I came it to this topic assuming op had 2 8x10s or something equally large. I have, I assume, the same head. I run that through 2 1x12s and a 2x12. It's not too big, it's just very flexible and capable. I heartily support swapping out 1 4ohm 2x12 for 2 8ohm 1x12s. You finsh with a rig that sounds the same no matter how loud you want it as, to increase the volume, you just add more air movement.
Mind you, the built in distortion is not that brilliant but it does have a separate effects output and I take this to a separate amp and use the amps distortion.
It's this I was thinking of. I'm in a (musically) three piece band and some of the songs feel a little flat in the solos, tends to be the ones where the nuances in the solo need to shine through so I can't "busy up" the bass. What I do have at my disposal is a really nice, all valve, guitar rig so I was thinking of being able to stomp the box and replace the missing guitar. I think I might have to bite the bullet and give one a try.

Lovely stuff. Should be able to make it, I'll put it on the calendar and try to stop SWMBO from booking anything else.
Hi dave I've got the shuttlemax 9.2 and love it. What settings do you use for the dirty valve sound, I can't seem to dial it in. Pics of your settings would be cool. Cheers Thebassman
If I can get the house to myself for an hour then I'll see what I can do. At them moment my amp is set pretty flat and clean as it is a tone that works well in the band. When I first got the rig I had a dirty valve crunch that worked lovely in the living room but just got lost in the distortion of the guitarist.

Shuttlemax owner - check Play rock and metal - check Have gas for new amp - NO! The amp is stunning IMO. I've been incredibly happy with mine since the day I got it. No matter what I want to do with my bass tone; this amp seems perfectly capable of doing it. The power amps are incredibly clean and clear so however I set my tone in the living room, it sounds the same in rehearsal. The two pre amps are directed to both power amps, this gives many cab and power ooptions but no possibility of a "stereo" rig. As youtube shows; the amp is capable of being played very clean, but if you crank the gain on the valve pre then it can get very dirty. If you're anywhere near me then you'd be welcome to have a noodle on my rig.
There is a midlands bass bash on the cards, so all being well, I'll bring it then :-)
Doesn't seem to be anything in events. Keep me in the loop as I'd like to make an appearance. We can have a stupid rig off!
Anyone else want to throw a potential spanner in the works?
The cost of the geotec surveys where you're planning on firing this behemoth up? While I applaud your plans to destroy Nottingham; I wouldn't like to see a basschatter fall in to a sink hole caused by seismic activity! P.S. let me know when you're going to do it as there are a couple of hills nearby that'd give me an excellent view of the carnage!

I've not long since replaced a BBOT with a babicz that I picked up from here. The difference between the old a new bridges on my yammie was like night and day! I don't think it did anything significant to the sustain, but all of a sudden the low frequencies came to life. An added bonus is the that I no longer shred my hand on the saddle adjusters when playing metal sixteenths. I would recommend a Babicz, but, they're expensive and the black ones never appear used. It's a lot of cash to drop on something that you can't really try before you buy!
Blackstar HT-1R or HT-5R would be my choice. Brilliant little amps, and can put out a fair amount of noise if you ever wanted them to. Liam
I have a HT-5S (Older non reverb model) for my own noodling and any visiting guitarists. The tiny little head looks cute as a button sat atop it's pair of matching 1x12 cabs. It makes a very lovely noise on either the clean or dirty channels. The infinite shape feature is more than a gimmick, it really does help to get anywhere from a traditional British Marshall sound right through to a modern heavy weight distortion. I'd definitely consider one. The 5W combos can be picked up for very little cash.

Is the amp or the cab most important when you want a good sound?
Dave_the_bass replied to gjones's topic in Amps and Cabs
A venue where I gig regularly has the bass amp going through a really nice Ampeg Classic Series SVT 410he. They started off pairing it with an Ampeg PF- 500, which broke, the replacement was an Ashdown Mag 300 which also broke, and now they've hired an ancient Peavey firebass 700 with a broken input (you have to use the effects return thereby bypassing the preamp completely). The amazing thing is, whatever amp they use, the sound out of that cab is always great! The 410he cabs are not cheap. They typically sell for around £700. Which leads me to the conclusion that you're much better off spending your cash on the best cab you can afford and economising on the amplifier rather than the other way around. I wonder if there's any other Basschattters out there who have had a similar experience of playing a cheap and cheerful amp through a high end cab and getting a great sound?
Surely the most important part of the chain is the bass. If that sounds good then the amp just needs to increase the signal and the cab just needs to be able to convert the electrical signal in to air movement. My basses, though budget brands/models, are capable of producing the tone that I want through my amp with a flat eq. This means; when I'm using someone else's rig I only have to tweak the eq to find a good representation of my tone as some rigs have different eqs when "flat". The problem with someone's preferred tone tends to appear when they like a sound with wildly boosted bass and/or treble. The rig they own has probably been bought because it's capable of producing that sound cleanly, where as the rig they're borrowing possibly can't. That being said, in my opinion; a budget head through a good cab always stands a better chance of sounding good than a high end head that's being strangled by a budget cab. -
Signed. It's up to nearly 44 400 signatures. Not bad for a days work.
Wow, his thread has been much more mixed than I thought. I always thought that BD was universally loved, and it was The Gallery that had the grumpy service. I've not met Mark in person, but will definitely pop in when I'm down that way next. Small online purchases have always been fine.
I've always found the guys in gallery to be pleasant to deal with too. I guess I'm just universally adored

