1. In 2004 had the fortune of having a MIJ '75 re-issue and it was a great bass. I paid £400 for it and sold it about 12 months later in a part-ex for a 5-string Jazz Bass Plus (the one with the kubicki and lace sensor bits) and got about the same back for it. Later in 2006 i had to down grade my 4-string Jazz Bass Deluxe (cuz I broke my wrist when I threw my Suzuki at the road!) and wound up buying a Japenese Marcus Miller signature. I bought it £450 and was happy with it at first as its sounded great by itself but I really couldn't get it push its way through a band mix so six months later moved it on for £420. I bought a passive US Jazz bass after it had gone. Fast forward to late 2011 and both of these basses are doing silly money on eBay now. People are regularly asking £750 and there's a 'Miller signature for £900 on currently! I know some (if not all?) of the new ones are US basses but the Japenese ones are pulling the same monies. Did I miss something somewhere?
2.
I was using Peavey from the late 80s until around 2005 - same combo & it never let me down. I couldn't care less what haters say about gear (Rotosound strings get knocked sometimes & then there is the anti-Fender brigade). Live & let live, I say. It'd be boring if we were all the same
I quite agree..
3. I've no bones with Peavey stuff. I loved the 410TVX that I had for a while, only sold it cuz a friend was desparate for a cab! I would have another. I've used countless Peavey PA systems and as long they're not running Peavey amps and have had time being setup are great, plenty of bang for buck! The amps are good for monitors as they have DDT so they can be thrashed without too much consideration. I always thought they sounded a little 'stifled' for FOH use and Peavey watts arent quite Crown/Crest watts are they!? I've replaced a few Black Widows over the years in both bass guitar and PA cabs and most simply been a damaged tinsel/lead lines. I've repaired our HiSys 4 drum fill a few times because of this fault. It does work hard, its bi-amped on a Crown 24x6. I did replace some 18" examples that had nearly been on fire that had been fried by a heavily clipped JBL MPX1200. Having said that, as long as they're not abused (like most speakers) work well without incident. I like 'Widows, they're certainly not a bad driver. Long live Peavey gear, I have plenty of respect for it.
4. I'm not familiar with the Eden range of kit. A friend used to have a 2 x 12 cab but I have no idea about any valve amps that they may or may have not made. I think its ace tho!
5. Might know someone who could be interested. They're not my thing really but if my friend is, I'll post on here.
6.
tinny - thin and metallic in sound; lacking resonance
Still hate it man, still hate it.
7. Thats a sweet looking CX man, real sweet.. You opened the door now so here's some pix you may like Mr D. My '87 FJ currently about 2/3 of its way through a complete rebuild and modification. Note its sat on FZR1000 wheels and suspension. The frame has been powder coated and the engine has Wiseco High comp pistons in. Should be a flyer when its done! I took it to Nurburgring back in 2009; its great upsetting sports bikes on an 'old tourer' ha! 1980 CX 500 A that used to belong to my dad. I haven't told him I've got it. I love riding this bike and I consider myself very lucky for it to be still in great condition after 31 years. Love it! And finally my daily rider. This 1992 Fj gets used all day everyday as I don't drive a car. Its a solid bike which inspite of being nearly 20 years old and having 72k on the clock is still quick, comfy and reliable. The pic is in France at the Milau Bridge last year.
8. My '01 Streamer LX5 has the gold writing (well, it did when it was new!) MEC twin jazz setup. I'm still pleased with them as they're quiet in operation, have a healthy output and perform nicely. The EQ facility (top and bottom) is more than adequate too, I use it reasonably flat, more for just the finishing touches really. The best sounding Warwick I heard was a Streamer Stage one which had a set of Bartolini's in. Very very smooth and very tight especially on the bottom B. Mine sounds great but that one certainly out performed it.
9. I always wind up being guilty of cross forum contamination.. I talk about pro audio and bass on my Yamaha FJ and Honda CX forums I talk about Yamaha FJs and Honda CXs on the bass and Carver forum I talk about Honda CXs on the FJ Forum and FJs on the CX forum I talk about bass on the Carver forum I think you get the idea! Guilty as charged..
10. Sounds like fun! Its what I like about the CX, plenty of personality (not sure 'attitude' is the right term for the CX!) and identity. Love the slight burble and chuff from its exhausts..
11. Thats truly an oldschool bit of kit, lovely tho..Bet they're worth a pretty penny these days. FJs are mint, they're just getting a little old now.. Wouldn't be without one tho!
12. I don't think they are, made anymore. You can still get the manual for them but that seems to be about it. It'd be nice to get some service data too as the bias is adjustable on the back with a multimeter. I did read somewhere that they were marketed as a FAME BV300 elesewhere for a while. I also read that they a re-hashed Eden amp too but I can't find an eden anything like..
13. KH 250: Legendary smoker, sweet man! Triumph 21: Never heard of that model, sorry. Honda CX500: Used to belong to my dad, I managed to find it 15 years after he sold it. He doesn't know I have it yet, Ha! Great bike in an old school steady kinda way. Very charming indeed! GSX600F: My first bike. I thrashed the nuts off it and dropped it a couple of times. Very solid and reliable. VFR800: A few friends have had these, a quick and capable bike with legendary honda reliabilty. V-Tec or none, both great bikes. Shame yours have gone dude. I sold loads of bass stuff including a Status to get into bikes. And my personal weapon of choice: FJ1200: I like 'em so much, I have two!
14. I wouldn't swap my Streamer LX5 for a Spector or anything else for that matter..
15.
Interesting budget valve amp tip off!
