1. Is that place still going? I used to pop in there regularly (in a former life), I even bought my first ever brand new bass amp from them but last time I was there was probably mid to late 90s
2. I'd say that something like that deserves a Viking Burial!
3. Regarding "mingling" it's always after the "tear down" and preferably after we got paid!
4. I saw him play the NEC on that tour, who would have known at the time it would be his last?
5. On Saturday we played at the Maidens Head in Maidenhead, the gigs here are arranged through a promoter and it's not particularly well paying but it's a great venue that has live music every weekend so really needs congratulating on that. There's also a decent stage area so you don't have to negotiate with customers/bar staff to move chairs & tables before setting up! We'd played there back in March for the first time and according to the promoter the pub had specifically asked us back (which is always a positive). From previous experience we knew not to start before 9pm but it was the night of the CL Final and they weren't showing the footy so the place was quite empty. First set went OK but the place filled up about 10pm and we rocked the joint for the 2nd set plenty of singing along and dancing. After doing an extra long encore and packing up the van we made a point of "mingling" and got lots of good feedback from the punters and more importantly from the landlord/manager who commented on the fact that we entertained rather than just played. Hoping we'll be back there again on a regular basis!
6. I saw that and thought the same thing. However I guess if you can do that why not? I also thought that Nicky Wire looked like a tired old bloke pretending to be a rock star, but maybe that's his "thing".
7. I can highly recommend the cables that OBBM makes, he also sells on ebay http://stores.ebay.co.uk/bassic-bits They're the best quality speaker cables I've used. He's also a very nice guy, I had the pleasure of picking up one of my orders in person and having a quick chat.
8. I realised a while ago that some of the songs we play have evolved to become quite different to the originals, some by design and others by accident. For those you know take a good listen to the originals and hope that the band you're auditioning for haven't drifted too far from the recorded version.
9. Good point, but it was a spur of the moment decision to put it on the floor cos at the time we had nowhere else to put the mixer other than on top of my cab. With velcro I can stick it on more or less anywhere.
10. My solution when we decided to put the mixer on top of my cab? Just stick the amp on the floor! Considering to get some velcro tape just to make sure it doesn't fall over.
11. I wish I'd read this before buying a scratchplate off fleaby and finding out that not only is it a different shape but the screwholes don't match up either I was hoping to replace my white scratchplate with a tortoiseshell one. I guess that I'll have to stick with white unless anyone wants to do swapsies?
12. I've got a V4 that I hadn't played for a few years until I picked it up the other day. I was thinking that I should sell it, but after playing it I realised just how nice it plays. However I decided to give it a bit of a makeover so a new tortoiseshell scratch plate is on order, along with a high mass bridge and a Kiogon wiring loom. Maybe a new pickup in the not too distant future.
13. Really? I bought mine brand new and I recall paying +/- £400, maybe a little more cos I got a Fender case with it too. I'm mightily pleased to see how much it's worth, not that I'm selling mine!
14. I taught myself to play guitar using the Tune A Day book and my sisters Spanish/Classical acoustic with nylon strings. For my 16th birthday I got a very 2nd hand Vox semi-acoustic and "jammed" with some mates then after working a Saturday job I saved up and bought a shiny new Joodee Les Paul copy (from Minns Music in Nottingham) and a crappy old amp off my mates brother. As a spotty 16/17 year old I played guitar in a band with some mates from school. After that fizzled out the bass player said that he fancied playing guitar and I was interested in playing bass so we just swapped our gear over. I got an unnamed P-Bass copy in a very sparkly metal flake finish and a Laney keyboard amp. That would have been in 1984 and I'm still playing bass (and occasional guitar).
15. I know that at least one other person on this forum know of this band, Sharko will always be one of my favourites. I had the good fortune to be at this gig too!
16. I'm a fully paid up member of the Fender Appreciation Society* and my favourite basses were made in Japan and Indonesia respectively. *Not really, but I do like Fenders and Squiers
17.
I told the Mrs that I needed to strengthen my fingering technique. She suggested a Gripmaster.
I so thought that this was going to go in a different direction ... IGMC

Hi!

My personal opinion is that Sharko are one of the best bands I've ever heard, it's a shame that they don't get more recognition. I've seen Girls in Hawaii, Hollywood Pornstars and Malibu Stacy all supporting/on the same bill as Sharko. I saw Hooverphonic at a festival in Lokeren. The only 2 Belgian bands that would have love to have seen were dEUS and K's Choice
19. This is what makes Basschat such a great forum

Hi!

Hi Cedric, I've spent a lot of time in Belgium. The first time as a secondment for work and the second time I lived there for 5 years (firstly in Vilvoorde and then in Brussels (Schaarbeek). I used to go to the AB, Botanique and Cirque Royal regulary to watch bands. My favourite Belgian band by far is Sharko but I've seen Hooverphonic, Admiral Freebie, Ghinzu and the unforgettable Hank Harry (amongst others). Welcome to Basschat
21. No mention of specific strings but he has a website and Facebook page so I guess that you could ask him I saw him play with John Martyn a couple of times in the 1980's
