Euphonic Audio iAmp500 now SOLD pending.....

This is a great amp, recently discontinued by EA. Has "digital" power amp but traditional (ie heavier) power transformer. I bought it used here a few years ago, and its lived in a newer EA bag most of the time. Power is 350w into 8 ohms and 500w into 4ohms. Weighs around 13 lbs. Excellent condition, just a few light scratches on the top of the case. Its been totally reliable and trouble free. The input clip led has never worked..but I've hardly ever managed to get input distortion either! Doesn't even get warm on loud gigs - I still haven't got used to that, even after using it for a couple of years. I'm in the Bristol/Bath area and would prefer a local sale/collection, but posting isn't out of the question. Photos in the morning..... Please PM any questions etc and I'll get back as soon as I can.

Its a way of avoiding thumb position..or at least putting it off a bit! I have seen it on a few older basses (Art Pepper's bassist used to use one), but I'd imagine there is trade off with the acoustic sound, as you are losing some internal volume. Not much, but a bit.

I think Carl's basses are very interesting - in a world full of Fenders that's got to be a good thing. From what I know his motivation for making a bass was depping a gig on a Fender and being surprised at how heavy it was and how crap the balance was. I can completely understand his perspective. I'd love to try one, and I'm pretty sure I'd like it...but they are just too pricey over here. The Claypool associations are irrelevant to an old bugger like me - I'm far more impressed that the New York jazz/session players were his main customers throughout the 70's. Carl may be a bit outspoken/eccentric but I respect his work and his background.

In 20 plus years I've almost never taken a spare..even on "tours". I've carried a Sansamp for at least 15 years and used it a lot, mostly out of choice but sometimes out of necessity (very dodgy backline, no time to unload gear etc). The only problem I can remember was a Wal Probass IIE - the battery would die with very little warning. Started a song and noticed a touch of distortion...three mins later its was completely dead. The battery compartment was two screws, which is always fun on a dark stage. I expect more problems from active basses (noisy sockets, scratchy pots, worn battery connector).

Not got one, but I have played one. Nothing remarkable - just a good sounding back pickup. I'd imagine you'd get very similar results from any of the high end makers - or even the Seymour Duncan vintage jobs?

The SWR Amplite could be good - not mega powerful, but small. I sometimes use an old SWR 220 as a poweramp (no fan!) and although its a puny 160/220w on paper it usually copes no problem.

Oil is fine for a fretted maple board, but you will have to keep it clean - not difficult, just a quick clean up and re-oil every couple of months. An alternative would be Rustins plastic coating. It can be thinned down and applied like oil, but will set hard and be very moisture/dirt proof.

I went on Sat and had a good time - got to see MM play twice, and meet him and Joe Zon. Both very pleasant and happy to talk for a few mins. Also got a chance to look at the MarkBass stuff that seems so popular these days and a have a chat with their reps. And met Alun Vaughan for the second time!

I've got one of the canvas versions (from Overwater) - very nice and very protective, in fact it still looks new after about three years moderate use. Never seen the leather version "in the flesh" but I'd expect it last a few lifetimes! I'd contact Bert at Hotwire basses and see if he could do a good price on one?

Playing EUB without using your thumbs?
BassBod replied to Mottlefeeder's topic in EUB and Double Bass
A lot depends on the string height required to get a good sound from your EUB. Mine is designed and set up just like an acoustic - pretty hard work, and I can't imagine it could be played without thumb pressure on the back of the neck (and a lot of it!). However, Steinberger EUB's I've played have always had a much lower action, slimmer neck and lighter strings....more like a bass guitar. That could be a lot more successful? -
Well, the Dood did indeed. Just to add, I've got an Alembic (F2B) which is a simple re-build of a Fender Dual Showman front end - doesn't really do dirty, but it does clean so well its not true! Your bass, but musical is how I hear it. I often use mine with a Euphonic Audio head, but just as a power amp (bypassing the internal preamp). May be worth trying the Hartke head to see how you get on with the passive eq?

Yes, I do, but hopefully in a considered and honest manner! Normally it becomes clear to both parties fairly quickly - I don't see any point in taking a long time. However, I'm not technique or improvement obsessed either, and I'm happy to see students improve at their rate, in keeping with their musical ambitions and goals. That can mean very different things to different people.

Took a punt on a Squier and my thoughts are....
BassBod replied to bassatnight's topic in Bass Guitars
My CV Pbass stands up very well against the Sadowsky....I'm tempted to PJ it with a posh scratchplate, but feeling too poor, luckily. Its been up for sale for a while but I'm not at all sad it hasn't gone yet! -
Thanks for the vote of confidence there MrF. Indeed, I do teach although I'll admit I've been playing mainly EUB for the past few years (but it is designed and plays just like an acoustic, so same rules apply, unfortunately!). My acoustic currently needs some work - again.... Send me a PM?
-
What Jennifer said - but if someone can let you know the version they are thinking of it a can help a lot. Its one of those simple tunes that can get very lost because there is no shared understanding of the form - especially through the solos.
-
Only got one in my Sadowsky bass - sorry. I have got the Aguilar DB92? box - their original on-board preamp in a metal box. No DI. Allegedly designed by the same guy. Is that of any interest?

If you want some fun....try the Status black plastic flats. They look like "normal" sizes but are super flexy and twangy for a flat. Not what you'd expect at all...... Edit - forgot to say I never buy DR's from the UK!
-
DR Sunbeams are very different from Fat Beams - much smoother feel, warmer sound and lower tension (my favourite all round string - can you guess?). The R Cocco nickels are just a little bit nicer. Pyramid nickels have a slightly rougher surface texture, but are nice - although I've had a set where the low E was a bit "woofy". I personally wouldn't jump up from 35 to 45 sets - I'd go 40-100 first.
-
Overwater are good strings - but people have had problems getting them. Don't they do a lighter set than 45-100? Tension wise, I'd say they are a bit more relaxed than D'Addario, but not as flexy as DR Sunbeams. If you like light nickels, also have a look at the Thomastik jazz rounds - lovely strings, but way too light for me...
