1. As I said to the last person mulling over the idea of off loading 2x HD112's; before you advertise them PM me with a price as I want, nay neeeeed, 2xHD112s to give my rig the flexibility it deserves. Now PM me and order away.
2. I would most definitely be interested in joining in with this one. Hopefully it'll tie in nicely with either a few gigs or the studio time that one of my bands is starting to look at.
3.
I bet many porn sites were really fed up that that name had already been taken!
I did wonder if someone had got confused as to what type of new knobs I was looking. I certainly didn't attempt to access that link from my work pc!
4. Can't believe no one has suggested the £30(ish) Vox Amplug "custom designed for your requirements".
5. Ooooo, that's the kind of thing I was looking for. Thanks, will definitely have to get in touch with them.
6. A little help in tracking down some new knobs for my bass would be appreciated. I'm looking for chrome knobs, smooth not knurled, and a little more out of the ordinary. I've spent my hours on Google looking at various places that sell parts and they all seem to sell the same knobs at similar prices. None of them really float my boat. Is there any one out there that could suggest somewhere to look at, or a company to talk to about having them made to order, so that I can get off of the laptop and start playing my bass. Cheers Dave
7. Ooo Lincolnshire finance package. You're a vey bad man.
8. Even if you are a smoker (although I don't smoke in the house) bringing gear in that has previously occupied the home of a smoker is horrendous. I bought a line 6 amp from an older chap who smoked heavily and that absolutely reaked. The way I got rid of the smell was to use a product called "Caravan Cleaner". I don't know what is in it but it's safe to use on anything and cleans any form of dirt/stain from every surface. I'm not sure where the wife buys it from, possibly aldi, but I'll ask her when she comes home and repost just incase anyone is interested in trying it.
9. Stop it; You're a bad man! The only thing stopping me from crumbling is the fact that you only have one, and I ideally want two, well; that and a needing funds for other things.
10. Desperately need someone to buy this before I end up doing something that will result in a divorce. Rich is a great guy and always seems to be selling the Cab that I want when I can least afford it (see the HD212 that I bought from him earlier this year). Good luck with finding a buyer (quickly) and if it's still hanging around in a month or so then I might be in touch.
11. Yamaha RBX270J - stunning bass and GAK are selling them at £199 brand new. For the money (IMO) it's unbeatable.
12.
MB1. "Best way to tell the wife I've bought a new bass?" ...Semaphore?
Nah, definitely morse code; that way she doesn't have to be able to see you and can't take aim properly!
13. Definitely up for gig swap/sofa surfing when and if either of my bands get ready for gigging. I'll definitely be in touch in the future.
14. Alain is a top bloke to deal with. I bought part if his strap button listing and found the following. Good communication throughout. Items were dispatched on the stated day and arrived very well packaged (in a gravy free jiffy bag) in very good condition. Pleasure to deal with (although my dog is still sulking about the lack of gravy) Thanks
15. I'll throw a yahama recommendation in to the mix. RBX270J Dirt cheap but a beautiful example of a P/J bass. It's so cheap that you'll have many pounds left for pickup swaps and any mods that you may wish to do.
16.
though on other forums I have come across people who much prefer the chunkier necks. They say their hands cramp up when using the thinner necks.
This comes down to a slight change in left hand technique between thin and fat profile necks. If you're used to the effort required on a fat (baseball bat style) neck then when you move to a thinner neck you end up, subconsciously, using more pressure on the strings than required. This results in an unnatural level of muscle use and, as such, premature hand cramp.
17. Thought I'd do a quick update on this thread as it's easier than doing cartwheels. I took the little yammie to rehearsal tonight and got to have a good play with it. I have to say that I am totally over the moon with the way it feels and just how easy it is to play. I was a little bit perturbed by the neck relief when I first got it, but the band plays tuned down half a step amd that's fixed that one. The action is probably still a little high for my tastes, but not uncomfortably so. The only things this bass needs are 1, a new bridge (I'm thinking babicz) 2, a Hipshot detuner (but all basses need one of those) 3, new knobs 4, jim dunlop strap lock buttons (already on route from another BC user) 5, pick up and wiring upgrade (it sounds good with stock pups but something is lacking, when I work out whats missing I'll be able to work out what pups) I would say that this bass plays almost as well as any US built fender I've ever played and with the above upgrades it'll look/sound as good as it feels.
18. I see you've carried out this repair, but for others that may have this problem, my solution was: use a matchstick (other thin pieces of would may work but I can't comment) that was liberally coated in arraldite (other two part epoxy resins are available) This was put in to the strap button hole, it was a snug fit, and tapped home with a hammer and scrap of wood. It gave it a few minutes to start to cure before trimming the excess matchstick with a sharp knife. I then screwed the strap button in and allowed it all to cure overnight. This fix has lasted over 15 years without trouble and didn't even cause a problem when I changed the strap button for a Jim Dunlop strap lock button.
19. They're the kind of pointers I was after. I'll have to do some research and try to work out what I want to do with it. I know it needs a Hipshot detuner but I need to photo shop it and work out if I want to swap all the hardware for black, I'm not a fan of shiny shiny chrome!
20.
Just brought up a pic of an RBX270J. The bridge looks no better or worse than what you find on MIM Fenders. Check the dimensions, but it looks like a Gotoh Contemporary would fit the bill for a chunkier bridge:
If the bridge was as substantial as that I'd be less worried about it. Mine looks more like a vintage fender style folded steel sheet. I'll post a pic of it tonight.
21. Yesterday was a rather glorious day. I took a half hour drive to pick up my new bass. Nothing expensive or flash; It's a yamaha RBX270J, that I picked up for an absolute steal on ebay (one was listed on here the day that I won the auction for significantly more than I paid). The ad said the bass was like new. Like new? It was bought 18 months ago and has not been played in that time! The fit and finish are superb for a bass at that price point. The neck is devine all the way down to the dusty end. I don't know what it's like plugged in yet as I've not had chance to try it. The only potential issue with it, apart from the untested electrics (which can easily be fixed), is the bridge. It might be fine, but, it seems weak amd flimsy. If one of you wonderful folks could suggest a decent bridge to drop on there it'd be appreciated as then I won't have to start another topic.
22.
I have a pair of Berg HD112 cabs.... ...So I'm thinking about changing them for the new lightweight CN112.
I'm after a pair of HD112's to give my rig a nice bit of flexibility. If you do decide to make the change then drop me a message and, if I'm in a suitable financial position, I'll rehome them for you. Cheers
23. As most of the equipment I buy is picked up at far less than I think it's worth (tend to have a rule of 50% or less than what it'd cost new) I can usually get away with... "I might have accidentally bought a..." Today it was a bass. Three weeks ago it was a guitar amp. I usually have a good reason for buying something and the cash comes out of my pocket money (what I leave in my account for fuel and fun before transferring the rest of my wages in to the family account) so the wife despairs a little but doesn't tend to mind. Big purchases (Like the Shuttlemax and Berg 2x12) still come out of my pocket money, after a lot of saving, but are discussed in depth before I risk buying as there may a justifiable business case for spending the money on something else (hence Bass Direct have still got a Roscoe Century 4 with P/J pups). So to reiterate;: Up to about £300 - buy but inform before arrival Over £300 - seek approval from the financial director before committing to purchase.
24. Tiny holes in t-shirts? Check Buckle rash? Check Scuffs, dings, chips and other assorted playing marks? Check Am I worried? Not really as 99% of those marks have happened at various gigs I've played up and down the country. As such; everyone of those imperfections is a little bit of my bass playing life.
