1. Thanks Daf. I haven't tried fitting them with black silks yet though . Looking foward to trying these, I've a feeling they could be 'the one'.
2.
I got a block of wood and shaved off some slivers, and used that as a shim. Wouldn't rubber deaden the sound ?? ....or am I missing something ???
Yes I suppose it should really, I might try wood then. The 'done thing' on the Palatino/Harley Benton EUB is to put a shim of rubber under the peizo to get rid of the harshness so I just used some I had kicking around, it gave a nice gutty thump with the Rockabilly strings and Jtone so I was happy. I'll give wood a go just to see, it's good to experiment .
3. Just to prove you need a DB, we did an acoustic jam night last night, a couple of guitarist/singers went on first, then our band, I got a cheer from the crowd when I carried my DB in and we went down a storm, the venue booked us today for a proper gig. Moral of the story, folks love a doublebass . Enjoy the Stagg, I had to choose between a Stagg or Harley Benton and only went with the HB as it has a taller bridge and chambered body so I assumed I could get a more DBlike sound from it but in reality I don't think there's much to choose between them, just down to personal preference in the end, both great instruments for the money.
4. Pete I have the same J Tone pickups and the treble side is tighter than the bass with no noticeable difference in volume between E&A and D&G. I think the J Tone has a double peizo, back to back, in each pickup (but I could be wrong) so it shouldn't make any difference which side the cardboard is, try rubber like a piece of bicycle inner tube as a shim, I found it to give a better sound on other peizos I've fiddled with. I'm going to get a lapel mike to try, I like the sound of it and our mandolin player has been having problems with nasty peizo clatter too so it could be the answer to his problems as well.
5. I have Chromes on my P bass and love them, but on the strength of some opinions in this thread I have just ordered a medium set of Laklands to try on my Yamaha Bex 4. If they don't suit I'll put them on my fretless P
6. Can I be next in line when they become available please, thanks . Oh, and I like the sound of black silks on black strings
7. Thanks Daf, I prefer a darker thumpier sound sound than a bright jazzy one, excuse my definitions, so I'll try the Honeys when they're available and will put my name down for a try of the Ultrablacks in due course. I've had another proper look at my bridge and although the feet look to be in good contact the bass side will twist relatively easily compared to the treble side which won't budge without considerable pressure (which I didn't want to try), adjustable bridge by the way, so I assume it must be pivoting slightly on a high spot in the centre, a bit more fettling tomorrow as we have an small acoustic gig on Monday. I'm happy with higher tension as I've always prefer a higher tension string on EB, the whackers only went on the EUB as the strings it came with weren't my thing and the the whackers are cheap to try, but they sounded really really good with the rigidity of an EUB, made it more DBlike. The band want me to bow on a couple of tracks but it'll be a while yet, just long, low notes which isn't too bad, anything higher up the fingerboard and it sounds like whales mating . I'll look foward to trying the Honeys, it's fantastic being able to try strings first with the price they are.
8.
NOFX are the (IMO) definitive modern punk band, despite going since the early 80s. They just do exactly what they want, when they want.
And they don't sell butter! This whole punk debate isn't very punk isn't it, trying to categorize everything and put it in it's place with nice tidy label. I love most of the bands mentioned already, old and new, and don't care what it's called, but it will all be put under the 'punk' tag by most and I don't care. I love Gallows first album and wether someone considers it punk or not won't change my opinion of Gallows, just of the pedantic twat trying, and failing, to make everyone agree with him.
9. Better start saving for an acoustic double bass now then, it's an inevitable and slippery path
10. I know I know, different basses, different players etc, but all things being equal which of the Innovation strings are the loudest would you say? I mean played pizz not arco by the way. The reason I ask is I played a gig this Saturday acoustically and I didn't feel I was keeping up with the two guitars, it may have been louder out front as being stood behind the damn thing seems to be the worst place be . I'll add that I'm new to acoustic double bass, been playing EB for 20 years and EUB for just over a year. The EUB has whackers on and is obviously always amplified so copious volume on tap probably hasn't helped with technique and with better technique comes more volume. I ordered my new acoustic bass with Rockabillys on as I'd hoped they would be similar in sound to the whackers on the EUB (which work very well) but with more tension and a bit more refinement, which they are, just not particularly loud. Saying that the D and G are pack more punch than the E and A so it could be bridge related. I did sand the bridge feet on the bass so they sit better as I wasn't happy with how they were when I got it, I'm pretty hands on and enjoy doing this sort of thing so no biggy. The gig was in an underground cavern so strange, but very good acoustics. Anyway I'm going off on a tangent now, back to the original question, which Innovation strings would be louder than the Rockabillys, does more tension necessarily mean more volume, I doubt it's that simple. I've put my name down to try the Honeys and I'll probably try the Ultras after that as they seem like my kind of thing.
