Recently bought a fantastic gig-bag from Phil - easy transaction and great communication. Packaging was first class, and kept my four year old son playing happily for at least two hours! Got anything else under the bed??? BB

If I lived 100 miles closer I'd be there.....

Euphonic Audio - the eq really isn't complicated! Look out for a used iamp 800. I used the 500 for a few years with great results, and never felt it lacked anything - just lets your bass sound like it does.
-
I've had this on a few basses - to be honest, I wouldn't do it again. There is often a big difference in the output between series (louder and darker) and parallel (lower output brighter sound). Nothing you can't work around, but I wouldn't go drilling holes without hearing it. I prefer the series sound in most basses. Most of my experiences have been with Kent Armstrong humbuckers - J sized pickups may give better results, but I'd expect them to be pretty much the same. Edit - just realized you're talking about running a pair of pickups (single coil?) in ser/par rather than switching the internal wiring of each pickup - ignore the above!

Do any other strings compare to DR Sunbeams?
BassBod replied to cameltoe's topic in Accessories and Misc
A budget option would be Picato nickels - very nice strings for the cash. They are not quite as bouncy as Sunbeams, but sound warm and balanced. Made in South Wales and can be had on-line for a tenner. Expensive option is R.Cocco nickels - very, very similar feel and slightly brighter sound when new. Just as pricey as DR, but better prices from Thomann (as ever). -
The cab in question was/is a single ten, with a co-ax tweeter. My understanding is that the tweeter's impedance isn't as significant as the woofer. I often used a pair of them for louder gigs, hence the problem (I was driving a 2ohm load, rather than the 4ohm I expected from the cabs labelled spec) . I know that speaker impedance isn't a simple given value (varies with frequecy etc) but I was very surprised at the 4 ohm driver....and it explained why the Eden Traveler (older 400w version) complained and overheated! Good to hear the cab is now now performing again, after its dramatic weight loss - they were great cabs, but just too heavy for their size.
-
Yep - but I didn't find out until a few years later when I sold the cabs on...and one got damaged by a courier. The new owner (here on BC a few weeks ago) took the original driver out, and it was clearly labelled 4 ohm, despite the cab being marked externally as 8 ohm. I have no idea if they still do that..or why they did it (on the CXL series). I replaced the Eden with a EA500, but it was rated to run down to 2ohms anyway. Never even got warm. All I can suggest is look at the speaker inside your cab for makers info..or ask EA?

Sudden battery death in an old Wal ProIIE. Went from normal to dead in about three mins...and taking the (fragile) battery cover off needed a small screwdriver. Eden Traveler amp overheating and cutting out - I've since discovered this was because I was running it at 2ohms, as Euphonic Audio put 8ohm ratings on cabs containing 4ohm speakers. Thanks for that.

Doubt if a Fender will be a good fit, and with aluminium its harder to "fettle" a decent fit and keep it tidy. I think your best bet would be a custom maker (Jeannie in the States...or Sims?). Always worth an email to Lakland first, though?
-
Wish I hadn't seen that.
-
I'd go for the Tokai Pbass......sorry, but any Fender that heavy is (for me) a back/shoulder problem waiting to happen. Unless you can sit down for all your gigs.
-
Just saw your sig list - I use a Clifton EUB as well (Realist p/up) with the Micro, and it works really well. The only issue you might have with the EBS cabs is they suddenly seem very heavy..... For what its worth...I'm not a fan of trying to use mics for acoustic bass on gigs. Its too much hassle, even with a good front end like the Doubler.
-
I've been using the Micro for a few weeks, in a variety of settings...and I'm very impressed. But its worth remembering the full power rating is at 2 or 4 ohms, not 8 ohms. Its plenty powerful with my Barefaced Midget, and also very loud with a Bag End S15..if you need it to be. Overall tone is neutral, but in a good way and the eq is very musical. If you like to use eq for dramatic changes to the sound of your bass then you probably won't like the on board preamp alone. I love the size and (lack of) weight, and I can even forgive the fan, as it is not intrusive (even in very low volume situations).
-
Not the doubler - but have got the Micro? What do you need to know?

Stripping a nitrocellulose laquer finish.
BassBod replied to sambassman's topic in Repairs and Technical
Depends on what is under the nitro. From memory Fender re-issues have a sealer coat under the nitro paint that is a lot tougher to remove. No idea what it is, but I'd guess some sort of polyester - its thicker and much harder than the nitro paint. I'd suggest getting the nitro off fairly gently, (stripper/ scraper and wire wool?) and seeing if the clear layer underneath will give you the look you're after? -
Pro-tec or Mono Gig-Bags- Anyone use either of them?
BassBod replied to Old Horse Murphy's topic in Accessories and Misc
The ProTec is great..loads of storage space and the rigid frame is good. Not very compact, and about the same as a Hiscox hard case for weight and portability, but the ProTec is also really good for carrying as a backpack . I'd also look (on Thomman?) for the SKB shaped foam case for J basses. -

Our very own Wesley Steed recently fitted my J bass with the "original style" metal/felt mutes. Combined with Pyramid black plastic flats its almost a time travel experience - way back to the Fender Bass sound of the 60's. I'm currently using it for most of my jazz gigs, rather than EUB. The only thing is I feel the need to keep the huge bridge cover on so the felt pads don't get pulled around when its in the gig bag.
