VTypeV4

I use an older style (heavy iron) Matrix amp on the HF components in my PA rig. Can't remember the model number but it does 650w ch or 1300w bridge-mono. It sounds well and we've never had any bother with it so I have every faith these new ones are also up to scratch.. +1 on Matrix.

Used 'em for years, always worked for me.. I think the 'typical' Trace noise is heard quite clearly in the tone of Mark King's bass on (earlier?) Level 42 recordings. There's plenty of weight and depth, a distinct cut in the low-mid-mid-mid region but Mark always seems to have a little bit too much 'clank' for my liking around the 2-3Khz zone. Personally I use the pre-shape (or shape one on SMX) and on the graphic cut 1 and 2khz and apply boost at 250hz and 5k..

Love 'em dude! My old 4808 combo was fitted with the later 300w Clive Button power stage after it's original Bi-Polar Bear went bang. It worked pretty much flawlessly except I had to put the big fan-controlling transistor next to the fan as it used to roast and shut the board down. Never experienced any issues after..

I got a bit messy with the epoxy but the new dome is held fast and no-one can see the cone anyways. Sounded great with a bit of heavy kick-drum dance through it! Well it seems that I might have just done it and broought it back from the brink. I'll post some pix tomorrow but after a week or so making adjustments with business cards as shims and some cheap n nasty nail polish remover on the spider that I've manged to 'pull it all over'. The problem was the former rubbing the inner pole peice as can be seen in the shim pic above. JBL state an Xmax of 7.8mm for this unit so whilst running in free air, I made a visual measurement of how far I can let the cone move before it complains. It rolled past what looked to be 15mm (ie + and - 7.5mm) without drama but approaching 20mm saw the beginnings of complaint and much beyond that, it sounded like the back plate being hammered by the voice coil former. I'm not sure what the Xmech of this driver to be but I'll assume it to be to be at least 50% greater than Xmax which would roughly tie in with the start of the unpleasnt noises. To be fair I've given the driver a 'worse than typical operations' scenario and probably won't run it as low or hard when it's loaded back into it's horn. 30Hz at around -3 dB on my Crest VS in bridge mode was where the driver began to complain. I could nearly drive it into clip above 40Hz before it got upset. So fingers crossed, I'll get some more work out it before it does anything daft again!

+1 on giving the bottles a gentle tap.. Any instabilities with the valves themselves will quickly be apparent.

The 'white' you describe is probably the bulb on the HF protection circuit lighting up. A number of companies use the light bulb as a 'leak off rail' when too much power is sent into the HF network. The excess power is soaked up and lights the bulb instead of frying your HF device.

Could be interesting.. a 2x15 with a 6 pluf HF.. it'd cover everything I'd ever need! From what I've read, they're a tough old thing being one of the premium 15 inch drivers of their day.

Modern driver technology, eh.. It's like magic! I haven't taken the step yet but my friend rob gets great results from the Markbass 4x6" cabs.. The 1x15 / bi-amp was just an example but as said, another cab would take a bit of pressure off your existing one even if the current drivers are still working within their capabilities..

Hey guys, I've just picked up a pair of these in good working order for a song.. Not sure what to use them for yet. I'm considering a hand built compact 2x15 + HF as one option. Or possibly a build a pair of Cubo 15" type subs for PA or even an oldskool compact folded horn..???? Like I said, not sure yet.. Just asking for opinions on these borderline vintage units? I'm sure they've been surpassed by modern and neo speakers, hell, even JBL themselves make the 2226H as an update.. Cheers, chaps and chapesses.

Does that GK head have a bi-amp facility? If so you could potentially get another cab to handle the lows more effectively (maybe a 1x15 with a modern long-excursion drive unit) and high-pass the 2x10 to protect the drivers whilst retaining that punch and clarity..

Average White Band: +1 on Pick up the Peices but also consider 'Person to Person' and 'Cut the Cake'.. Both still fantastic despite their age!

Cheers chaps.. To be fair, I'm not massively concerned with keeping the 'JBL sound', I just want it to be reasonably loud and low without any unpleasant 'extras' so to speak.. As stated, I don't really have anything to lose as I guess it's a case of fix or make it worse but as it currently stands it's not really serviceable anyways. The Celestion I put in the one at work has now gone through it's run in / break in period. A week of normal use saw it out performing it's partner sub loaded with PD.918. The Celestion is probably the best driver out of all three mentioned here, it's certainly the most modern and it specs very well, outstripping both others. If the JBL does need a re-cone then so be it but as stated they are a lovely looking thing and if it could go back into service, that would be great. Back-breaking indeed but we have the transport and I'm still young(ish) for the time being! Ha! And just for the record, it's not a crazy bass guitar rig, it's the foundations of a big PA.. Sorry to disappoint!