11. Hi, can I be added to the list please? I ordered my new bass with the rockabillys on the strength of these innovation pages, I had to start somewhere, but it was a toss up between rockabillys, honeys or ultrablacks. I went with the rockabillys as I have wackers on my EUB (which work particularly well despite the nay sayers)so thought I'd break myself in tension wise with something lighter but I'd like to test the water so to speak with the honeys. Thanks, Allan.
12. Been caught stealing / Janes Addiction
13. I'd worry about my sound getting washed out and getting it to gigs could be quite draining.
14. Mostly ebay if I'm honest. My last two purchases were my doublebass from Gedo in Germany and my Yamaha Bex 4 from here. I was feeling a little guilty about not supporting my local shops etc so tried to source some flats for the Bex 4 in my two most local shops, I wanted either flatwound or nylon tapewound but was told that nobody uses flats anymore in the first shop, I said I fancied trying nylon tapewounds on the Bex 4 to see how it sounded to which he replied it would sound "old fashioned and dull". I tried the second shop which was a more traditional acoustic instrument shop, asked if they sold nylons, he said they only sold acoustic bass strings, silly me had forgotten about the laws of string fitment and only bronze strings can go on acoustics, back to the internet then.
15. I've just bought Valhalalfs Bex 4 so thought I'd better start my own feedback thread.
16. I've just bought Alexs Bex 4. Great guy to deal with, kept me informed at all stages. The bass was in better condition than I had expected as he had pointed out all the bad points in his ad but they really were very minor, very honest. Thanks mate
17. I've always felt a need for one of these but having just bought Valhalalfs Bex 4 and a new doublebass in the last month I don't think I'll be able to afford a divorce as well. Someone buy it quick to stop my temptation.
18. Pete, I had to file my nut down a bit which made it much nicer to play, there was a good 2 or 3 mm of clearance between the strings and fingerboard. Isn't there a brass insert in the bridge which would mean you couldn't take any off at the adjusters?
19.
Thank goodness someone's taken this. Wonderful basses. I love mine, the sound is immense if you blend the soapbar and piezo pickups. They look the dog's whatsits too.
I know, I've only just seen it on here and couldn't believe no one had bought it. In the best colour too!
20. I can't let another one slip by, I'll take it :-) Could you PM me your details for payment, I presume Papal will be ok. Thanks.
21. Ooh I've been wanting one of these in this colour since I let one slip by on ebay a couple of years ago. I really want this. I'll check my bank tonight and PM you. Thanks, Allan.
22. Not a looper but while we're mentioning multi tracking there's a cover of the Chili Peppers 'Can't Stop' on YouTube all on an upright, I think it's really cool. Apologies if it's already been posted, using my phone so videos are showing up really slowly.
23. I agree that Thomann are a very good company to deal with, my EUB came from them and they were very good, but Gedo have been very good too, that bass is mass produced and the couriers have dropped it, neither of these things are Gedos fault, and they gave me all options of how to deal with it. I choose to glue it back on myself for a discount as I would end up with the bass I wanted, with the knowledge that the fingerboard is now rock solid and the Hidersine case I wanted basically thrown in for free. I'm happy. On a previous thread we came to the conclusion that, all things being equal, a hybrid will sound better than full laminate, and Thomann don't list any hybrids so the choice between Thomann and Gedo was made for me. This thread was purely to ask what was a fair price to glue a fb back on, which was answered in the second post, the bass had already been repaired and is being used so no more advice on what to do with it please, I don't mean to sound harsh but it's all sorted. Thanks for the replies
24.
why not send it back? if this has happened surely it indicates inferior workmanship, youmay fix this now , be happy for a few months and something else will go wrong.
I would want the same bass and the rest of this one seems good, I could get another one which may have a different issue, at least I know this fb is rock solid as I've done it myself. Another one would be at the mercy of international couriers which is never good. I can't afford a good quality bass which is available in this country within driving distance, I did a lot of research of budget basses and Gedo and Thomann came out on top, but they're still mass produced basses which in turn leads to these sort of issues sometimes. I could wait for a second hand one to come up locally but that could still have unknown issues and I may not have enough experience to spot issues and get stitched up. If anything happens to this one in a few months it will get fixed or returned as it has a two year warranty. I know a lot a folks would say save up and spend more money on a better bass but it's not that I can't afford too, it's that I can't justify it at this point in time with a cottage to renovate and a family. It's basically a Gedo or Thomann bass or no bass at all.
