Building a monster - 6 x 6550 200 watt amplifier
VTypeV4 replied to Mikey R's topic in Build Diaries
Can't believe I've missed this till now..! Looks like a great project, Beavis on steriods eh!? Great project, keep the pix and info rolling! -
SMX dates from 1992/3 ish to 1997/8 Depending on output power you could be looking at between £250 and £450 I reckon
+1 on that.. IME the 400w model is the pick of the bunch, wish I still had mine.

Some fantastic sstuff cropping up here, very cool indeed! -
SurfGuy13 is very knowledgeable on these things as I think he has a number of them. Hopefully he'll chime in or you could send him a PM.. I think the standard issue 15" would be a 50w Celestion g15c 'spider frame' driver which has a lovely oldskool warmth to it when driven with an appropriate amplifier.

Surely if damping factor of the speaker was entirely controlled from the amp, speaker companies wouldn't concern themselves with CMS, VAS and QMS in their T/S specs as it would all be significantly different for each and every amp?
A Trace Elliot SMX12 head has caught my eye , does anyone have any views on these ?
Absolutely great but make sure you learn how to use it properly as the big graphic and compressor can get you into trouble if they are inappropriately set. A smiley face on the will not work on this occasion. IME, these are truly one of the best pre-amps for bass guitar that has ever been built. Which power stage is it? They did a 250, 350 and 600 watt units in the grey pimple covering, the latter two having the UV strip and the later models being 300, 400 and 600w with a black facia panel and the green carpet finish. The 400 was one of the best amps I've ever owned. Hope that helps.

Hey Paul, I was gonna say I have some valves you can try but if it's gone for service not to worry.. Good luck, I'm ssure you'll have it sorted soon.

Some lovely stuff there, I especially love those old Selmer T&Bs.. -
I think it's telling you need it sounding manly rather than a big wet gay sound that are obviously trying to make it sound. So stop being a homo and grind it up
As much as you know I like my clean sound, I'm with him on this just because I can!
Try linking the send and return sockets with a patch lead. Sometimes the return socket mutes the output if not used for ages.
Had this with a V-Type 4808 combo.. IRC, it wasn't the actual socket but a dry joint that connected it to the loop board.. Good luck with it

Life long Trace Elliot user looking for change but what? please help!!!
VTypeV4 replied to big rob's topic in Amps and Cabs
Makes me wonder whether Trace will do a lightweight option? Whilst I have no desire to own a lightweight amp, I do think that Trace Elliot need to look at making such a range. So many people have moved away to various amps, not because they didn't like the sound but becuase of that heavy iron and those ceramic magnets.. Maybe a compact MP11 / Superfly type thing? -
They're awful! Ha!
-
Lovely, glad you found one!
I'm not usually that interested in valve amps...but that Twin combo looks like a very handy little amp, and in good condition (compared to lot of the TE stuff that's still around)
It's a little stunner, one of the best amps I've plugged into for years. Sounds great and is very loud given its conservative 100 or so watts rating. This example is very clean with next to no marks on the covering or grille.

I have used many Cloud power amplifiers over the years from the multi-zone CX-A series through to the utterly bomb proof CV and VTX models.. Made in Sheffield! Personally I like the idea of British made stuff and will continue to use it but in all fairness, if it's a good product fit for purpose then I'm happy to use it. That includes Chinese made Celestions..

I'm sure a bit of TLC will see it right again.. -
With the exception of the Crest power amplifier and my Ashton, every other amp in my room is made in Britain.. Leak Stereo 20: London Linear L30: Nr Leeds Beavis 50: Nr Leeds / Stoke-on-Trent Laney VC30: Cradley Heath Trace Twin Valve: Essex Most of my speakers are too. WEM cabs, 2 x 15" goodmans, 2 x 15" Celestions and a 15" HH unit. I'll not count the Celestions in my Ashton cabs as they're probably Chinese.. As are yours in your Matamp cab, Mr Harris.. By the way, you MUST come and have a go of this Twin Valve, it'll blow your socks off!

Some better pix.. I A / B against the Ashton the other day and found the results very interesting. The Trace has a lovely hollow / transparent thing going on whereas the Ashton is altogether 'thicker' and probably a bit more real world but which do I prefer? I'm not sure! Looks like I'll keep the Ashton and buy the Trace and have the best of both worlds!

Behringer is crap! - is it? do we give labels too much weight?
VTypeV4 replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
CS800.. Legendary! I ran a CS1200X for a while too.. I'd be more inclined to run with a Peavey amplifier inspite of their weight. I've never had one die or fail. They can seem a bit 'underated' ie not as loud as one might percieve x amount of watts to be but they're reasonably inexpensive second hand. New ones are probably even better like the IPR series which are mega light and the PV series are the same as the budget model Crest as the two companies are now associated.. I've nothing against the Behringer amps but I've had plenty of experience with Peavey over the years. -
Thought I'd put the lesser spotted Twin Valve on here.. It's a purchase I'm considering..
Haha I know Not to mention you'd have had control over the overall sound anyway! And actually I partly disagree! Pretty much any bass tone can work in metal.. But a metal tone will sound crap in pretty much any other genre
Ha, Indeed I would! It's all good dude, hope you have a good'un at Mr Chapmans establishment on the 30th.. -
Are you saying I have a crap sound???
Not at all, I'd say if I thought so, I'd not beat around the bush, you have met me! Ha! Your sound works well with material you play, very much 'fit for purpose' within the rock / metal genre. My personal tastes are much more modern jazz / funk so our individual sounds probably aren't cross-compatible anyways..