It seems to be quite well made (well, from the outside at least), the transformers are reasonably large and quite heavy, it has Electroharmonix branded valves in, the wood work and upholstery are to a good standard, the finish on the brushed control panel is nicely done etc. My only minor criticism so far that the fan is a little noisy in operation. I tried it in the shop and had to have it. A jazz bass sounds great through it, even better with my NE1 (I don't like 1k6-2k5 in my program) unit in front. My Warwick is always my reference and that plus the NE1 with both cabs is stunning. I just hope its something like reliable. So far so good.
16. Cheers man. I'm surprised will hasn't seen this yet..
17.
Tinny - a term that describes a tone or sound with too much top end, and not enough weight. Does that help? I almost asked you to pop out to the car the other night to help me work out why my stereo sounds 'boxey'
Paul, you couldn't help it could you? I hate that term.. Ha! I can live with 'thin', 'harsh', 'sharp' etc and even 'boxy' and 'meaty' but not that one..
18. Hey Paul, All good man, just learning my way round this forum! Cheers
19. One that musicians and none muso (but not engineers) types use: 'It sounds a bit tinny' That bugs the hell out of me.. Tinny? What!? Use your words to decrible what you're hearing. Last time i looked, a tin makes no sound at all unless struck and even then.. Stupid term and none descriptive!
20. Cheers for the positivity guys, its appreciated. I love my Korg MS20, its a truly wonderful bit of kit. I've used it loads of times on recordings over the years and it delivers everytime. I love and don't think I'd ever sell it. I used to play it in a band when I was 17 with an old RockTech delay pedal and an Electric Mistress flanger. Massive and silly indeed! My computer is borderline vintage too! It used to be an XP2000+ but it recently blew up so I upgraded it.. To an XP2500+! High speed stuff! It does have enough power for what I use it for tho. With regards to the Ashton setup: I too could find next to nothing about it on the net either, there is a discussion about it on another forum but even that doesn't say too much. Truth is, I haven't had it that long and haven't gigged it yet but I'm still very pleased with it on all fronts. It has a very clean 'valve' type sound, its a bit more mid-biased than the V-Type Trace Elliot I was used to but that helps note definition. Its not as agressive as the Ampeg pre-amp but probably sits between the Ampeg and Trace sound. I'll write a full review in another topic section when I've had it a little longer but for the time being, i'm very pleased with it. Especially when the full stack in the pic only cost £500! Bargain..
21. There is a breif description of what is what on my introduction topic however, I've put pictures on here and will write a description of each item. Pix First.. My long serving but currently ill PT2400. This amplifier has earned me lots of money and has provided many years of reliable and great sounding service. I'll be putting it right very soon thanks to Bob Carver himself. This amp, Beavis was built by my step dad about 15 years ago. Its main components are Linear L50 items but its based on a 50w Marshall circuit. It has a diode rectifier in place of the GZ34 in the Linear circuit and the EL34 valves of the Marshall circuit were changed for Tung Sol 6550s for more clean, linear power. The Bias circuit was modded to accomodate the bigger valves. It now makes 62w just before clipping. This is a great amp, it works with everything. This was purchased along with 3 other VS650s that were sold off when a club closed locally. I paid £100 for all three, although one did have to go for repair. I sold two on and kept this one and put super bright LEDs in it. I like Crest amplifiers and even this pro market buget model has great HiFi qualities. I got this from a friend about 7-8 years ago who was retiring from bass playing. He'd bought it all new in the 1960s, built the cabs and the casing for the amplifier and kept it this neat and tidy for all these years. I have the original goodmans paperwork for the speakers and the Linear circuit diagram. This amp has apparently played the Albert Hall. I love the look of these old 1x15" WEM cabs. The one on the left still has the original Goodmans Audiom P15D 50w driver in it. This is driven by the Crest amplifier as a sub. The one on the right has an HH driver and is driven full range by Beavis. The driver is quite efficient and sounds quite sweet. This is an overview of my listening room/studio. My synthesizers are quite close to my heart, especially the MS20. My Long serving Warwick Streamer LX5. Its a very early 2001 model and has been everywhere with me. It was bought new when I was 18 and I'm still as happy with it today as I was back then. I've only recently finished the last of the body/bees wax that came with it from the factory. The tall and imposing! I love this setup, It's the first amp I've used that will do the sound I want that doesn't say Trace Elliot on it. Its an Ashton BV300H (6 x KT88) 300w all valve head and the cabs are the matching Celestion loaded 4 x 10 and 1 x 15.. And the Les Paul in the second pic isn't a real one, its a Hondo II. Hope this has been of interest, Matt
22. Hey guys, I've been pointed to this forum by a good friend who has been on here for a long time. I'm sure he'll make himself known when he sees this! I'm Matt and work as a pro sound engineer at a local venue and as a part time motorcycle instructor. I used to be semi pro with the bass but I'm not even in a band these days -something I must remedy- but still play at home and dep for gigs as and when. I started playing at 15 back in 1998 when still at school. No-one else at the time would volunteer and since I had a bass at home that belonged to my stepdad, I had thought, what can possibly go wrong? My preferred style is very much of the acid/funk/groove line, I love it. Old stuff such as Stanley Clarke's 'School Days' and AWB's 'Cut the Cake' right through to modern stuff such my favourite band, Jamiroquai. If I had to compare myself to anyone, it would be Nick Fyffe. I have played in many bands up and down the country, including a 10-peice soul/motown outfit, a 6-peice '70s Disco group, a seven-peice Cajun swamp n roll band etc etc. With regards to equipment, I mainly play a 5-string Warwick Streamer LX that I had new many years ago. I still love that guitar. I also have a soft spot for Jazz basses too, I've had loads of them! When it comes to amps, I've been a life long Trace Elliot fan up until very recently and I've had virtually one of everything they've ever made! Although I no longer have any, I still love it. I now have and Ashton All valve rig. I'll post some pix in the other reletave sections, Cheers.