The three places I've used are: tesco, good quality but my local store only offer one size of prints. Jessops, very good quality but a little expensive Costco, order online collect in store, cheap, good range of sizes, very good quality, excellent value for money. Only downside is needing a membership or knowing someone who is a member

Berg 2x12 vs 2x 1x12: I was able to A/B mine at the weekend with full range music from my ipod so I feel I can probably give you my experience with reasonable confidence. My 212 had tweeter set flat My 112s had one tweeter flat (top cab) and one tweeter off (bottom cab) So both speaker configs are the same with 2x 12" cones and 1 tweeter. Both are 4ohm configs and both were being run from identical power amps. The difference in volume was imperceptible if any. The 212 appeared to have less low end and high end than the 2x112, but I think it produced a more balanced full range tone where as the 2x112 gives a slightly mid scooped sound (hence seeming to deliver more high and low end). It really is down to personal preference as it comes down to what you like. I find the 2x112s are easier to transport. One cab in each hand means I can put one down to open doors. Either way I can carry bass, head and cab(s) in one trip unless I take all of the rig! After having a good listen this weekend I can definitely confirm than my prefered tone is bass - shuttlemax 12.2 - (power amp A) HD212 (power amp 2x HD112 Hope this helps.

Isnt it nice to meet BC members for real?
Dave_the_bass replied to witterth's topic in General Discussion
the more basschatters I meet the more i realise I'm a really bad bass player...
This +many thousands! In all fairness, I'm not surprised the people from here that I meet are nice. A, They're bass players. I've never met one I didn't like be it from here, or randomly at/after a gig, or in the workplace. B, I'm usually handing over a pile of cash in return for decluttering their home. -
No Thanks! On the original subject of minor sale becoming major indebtedness I once went to a music shop in Derby (the late lamented Neville Brothers) to buy a set of strings for my acoustic (£6.00 or so). I went back to the office after lunch with a nice, shiny, brand new saxophone. I still dont understand how. Any ideas?
That's the Derby factor. I went in to foulds to replenish pick stocks and walked out with a Cello. This was when guitars etc were up stairs and nowhere near the "real" instruments!

The shop was smaller than I expected, but there's lots of beautiful gear in stock and available to play. I got on with Mark really well and spent quite a long time just sat there chatting. I think you'll enjoy your visit; but you may find differently.

It's been suggested further up thread, but glossed over, and it seems like the perfect solution if you follow this process. 1, purchase a suitable, amp modelling, di to place between existing pedal board and amp. 2, hire yourself some time in a local rehearsal room and plug the di in to the provided pa 3, spend a few hours getting the di to perfectly replicate your rig sound through the pa with a flat eq. 4, turn up to any gig knowing that all you need to do is plug the xlr cable that the engineer gives you in to your own di and send him a tone that he can tweek for room acoustics. 5, be safe in the knowledge that you can tweek volume and/or eq of your rig to take in to account "on stage weirdness (very technical term )" without drastically changing the sound your putting out to the pa Feel free to ignore or shoot me down in flames but this approach seems logical and less expensive to me. It shouldn't take as much time during changeovers either.

I tend to chuck the songs on a cd and put it in my car. Every journey for the next week is done with the music in the background while I subconsciously learn the song and absorb the bass line. I then sit down with the bass and tend to be able to play a close approximation after a couple of attempts. I then turn up to rehearsal to find that I'm the only person who knows the song structure!

I have one bass that has a soap bar pup; it's an active Kent Armstrong. I love the tone of it and the luthier that I take my basses to really rates them. I don't know what the price is like, or the availability, as it was the stock pup in the bass. Hope this helps
I really loved that cab it was actually the 2nd hd212 that I have owned, having sold the original one because of its weight. I missed the tone so I bought a second! Powered it with a shuttle 9.0 and it was smokin! Would be interested to hear how it sounds with my shuttle 9.2!
Mmmm, I'm seeing a, Cilla Black hosted, tearful reunion in the not too distant future. Give me a few weeks to get all of the post Christmas stuff out of the way and we'll sort out getting together for some loudness.
One of the best cabs on the market, I only sold my hd212 was because of the weight, awesome piece of gear!
It's your HD212 that I bought from Richardd

I'm the happy owner of fretmeister's HD112's and they kick like a mule! I'm also the happy owner of a HD212. This has a slightly more crisp tone than a pair of 112s; it's not hugely different in sound to my old 6x10 cab. There's much love in my home for the HD berg cabs (yep that does include the wife and kids). The only problem with the 212 is the fact it contains dark matter; well that's the only reason I can think of that something that size weighs as much as it does. It's not exceptionally heavy, just heavier than you'd expect.

Best cabinet options for a Genz Benz GBE1200 head
Dave_the_bass replied to harrybgoode's topic in Amps and Cabs
I used to have the GBE750. That sounded lovely through the 610T (ask bramleyapple as it now resides with him). The 610 is an awkward beast to manoeuvre but does fit in a ford focus with the rear seats down (and leaves plenty of space for other gear) I'm now on a Shuttlemax with a selection of berg 12s. This is also a beautiful sounding combination.
