1. There are, might back a page or two tho.. I'm gonna pull it apart this week and give it a dust out so whilst it's in bits i'll take some better ones of it's gubbins. It's great little amp, sounds awesome and is surprisingly loud.
2. I worked the Micheal Oliver stage at the Great Dorset Steam Fair. It was very interesting and nice to do something different. Here's some pix and my thoughts on the Yamaha LS9 - 32. Main power amps for the EAW boxes. Lab Gruppen 6400 and 3400 with an Ashly Protea controlling them. My work space for the week. Little bit tricky doing both monitors and FOH from this side of stage position but the little Qube monitor (bolted to the barrier) and my trusty Sennheiser HD25s helped lots. Monitor amp rack can be seen also loaded with 2 x 3400 and a Quattro for bi-amping the wedges. The device in question! Yamaha LS9-32 Lady Winwoods Maggot. An interesting Folk/Rock type outfit. Cool guys. The Drug Store Cowboys. One of the best bands I've mixed in a while. Rockabilly / Dick Dale / Country type leanings, stunning! As for the LS9.. A great bit of kit as it pretty much provides everything you're ever likely to need in 90% of situations. Flying faders, Automation, built in Graphic EQs, Multi FX units, Save and re-call facilities, Comprehensive dynamics on everyin in / out etc.. Facilities: An almost overwhelming array of options allowing a completely custom setup if required. The 'standard channel' has a four-band fully parametric EQ plus a variable hi-pass filter. There's two dynamics 'slots' which can be assigned differently for every channel but for my setup I simply chose and normal gate and a normal compressor although there's options for a de-esser, an expander amongst others. 14(?) Auxes can be be pre / post fade and the outputs of each can be routed via the 'Rack' which is a virtual rack of any of the internal processors if required. I used the 31 band graphic EQs on my monitor (Aux 1-4 - Rack 1 - 4) and three multi FX units for Short reverb, Long reverb and tap Delay. A maximum of 4 units accross 2 racks can be used. My final slot was the Flex 15 EQ for FOH which is a 31 band EQ but you can only use 15 of the bands. Sounds wierd but is actually ok to use. I'd be worried if I needed more than 15 bands. The Graphic EQs can be assigned to the faders allowing adjustments of the frequency bands per fader. Very clever! Input gain is metered in the usual way with use of the 'cue' button showing the level on the main meter although there are channel meters in LEDs on each as a peak meters fo quick reference. I could go on but I'd be here for days! One last thing to mention is lack of groups as everything is routed on 'omni-out' 15-16 which is what we'd call LR master out. Custom fader layers could be used to emulate groups but in the end I didn't bother as it added uneeded complications. Sound integrity: Not bad but not quite as 'transparent' as i might have expected from such a console. The FX and dynamics have very comprehensive controls with more than you're likely to need and work very well as does the EQ. Maybe it's the LR buss but I felt like it was all a bit 'contained' so to speak. From a sonic perspective I believe my Soundcraft to be superior. User interface: Isn't bad but simply cannot keep up with the massive facilities that the desk offers. It's often too slow to get to where's needed quickly requiring many button presses and menu flicks to get from one page area to another. The direction keys and jog-wheel next to the display are the main way around the desk. The shortcut buttons help but even so, it's still not good enough as you can choose which button goes where. This was a real ball ache to setup but helped once it was. The lack of touch screen and small display are what limit the desk and it's abilities although I understand they can be remotely setup so can be used at a distance via an Ipad which would be much better probably. The 'home' button is very handy for taking you back to which ever 'layer' (1-32, 33-64, master or custom). A stripped down M7 is the best way to compare the LS9. Conclusion: I tried all week to find some love for the Yamaha but I simply couldn't muster any. I did nearly 40 shows in 6 days but I found the interface too fiddly to get to some things, usually when I needed them! As such, I wouldn't buy one insspite of the many facilities.
3.
Newly restored cab for my "smaller" (ooooh me back) rig
Good to see a Carver still in action! Nice rig!
4. WEM used Celestions and Goodmans in those.. Usually! Being brutally honest, I'm not sure what they are, look like they belong in a '59 4x10 bassman..
5. I've tried a MarkBass rig with the twin channel 550w(?) head and two of the 4x6" + HF and it was very good. The guy who's it is is also very pleased with it after 4 years service. The speakers are capable being both loud and low and work very well but those little rigs are just not quite for me. Another friend runs two twelve inch 'Berg cabs but when I tried it, I felt something was missing. I like the characteristics of the ceramic mag TF Celestions in my Ashton 4x10, 1x15 and K15 in the Twinvalve combo. Maybe its limitations of the speakers (power compression etc) that I like in my bass guitar sound? JBL quote figures for power compression and distortion etc but not many others seem to have such an in depth spec. I couldn't say what these figures contribute to a bass guitar sound but like many others on here, I know what I like to hear. Probably same as the reasons some of us love valve amplifiers? Personally i'll stick with my big and heavy rigs for as long as I can carry 'em!
