1. Would you be interested in a trade for a 600smx? Also where are you based?
2. Fair enough but I'm not looking to sell really, so much as do swap speaker for speaker.. In line with forum rules.. EVM-15L £100 Jensen £60 EV SP12 £80
3. I've got some classic speakers but they're all a bit mis-matched so I was hoping maybe someone has a similar unit and we could do an exchange..? Ideally, I'm after getting rid of the Jensen and exchanging it for either another EV SP12 or another EVM-15L although I'm open to offers to trades. I'm not really wanting to sell any of the drive units outright although everything has it's price. Anyways, these are the speakers. They're all in good working order with no issues. This is a 15" Electro Voice EVM-15L. I know it doesn't look like one but it is and I have documentation that supports my claim. Originally it was an original spec 60w SRO-15L but blew many years back and was re-coned as an EVM-15L in 1980 by a company down south. It's probably the old spec EVM-15L which was rated for 200w rather than the later spec'd series two or Proline models which boast 400w. I believe it's never been used and has sat in it's box for the last 30 years. EVM-15L SRO-15L 15" 200w 8 ohms My old Alnico Jensen that I've only ever used to make sure it works. It has the American 'Radio Shack' sticker on the back but the frame and magnet are unmistakably Jensen. The driver has the old-school metal dust cap which might make it good for the lap-steel type sound. Alnico Jensen 12" 20w (a guestimate) 8 ohms (if I remember correctly but will double check) Classic dual-concentric driver from the early 1960s. The alnico magnet on this beast weighs a ton and the over built theme runs right through all aspects of this unit. Apparently they were designed more as a hi-fi / reference speaker rather than a guitar or bass application. This speaker is highly efficient with a clean and smooth extended response up to 13kHz. Gotta love those old whizzer cones! EV SP12 12" 15w / 30w / 60w (EV spec'd a number of ratings on this driver) 8 ohms. Any comments or ideas for exchange are welcome. Cheers!
4.
Where valves are concerned keeping them cool isn't of any benefit, keeping the heat they create out of the other components is.
Still odd tho as all the components with the exception of the mains transformer, output transformer and supply choke are buried below the chassis. Even those on top are sited away from the valves. Either way, I guess the designers thought it to be a required part of the amp. If it makes it last longer then thats peice of mind for me.
5. Go on then, I'll do my best.. Beavis: 60w valve amp built by my step-dad in the mid '90s driving two Goodmans loaded WEM 1x15s (still got all of that) Trace Elliot Boxer 30: Traded for a Shaftesbury Les Paul copy Trace Elliot 712 SMC: Great amp especially with the 2103H 2x10 extention cab Trace Elliot AH300 SM: The 712 was traded for this amp. Trace Elliot AH300 SMX: Bought this outright with a view to selling the SM. Had an 1153 1x15 in addition to the 2103H too. Trace Elliot RAH600 SMX: Thought I'd try the 'big one' along with a 1048H. Sold the SM and 2103H. (still got the 600) Trace Elliot V-Type 4808: Heavy but awesome. Swapped it for the 300SMX. Trace Elliot V4 Mk2: I was looking for a change of sound so a retrogressive step was the way forward. .Later had the matching 1084 8x10 and that was monsterous! Trace Elliot AH400SMX: Probably the best graphic series amps they made. Trace Elliot 715 - 7: It came up cheap and had plenty of poke for it's size. Ashton BV300H: A gem of an amplifier. I still have Beavis (6550 powered Linear L50/Marshall hybrid) and cabs but damaged one of the Goodmans and replaced it with an HH driver so I could just use one cab. Currently building a 2x12 with some electrovoice drivers so I can re-cone and re-install the goodmans drive unit. I've owned and sold the 600SMX a few times but it's a superb peice of kit. Great with Trace 4x10 and 1x15 cabs. I think the 4808 belongs to someone on here, Longtimefred sold it on here a while back. The Peavey 4x10 went when I got the 810 and when that went had an Ashdown 210 for the V4 to drive. Shouldn't have sold the 400SMX, a truly excellent amp. Loving my Ashton tho, I'll be keeping this one, it's top drawer!
6.
Not figured why that has a fan, it doesn't run the valves hot or packed silly close together.
Thats what I thought although I have seen versions with the fan mounted vertically blowing/sucking(?) at the valves in a Trace Elliot V-Type kinda way..
7. The fan on my Ashton is rather loud which can be a little distracting in a quiet environment. I expect I could unplug it if needed as there's vents above the power valves and both front and rear. As for passive cooling, a block of solid aluminium which acts as a heat sink will probably cost more than a cheap fan made in their millions in china or wherever.
8. I have said it before but I wouldn't swap mine as it performs right on the money everytime.
9. Most speakers move forward (ie away from the magnet) when a positive voltage is applied to its + terminal. There are exceptons, I believe JBL may well be one of them. As long as you now all the speakers in your rig are all moving in the same direction, you'll be Ok. Just out of interest, what speaker is it?
10.
