Best value stuff out there are the moment is probably the TC Electronic BH500 (£275) and their BC range of cabs (e.g. (£249 for the 2x12). So that comes to £524 new which is over budget but will be under £400 if you can find used! You could buy both pedals and sell or return the one that you like the least? If you buy new over here you can return it for free no questions asked - beauty of the distance selling regulations. Alternatively if you buy used you can sell on for the same price and just take a small hit in the postage. Or you could buy new from the US and sell used for the same price over here! And if you don't have the cash to splash out on two at once - that's what credit cards were invented for!

I got mine from Prymaxe for about £115 - seem to be out of stock now however!

I have two of those cabs - ironically you can't use two of them with the Micro VR head as it makes it produce nasty popping/cracking noises so [size=4]I use them with an Orange Terror Bass instead![/size]

Not really a case of a different league, just different sounding pedals. The OFD can't replicate the B3K and vice versa. The OFD way more versatile, but I only liked some of the low gain natural tube amp overdrive sounds and wasn't so keen on the rest. The B3K is more suited to playing modern metal with a growly bass and a pick. It can of course be used for more than that, but that sounds like what it was designed for.

Hi, I figured it out. I'm doing some work for a client which needs me to connect to their VPN which forces my browser to use a proxy server. When this is enabled, I don't get any of the toolbars, I guess some scripts are being blocked!

I love the classic '57 2-tone sunburst and gold look on a P as well. I haven't found a bass I like enough to keep yet though! I had a Roadworn and Classic 50s in the house together, the Classic was by far the better soudning and playing bass but the neck was too wide and the fingerboard edges too sharp. Should've kept the body from the Classic 50s and found another neck!

What hardware are you currently using to record the bass? If it doesn't have two inputs already, you may be best off buying an audio interface with more inputs then you can plug in any mic and your bass. Then you are free to chop and change mics in the future. If you want a USB mic the Rode Podcaster looks good. But make sure whatever software you are using to record can handle input from two different devices at once (most will be able to but some simple programs may not).

Mine does a low D, low B, even if I drop that to A, without issues. Then again I use my fingers when tuning. Probably just some strange resonance coming from your bass at that pitch that confuses it slightly.

If you've only got a 1x12, I would look to get a second cab rather than trying to get more volume by watts alone. An LM3 into two cabs should be louder than the LM800 into one and present less risk of damaging your speakers.

For dark warm barely overdrive, I have settled on the Bearfoot Blueberry, or for eq control and touch sensitive drive, the Xotic Bass BB Preamp. I also dig the Darkglass Vintage Deluxe but it's a different sound - kinda like running a bass amp and guitar amp in parallel. This is the first time I've had 3 od/preamp pedals in the house that I want to keep and could happily bin the rest. But they all do something different, there is no one pedal to rule them all. Some sound better with a pick vs fingers, Jazz vs Precision, etc.

I upgraded from a BB415 (which I think has the same pickups as the BB425X) to BB1025X. Much more clarity in the P pickup, especially on the low B. I used to only like the BB415 in the middle pickup position as I found the P pup a bit too dark and the low B to sound quite 'undefined' like it was hard to detect the pitch of the note; but with the 1025X I often play the P pup soloed and get great definition on the low B. Not sure if the difference is down to pickups, bridge, nut or construction, probably bit of everything plus a good old dose of confirmation bias I expect! I liken it to going HD - I can see the improvement, but my Mum still watches Freeview in standard def on channels 1-4 and can't tell the difference!

I see you have a Dod Bass EQ in your signature - try using that to lower the bass when practicing?

Can't you just turn the volume down? I use my OBT at home, although I replaced the fan with a silent one as the original was too noisy.

How do you rate those red strings vs the regular black or white ones?

I like that the 'Mini' Q-Tron is the biggest pedal on your board except for the B3!

I've tuned my 5'er down that low (with standard strings) for fun, and while the string were floppy it sounded cool as, especially for metal. You might not be able to reproduce much of that fundamental, but it's all about the harmonics above that, being produced with bright strings, a growly bass and a bit of distortion.

Anyone tried the Dirty Donny edition of the Swollen Pickle? http://www.jimdunlop.com/product/dirty-donny-swollen-pickle It loses one of the internal controls but has the remaining internal controls now on the outside, plus the pedal is smaller. Anyone know what that missing control is and if it makes a difference to bass use?

I do like the BB Pre, it has a mid boost that really makes the bass stand out in a heavy mix more so than any other dirt pedal I've used. I imagine most tubescreamer derived pedals are good at this!

I no longer get the toolbar buttons to add images etc when writing a post or reply, and if I edit a reply, my IMG tags with square brackets turn into HTML IMG tags with angled brackets, that are malformed and end up just printing the text when I hit save. I'm on latest version of Chrome 64-bit on Windows 8.1, just noticed it today and was fine yesterday with the same setup!

<p>They do look great, only ever seen one on stage though with The Dead Weather: Here is a cheaper option if you just want a white semi hollow - to be honest I prefer this one!