6. What we got here then? Upper pic looks to be something like a Soundcity and the lower a pre-amp of some description? More speaker changes my end, just making sure this 2225H was healthy. It was and worked fine but I've put the EV back in as it seems to work better in this compact WEM cab.

8. I'm wondering if those are Goodmans drivers? My Audiom 15-Ps have that big thick cork gasket on the front and also the edging looks similar but without the tear! Mine are rated for 50w each so I would expect those to be similar juding by the era..

Currently £12.50!
10. To be fair it will be an on going thing as such if I want to take it all somewhere else on another gig when I'm not at the Rigger then I can. Although..... I might ask my friend Stu as he's quite into this idea. Aaaarrrrgggh maybe, I don't know! Ha!
11.
As an older but cheaper alternative, the RME digi96/52 cards do 16in and out on adat,I'm using one myself to record direct from a desk with an adat card. Cost me £100 on eBay,they don't come up often though.
I'll keep an eye out for one of those as well although a MK2 motu finished at £150 the other day. Bargains all round.
12. One of the best Trace Elliot heads ever built, wish I still had mine..
13. Thanks Mr F! Sooundslike timecode is something I don't really need as there'll be no video, I'm not going that far! As for the Motu, it really does look like a proper bit of kit but I'd have to get a 2nd hand one as typical budget constraints apply. I wasn't aware of any much difference between Firewire and USB but if the concensus is to Firewire then so be it! I'd considered 16 bit / 44.1K to be a standard but if the hardware and software will run a higher sample and bit rate without fuss, I might as well take advantage. At home I have a border-line vintage setup with a SoundBlaster Audigy, oldskool Cu-Base 5 (ie pre SX), Reason 4 amongst other VSTs so mixing and recording isn't anything that new to me but the chance to do true multi-track recording in a live environment for someone is a little daunting! I don't care live as I've done it for years but this is new. I'm quite excited about all this and yes, I will be mixing the sessions and flogging them on! Extra cash for 'LIve from The Rigger'.. Excellent!
14. That looks very comprehensive, have you experience of this product, Jake? Thats the kind of thing I'm looking for tho, I like the fact it's a 'one stop shop' so to speak.. The desk is capable of generating time code, do I need this with the ADAT connections?
15. Hi guys, I need some advice as I have only a little experience in the field of recording. I'm a live engineer really but I want to have a stab and see what results I can get. The scenario: I use my 328XD as a live desk at the Rigger (quite sure I've mixed some of you guys on this forum) and it excels at this task offering plenty of control, routing options and useability. Being a digital desk, it has many digital ins outs that can be configured in many different ways for recording also. I figured that I can build a computer, buy a suitable sound card and begin to make some live recordings. The Tech: The part I'm interested in is the lightpipe / optical digital outputs. The desk has two of these outs and each can carry up to 8 channels of digital audio to a suitable recording device. These outputs can be configured to carry channels 1-8 and 9-16 pre-fade or post fade, pre or post eq, pre-or post dynamics or any combination of groups 1-8 and / or aux 1-4 and or Stereo returns and of course the master L/R bus with a max of 8 per optical out. I'd probably use channels and keep them pre everything except dynamics processing (maybe?) so any changes could be done in the software on the computer. The question and problem: The manual for the desk is very helpful, comprehensive and I would consider very good but in it's suggested configuration bit, there's nothing quite like I intend to set it up. I expect all the external products it refers to now are also out of date (like the desk I guess) but I'm sure there must be a modern product that will allow me to run it into the soundcard / computer then see those outputs on the screen of an audio sequencer / recording program - like CuBase for example? Can someone suggest such a product? Any help would be great, thanks. Matt
16. Personally, i'd go down the EQ route and hopefully that will resolve your isssue. Graphic pedals are common and cheaply available 2nd hand so if it doesn't work, well you could always sell it on.
17. I use an older style (heavy iron) Matrix amp on the HF components in my PA rig. Can't remember the model number but it does 650w ch or 1300w bridge-mono. It sounds well and we've never had any bother with it so I have every faith these new ones are also up to scratch.. +1 on Matrix.
18. If you could post a pic of the speaker I may well take it.. Cheers, Matt.
19. Used 'em for years, always worked for me.. I think the 'typical' Trace noise is heard quite clearly in the tone of Mark King's bass on (earlier?) Level 42 recordings. There's plenty of weight and depth, a distinct cut in the low-mid-mid-mid region but Mark always seems to have a little bit too much 'clank' for my liking around the 2-3Khz zone. Personally I use the pre-shape (or shape one on SMX) and on the graphic cut 1 and 2khz and apply boost at 250hz and 5k..
20. Love 'em dude! My old 4808 combo was fitted with the later 300w Clive Button power stage after it's original Bi-Polar Bear went bang. It worked pretty much flawlessly except I had to put the big fan-controlling transistor next to the fan as it used to roast and shut the board down. Never experienced any issues after..
21. I was hoping you were gonna say Cornwall as i'm heading that way in a few weeks.. Is postage an option, I'm willing to cover all costs plus a few quid to make ity worthwhile...?
