  1. Any chance of a photo? BB
  2. From memory, this was one of the nice Precisions of the era (fenders move on the MM market) - if its a real player, ok weight and has aged well I think it'd be a good buy. You should be able to get that price down a bit...and/or some extras?. The only downside I can see is brass hardware can look awful if it gets too grubby! BB
  3. Years ago, I had an Alligator combo - something like 400w into 2x8's (made by Volt). It was remarkably good, fairly deep sound for a realatively small box, something like a GK micro combo but nicer. The fatal flaw was that it was "semi-flight" cased, so very heavy for the output. I also had an early Ashdown 4x8 - again, very nice sound (with an eden WT300) but too heavy for the the sound you got out. Things may be improving - with newer lighter speakers ths could tip the balance?? BB

    Rotosound

My experience - LaBellas are the best "thick" ones, Roto's are ok for old school, but have weird intonation..but also a certain charm. For regular guage the Status ones sound very lively and lovely on fretless, but you'll have to raise the action a bit to compensate for their flexiness. Thomastik flats (not plastic or black) are my favourite fretless string, but look 'em up before you buy, as its a bit of a love/hate string. BB
  5. Nothing boring, just a fairly specialist question. I ended up putting Thomastik flats on the Martin, everything else was too zingy. Couldn't get on with the Thomastik acoustic strings, they were too light and flexible - would've needed a completely different setup. They did sound nice, but acoustically very soft. I also put in a K&K pickup (stuck under the bridge plate - wired straight to the jack, no preamp) and this is a much more woody sound than any under-saddle pickup I've heard. I run that into a an active DI (flat) or an LR Baggs DI if a want some eq. I'm happy! But I'd love to try a Dark Star P bass with Thomastik flats..... BB
  6. Without seeing the back its hard to be sure, but I would think the Gotoh /Schaller M4 types would fit - its all down to shaft size (ooeeerr) and screw location (and again, ooeer). Might be worth looking at WD's dirt cheap section, or Brandoni (old Eko stuff might be good?). BB
  7. I had one - very good, light and surprisingly tough. Only problem was size - it fitted my Streamer, but from memory wouldn't easily fit a fender jazz. Check with Lukeward, he got mine when he got my old Streamer? BB
  8. From memory, the MM circuit "inspired" the Aguilar (as well as the Sadowsky..designed by Alex Aguilar?), but you might need to find room for two 9V batteries? I've got the older boxed version, and its great. But I would talk to John East first, about his "early MM" circuit before reaching for the soldering iron... BB
  9. Thomastik flats are great, if you can get on with the odd guages and floppy feel - I find that just moving the action up a bit makes them play really nicely. I also tried the Status black nylon wrapped strings and they are also fantastic, if a bit floppy. They certainly won't damage a soft fingerboard. BB
  10. I've seen one guitar - looked pretty good, provided you like the "fake old" thing. I've seen pics of his basses, and I don't like the necks - he seems to take all the finish off the middle of the neck and leaves it pale/unfinished. Most of the really old basses I've seen haven't worn this badly, or are dark/dirty rather than pale...but it's hard to know without seeing one for real. My guess is he leaves it barely sealed and expects to get dirty/worn from playing? BB
  11. The only negative I ever hear about Warmouth is the extra steel rods in the neck - this can make them heavier than a "standard" neck. I guess this is more noticable with a heavier exotic wood neck?? I'd love to see one of their fender necks to find out. BB
  12. Yes, but probably both ceramic or alnico - I can't remember which. BB
  13. These are used, but in perfect working order. The bridge one is a ceramic magnet (bit brighter sounding) and the neck is alnico. They sound really good for the money - I replaced them with Seymour Duncans and the difference isn't that great (!). I think these go for around £60 new, so yours for £30 for the set, posted etc. I can do photo's if anyone wants them, pm with any questions.... BB Edit - Pics added below, by request... 14. I always liked the Schaller 3D, although it needs new 3 holes. They were very popular in the 70's before you could get the Badass easily in the UK. I'm sure I've got an old one here somewhere if anyone fancies trying it out? BB
  15. Bump - reduced to £60 (posted) before evilbay..... BB
  16. Interesting bass - do you find the Warmouth neck heavy? I heard that the extra steel rods can make the neck a fair bit heavier than a trad fender? Those filter preamps..hmm BB
  17. I wouldn't bother - I think that Jaco chap had a point when he changed his for the more modern version! I don't know if the "non-resistor" variations of the the stack knob have the same output reduction, but I suspect its a trade off - interaction of the stacks vs more output. The lower output isn't a massive difference, so I wouldn't want to put you off if you think you'd prefer it. But using the same pickups I found I had to increase the amp input a notch or two. BB
  18. I find them a bit strange as well (on a fretless, shortscale). I think its just a "characteristic" of these strings. I've used other tapewounds (LaBella, Status) and not had the same experience. Its not a big problem as the sound is pretty dull anyway, you just get used to it! BB
  19. I think WD sell them (maybe not the plate?) or you can get the whole lot from basspartsresource in the states. There are a couple of wiring configurations, some also use extra resitsors to islolate the two stacks and prevent them from interacting. I went back to the three knob setup - I didn't find the two tones that useful and also found the resistors take a bit of output away, not a lot but enough to notice. BB
  20. I can use virtually any active DI box with my GK MB150E - but that has the extra "boost" gain control. If you can borrow one I'd suggest the Sadowsky preamp (new or old) or the old Fishman preamp. From what I remember both these provide a fair bit of output and should do the job? Failing that, a one rack unit preamp (SWR Grand Prix...or similar) would work so well you'll want to keep it, but is obviously a bit more cumbersome. Good luck BB
  21. Bump - reduced to £70 paypal/posted or £65 collected (Bristol, ish) BB
  22. I researched them a lot years ago - spoke to a few users etc. The outcome seemed to be that most people loved the amps and had no problems over many years. Those who had problems and managed to make contact with WW (usually in the states) were very happy with his work/turnaround time etc. There were a couple of people who had a bad time getting in contact or who were told their amp wasn't fixable (due to components being unavailable). The only person that can tell you seems to be WW himself. Another interesting thing is that he really doesn't like fitting XLR DI outputs on his amps (though I think he has sometimes?). Instead he suggests a good passive transformer style box run out of a jack output from the amp. I used to think this was cranky....but a few years later I totally agree. BB
  23. A friend of mine used one for acoustic guitar - a good unit with plenty of options. Can't vouch for its sonic quality, but Radial stuff has a good reputation (I've used one of their cheaper passive DI's for a few years with no complaints). I didn't like the fact it won't run on phantom or batts, but I guess if its the centre of an effects pedal board then that won't matter. BB
  24. He's (CK) got a point - WW has a reputation for being hard to contact, secretive of his designs etc. Some say he's great, will fix anything he's ever made..puts circuit plans inside the amp....others say he never answers the phone, scratches part numbers off componenets etc and frequently changes designs even within the same "model". If I owned one I'd make sure I made contact with him, just to see if he'd be helpful here in the UK. BB
  25. Dave Ford or Gary Alesbrook (I think he's playing keys a lot these days, band called Backyard) - both on MEEEspace...somewhere. Had a chat with Any Hague few weeks ago and he didn't sound that busy at the mo? BB
