1. We had a late '60's vintage Fender VI in the shop for a while. I kinda liked it but it really struggled in lower registers if played like a more 'conventional' bass rather than a Bari guitar. I'd never have considered it to handle 'regular' bass duties without a lot of eq'ing on both amp and desk. Obviously there's people out there doing this though so it's obviously possible to get one to work!
2. If you're likely to be playing a lot at home then a T-Bird my not be the best choice as it's not the most comfortable of basses to play seated
3. The Aggie P is based on Dave Boonshoft's personal '64P bass and sounds really nice if you're after a more vintage tone.
4.
My ideal bass rig on a budgie !!! ,would be a ashdown eb180 combo
You might need to allow a bit extra for some hefty vet bills once you've removed the squashed budgie from under the Ashdown
5. La Bella still make the strings and, interestingly, don't often mention the Jamerson connection much any more after his widow sued them for using his name and image for marketing purposes. They switched to Donald Duck Dunn instead (which is still pretty impressive!). They are the 760M Original 1954 set.
6. Bass is an easy choice for me. I don't know what the gig it just has to be a Precision as that'll cover any gig. Best one I could see within budget is the funky Roger Waters model at £500: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/252457-fs-fender-roger-waters-signature-precision-immaculate-condition-l500/page__pid__2646616#entry2646616 Again, without knowing the gig I'd look for a flexible but powerful head with plenty of tone-shaping options. There's not a lot out there that's well made and has a strong gigging rep so the Carvin BX700 does it for me: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/251659-carvin-bx700-lightweight-flexible-powerful-head-on-hold/page__pid__2644931#entry2644931 For cabs I'd look for a good all rounder that I know can handle a lot of gigs with ease and isn't overly coloured. This Aguilar GS112 looks a very strong contender (although it may now have gone!). http://basschat.co.uk/topic/251551-aguilar-gs-1x12-nt-l200-traded/page__fromsearch__1
7.
Once again I missed a Diamond Bass Compressor for sale on here... dammit! Not a particularly 'remedial' compressor, it's true - but it doesn't half make your bass sound big and glossy.
Still my personal favourite. Almost like a compressor for people who don't like compressors
8.
It's a controller for a sub bass platform that Dave stands on.
Jools is fairly tough on stage volumes and quite particular about the way the band is set up live. Dave's cab is invariably firing straight at Jools so he has to be very careful about volume. He much prefers to hear himself through an amp and cab and likes to feel the bass as well. He has a custom built pad that he stands on which generates a lot of the feel of a big rig thundering away without the volume. I've tried something similar at MusikMesse and was really surprised at how well it worked. We were listening through headphones whisky standing on the pads and it genuinely felt like we were listening 'live' at far greater volume than we were being fed through the cans
9.
Does there always have to be a ruthless dissection any time Later/Hootenanny is on the telly? Another way of looking at it is that it's far and away the least cringeworthy countdown to the bells on the television. I happily watched Hootenanny and at the bells I went outside my front door with a dram of Glenrothes and watched fireworks while being serenaded by the ships in the harbour tooting their horns. A splendid time was had by all.
I so agree with this. It never ceases to amaze me how many BC'ers seem to revel in having a go at live music on TV. Doesn't seem to matter which genre, channel or programme style. There's always somone taking huge offence at professional musicians playing live on TV for the entertainment of others. My step-son and I watch it together most years and always enjoy it. Our tastes are incredibly different but there's always some people we both like and some we both think aren't so hot. Every year someone pops up and surprises us and that's always some highs and lows but, overall, I'd rather watch this than the tripe and/or repeats churned out elsewhere.
10. FM cables are very high quality and very hard to twist because of the, harder than usual, outer casing.
11. Shop stock is likely to be mixed Italian and Indonesian. If there is a choice go for Italian simply because there are people out there who will pay more for European than Far Eastern manufactured product. I think if it was pushed to make a choice of any of the smaller light weight MB cabs then the 210's would probably get my vote. 1 is loud enough for rehearsing and a lot of smaller gigs and 2 combined allows you to stack vertically so you can bring the 2nd one much closer to your ears for on-stage monitoring
12.
