain at that. I wouldn't worry about the HBB being a 'lower' model, in ways it's better, the eq and XLR out, the finish is just personal preference, I'm using the HBB more than the CLB at the mo and it sounds fantastic plugged in. And when plugged in body woods don't matter. And the HBB is a 34" which to me is preferable. I think an owner of any Deko has the right to feel a bit smug.
17. Maybe slip the tongue in as well? Sorry. It seems a ridiculous situation yet I'm somehow not surprised. Surely if the pubs want you but their agent has to book you, but isn't, then the agent isn't doing their job and the pub needs to speak to them, assuming the pub is paying them.
18. One thing I didn't realise when ordering, as they list all measurements in metric, is that the CLB-10S is 32" scale where the the HBB30 is a 'normal' 34" scale, it's not a big deal especially considering the price but I would have preferred 34" for both. Nevermind. First up, headstock. The HB lettering and the crown logo are pearl inlays whereas the Harley Benton name is just a silver water slide decal. Next the pre amp, the cheaper model has a more 'tweakable' unit with the addition of a presence control a upper and lower mid control over the Fishman unit in the dearer model. I haven't used the Fishman unit yet so can't compare but the cheaper one sounded lovely when I used it with our acoustic band. The Fishman pre is the top of the range in their isys (unfortunate name choice given recent events) range, the bass came with instructions for the pre amp and the booklet covered three or four different units in the isys range with this one being the top one. Inlayed pearl soundhole binding compared to black and white decal under the lacquer, Couple of pictures showing difference in finish, Bridge differences, ignore the wonky roundwound E string Different shaped cutaway, Different output units, the XLR is a nice touch, not tried it yet but I assume it should do away with the need for a DI box when going into a desk. Note that the XLR is on the cheaper model. Even inside, the wood on the more expensive model does look better, this is the inside of the back, So there you go, until I get the same strings on I can't really compare the two soundwise, even then it's fretless against fretted, but looks and feel wise the dearer model does seem a much classier (if that's the right word) instrument.
19. Better late than never Differences between the HBB30 and the CLB-10S. Now one's fretless and the other fretted, and one has Fender tapewounds and the other cheap steel rounds I had kicking about so I can't really do a true tone or volume comparison, the fretted will also have Fender tapewounds when I get some. I'll let some pictures do the talking, you should be able to tell which bass is which as the HBB30 is gloss and the CLB-10S satin. I'll post this now as I'm on my phone and fire up the PC to post the pictures. Back in a mo.
20. My matching pair of Aria STB series J and P basses. The P has a Quarter Pounder pup and Chrome flats while the J has Entwistle JBXN pups with a 'series switch' and D'Addario XL rounds. They both owe me next to nothing but they both sound superb. 21. I like to wildly flail around in an Ian Curtis fashion until my I'll fitting trousers fall to the floor and then masturbate furiously until the chorus. One day someone will notice the bass player
22. This really isn't helping my want for a JC.
23.
My fretless 5-string acoustic arrived today too. It has a very small ding on the back at the heel of the neck. Other than that it seems great.
Is that small ding in the shape of a 'D' for 'deko'? I made that mistake too. They stamp them so they can't be returned as full price instruments.
24. If a pub told us we couldn't play anywhere nearby I'd happily take a retainer fee for the nights they don't want us playing. But I can't see any pub offering that so I'll play where I like thank you.
25. Always liked the look of the Jack Cassady. Do they have a centre block of wood with the pups and bridge mounted to? By the feedback warning I'm assuming not. You know what we need. . . . PICTURES!