That's very true. I do find that the experience is very different since I have been a session musician over the past few years. I get paid to deliver exactly what the producer or song writer wants and I have less of a say into what goes down. I have to be much more flexible and agreeable. Bringing kit along that helps me to that is invaluable. But, despite my best efforts to bring along quality kit along to the job sometimes the producer wants me use the house amps or basses. Not very often thank goodness, but I have met a couple of producers that are set set in their ways and don't allow very much room for manoeuvre. Going back to the conversation about Warwick bass tone... One of the main reasons why I played nothing but Warwick years ago is because I got great feedback from FOH engineers about how well the tone balanced on the desk and how well it projected in the mix. As most of my time back was spent on stage rather than the studio it was a logical and very rewarding switch. Mmmmmm...happy days!
Definately a +1 from this FOH engineer!
11. From a live engineering point of view, you should always have a few different 'tools in the bag' to help make things fit together. That is the ultimate goal for a great mix. Everything should be individual and distinct as well as the mix soundling integral at the same time. I know that sounds like waffle but its kept me going for many years.. Personally, I love it when a group comes in and the bass player has a Warwick because I know there's a good chance I can make it fit* even if the sounds of the kit and other instruments aren't great. They're as easy to smooth out as they are gnarl up, whatever the situation calls for. * As long, of course the guy/girl can actually play the thing! Had to get that in, Warwicks are good but they don't have extra talent inside them!
12. I love my LX5 as it punches through a mix, looks great and is exceptionally versatile. As for sounds, the videos say it all. Highly recommended!
13. Cloud CV and VTX series amplifiers tend to go reasonably cheaply on eBay.. Not the highest power amps out there but very well built (in Sheffield) and will take a kickin night after night. Both have built in limiters, comprehensive protection circuitry as well as dual mono and bridge mono modes. Cloud are a great company to deal with. CV series operate down to 4 ohms ch / 8 ohms bridge. They usually come in black cases and are std 19" 3U rack size. 250 - 1000w VTX series will sustain 2 ohms ch / 4 ohm bridge. These are grey coloured and are higher powered than the CV range. Up to 1500w (I think?) Only downside is that they weigh a bit. Plenty of iron in a transformer is a good thing in my book.
14. You won't go far wrong with QSC RMX/PLX series, even if they are second hand.. I prefer Crown but than kinda flys in the face of cheap.. Having said that, a Crown will (should!) last a very long time..
15.
http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1728315 And Orange Smart power ones, half the power you put in is sunk into a speaker performing the function the back of the other speaker would otherwise perform.
The joys of Isobaric setups. Great comment, made me chuckle cuz its essentially true, thanks.
16.
That's just it. Horses for courses. To me Warwicks look like perfectly good basses but with a dildo for an upper horn. Hey fine when your comfortable with your own sexuality like.
I am indeed, cheers man!
17. With reference to the post topic, I don't understand them either.. I'd have one to hang on a wall cuz they do look cool if not a bit arkward but most certainly not to play. Sorry guys, can't stand 'em on both their sound or the way they feel. I'm not saying they're a bad bass, I'm sure many people enjoy their quirky character but not for me. I'll stick to my Warwick thanks
18. Sman1992.. Take time to learn your controls and how they interact with your bass and speaker combinations. It will put you in good stead for if you fancy a change of sound, get a different bass or find yourself in a tricky acoustic space where your 'usual' settings just don't seem to be working. Plus, if you get a new amp in the future then at least some of the controls will be familiar and you'll understand it better straight away. Don't become ignorant to it, learning how to use the amps features are (almost) as important as playing the bass itself. I deal with lots of people who don't have a clue about their amp and treat it as magical voodoo of which they don't understand. As a result they occasionally have an inappropriate or bad sound. Maybe you could tell us what amp you have and we could help you further?
19. Thata the one. Theres this one too.. http://www.chambonino.com/construct/const9.html I think he'd have buy an industrial fan to cool it and a truck to move this one? Not sure its a 'practical' proposition.. It is one of the coolest things i've seen in a good long while..
20. It was pretty cool tho.. Has anyone else seen the John Chambers amp? That thing is a work of art, makes SVT, BV, VBA, V-Type etc look like dinky toys..
21. Like 'em or lump 'em they're clever guys, check their hostories.. Personally I think they're great but would love them to revisit that 'myth' with a better built drive unit that doesn't exceed its xmech or shake itself to bits..
22. Did anyone see the Mythbusters 'Subwoofer in a car' episode? Wasn't it 162 dB at 12Hz or such similar? Devastating! I'd love to try the John Chambers 1000w valve amp too!
23. It's been a while so I'll give it another bumpy bump..
24.
BIGGER
Wow!
25. The daftest (really wished I had the photo!) was with the 600SMX in Bi-amp mode. On the low side.. 1 x Martin Audio 1x18" sub 1x Trace 1153 1x15" And the high.. 1 x Trace 1048H 4x10" 1 x Trace 2103H 2x10" That was truly monsterous and entirely ridiculous!