Did you back-to-back the sound comparison of the two types of cabs? Same room, same bass, same amp? Having read some of Marco's comments I can't see a reason this should be the case - certainly not to the extent of 'no comparison'. A thread from the start of last year indicates this should not be the case: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/226964-markbass-all-made-in-indonesia-now-and-heavy/page__view__findpost__p__2364926 I've not had the chance to do a back-to-back test but my Indonesian gear sounds great and has been faultless.
Try as hard as I can and I cannot hear the slightest difference between Indonesian and Italian made MarkBass cabs. We regularly see both in the shop and get loads of opportunities to test them back to back. The only way we can tell the difference is to turn them over, crawl round the back and find the tiny 'made in' plate on the back - you wouldn't believe how many times we've had to do this!

Vail Johnson Played with: Kenny G Keb' Mo', Herbie Hancock, Michael Bolton, Peabo Bryson, Edgar Winter, James Ingram, Patti Austin, David Benoit, Kieko Matsui, Paula Abdul, Warren Hill, Gil Scott Heron, Whitney Houston, George Benson, Carmine Appice, Frank Gambale, Eric Marienthal, Chris Botti, Kirk Whalum,David Cassidy, Phil Perry, Steve Perry, Stevie Nicks. . . Guitar World Magazine Bassist of the Year Bass Player Magazine Jazz Bassist of the Year But of course to the BassChat massive he's an arrogant twat who needs to be shouted down because he doesn't know what he's talking about. Nice one guys
14. BassGear are signed up as well now and we're really pleased to have Roger Sadowsky, plus a selection of his basses, with us on the stand for the weekend. Roger will be around to talk about his instruments, the art of a pro setup, commissioning a custom build etc. It's very rare to see him over here so for any Sadowsky fans it'll be well worth coming along for a chat
15. I'm loving the photo-essay of the packing and unpacking - you really should have taken a pic of the delivery man for completeness though
16.
and they're here! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/252310-ncd-tks-1126-x2-dont-look-if-you-hate-red/
Looks great - obviously red is the fastest colour
17. Just a quick note to say that Tommy is expanding his production facility to accommodate increased demand so the workshop will be closed for a while from mid January. UK order deadline via BassGear for January completion is 17:00 on 30th December. Any orders placed after this time will be delivered mid to late March 2015. Edit - Last production slots already filled
18.
can't believe there are people on talkbass saying this looks good. It looks like a toilet seat lid!! no accounting for taste!
If that's a holly top then it'll look stunning in the flesh. The AJ series is an amazing instrument. I've only ever played one and it was stunning. Absolutely not my kind of bass by any stretch of the imagination but having been able to play one they immediately make 'sense'
19.
Incredible, but its a Fodera. This is how much they are, and the pricelist does show that these basses go for $20-35k new. What I find far more incredible is someone paid this, and is now selling it so quickly.
Totally agree. This sort of spec is very much a custom order - Fodera will do anything they can to make a customer happy (as you'd expect in this price range) and it's amazing the lengths they will go to post-sale to help someone if they aren't happy with the spec they ordered.
20. These are now, very, very, rare. Jim Bergantino only builds them from time to time in small batches. Last time I asked there were none planned in the production schedule.
21.
you got a great job Barrie.!!
It's not all it's cracked up to be, lol. Roger seems like a lovely guy though. I've got a huge respect for what he's achieved with a, relatively, single minded vision of how an instrument should be made and what it should sound like
22. I saw a cancelled order AJ go on sale not that long ago at about $25,000 and it went in under 24 hours. This one is pretty unique for various reasons and I'd guess it might have cost $35,000 new. However, those unique options could make it harder to sell than a 'regular' AJ with a Holly top.
23. TH500 works really well with the S112's. That's our standard demo rig in the shop
24.
I assume that's a glowing endorsement making a late bid for understatement of the year? 😄 I'm going to have to get over to Bass Gear in the new year.
We've just ordered an H115 for demo purposes. N.B. This cab only comes with the cloth front at the moment. Metal grille versions available later in the year.
25.
14kg?!? That's one kg more than my tiny MarkBass NY121. I'm looking forward to trying some of these out in the new year. Thinking of seeing if I can find cabs that will work for both upright and bass guitar to save space and rationalise.
It's even closer than that I think. 0.7KG
