also had a bash of one of these today with Mr vtypev4. cracking amp, shame it was through crashdown cabs as they sound rather cheap and cheerful and not much life to them. I think my version of dirty must be a lot different as I found it only got dirty when the drive was at around 2 o clock. plenty of useable clean but if you are after sterile clean then I wouldn't buy this. I'm positive a 500w version is enough for most of us.
Yeah Man!
My Trace Elliot stack: V6 1048h + 1518c Love the sound I get from this setup, I've had the V6 around 5 years but it was sat around for ages in a cupboard as the valves went about 4 years ago and I couldn't afford to get it sorted but have recently got her back up and running and I have got the best tone I have ever had!
Got some pix of the big beast dude?

I've just tried one of these things, the 500w model.. Massive amount of horsepower!
-
500w vs 1000w equals 3dB: Not a massive amount.. All other things being equal of course. And seriously, where would 1kW not be adequate? Let alone 500w even for pushing fundamentals in a dub band..

Trace Elliot V-Type 4808 Combo SOLD....

I've managed to fix a few Peavey Black Widows over the years but these have been mainly 15" and 18" units.. Good luck with the fix, your plans to shim it as you're going sound like to key to an effective repair as the gap between magnet and voice coil are very slim!

2/3 of my old rig pictured above! Hopefully that V4 is coming back to live with me.. I love it! Anyone wanting a near brand new 300w Ashton Stack!? I've long been a fan of Trace Elliot stuff but that V4 is quite spectacular when its on song. It was great when I used to own the matching 1084 (8x10) but in all fairness, it works well through anything including the Crashdown 2x10 but did give it a good kicking! This one seems to work best with the re-issue TungSol 6550 output valves, they seem to have a liitle more definition than the stock Shuguang KT88 (re-branded to Ruby Tubes) although there seems to be little difference in horsepower or point of breakup between the two.. Nothing wrong with Peavy stuff, dude.. It does take a little time to get it setup and to pull the best out of it but bang for buck and indestructability, you'll struggle to find better.. They've been making the XR series of powered mixers for the best part of thirty years so I expect the newer stereo ones are with built in FX are pretty comprehensive.

How to get a crunchy sound out of a marshall JCM800?
VTypeV4 replied to phoenix555's topic in Amps and Cabs
I thought Marshalls and EL34s were the byword for crunch.. -
If you decide on which drivers to use, send me a msg and I will design the cab using some software I have if you want..?

Bias / Service info for Ashton/Fame/Smarvo/Eden BV300H..
VTypeV4 replied to VTypeV4's topic in Amps and Cabs
There's just not much info about them at all is there.. I borrowed the Trace V4 Mk2 back from Will (Longtimefred) so the Ashton can have a rest for a bit. It's a lovely amplifier and yes, I do miss it! -
I thought I'd check the Bias on my Ashton BV and it was a bit all over the place but having no service data, I put it in the middle of the extremes.. One was as high as 48mV and the lowest was 28mV so I've set them at 35.5mV but haven't had chance to run it up loud yet. The anodes weren't glowing so I'm assuming all is well.. I did read on talk bass that one chap had set his at 25mV but another had set his much higher at 45 mV.. I appreciate that these are reference voltages and not the actual neg voltage applied to the grids however anyone with any data or info would be appreciated.. Cheers, Matt

Sennheiser HD25 still sound pretty good to me..

Many thanks Mr M!

How many times have you been to see a band and thought 'these guys are great but it doesn't sound good in here' ? You wouldn't want that to be you now.. If you wouldn't skimp on your bass gear then don't on PA stuff either. Much like bass gear, inexpensive stuff can work well as long as it's correctly setup. I appreciate most of us can't afford 20 thousand watts of EAW or Turbo Sound stuff but the suggestions as mentioned above and even Peavey stuff will see you well.

Sweet, many thanks Mr M! I like the idea of having different EQ options for monitors for the 'same' channel as such, very handy! Not something I'm used to on my good old GL3000! The idea of having EQs on all the outputs sounds great too, different master EQs for different groups? Brilliant! Using a jog wheel and display aren't a problem for EQ, comp and gate controls. As long as I remember how to get into them of course! I have no problem with spending time with the thing making sure I know how and where things are. I'll do this before I take it out on the road. In all fairness, I'm looking forward to the learning curve! Nights of the faders flying into position? The Mrs will murder me! I can live with running a few dB down, its what I do with my Allen & Grief and the Mackies anyway, I like 0dBu to really be plus 3 to plus six so I know that 0 is flat out and beyond it is into limiters. I don't like red lights, they only ever mean bad things! And I'm guessing (I can't find a good pic) that -18dBFS is reference and 0 is clip like the soundcraft is? Either way, its not an issue. With regards to the software, I can put it on my laptop however, I'd rather get used to doing it all on the desk just in case I don't have it with me. Sounds handy like you say, just to keep an eye on stuff during a show. I can't seem to find any bad words against them, I'm guessing any teething troubles, Yamaha ironed out early on. Most of the desks out there seem to have the version two software which looks to have a number of useful improvements. Lastly, those flying faders can never get dull can they? Ha!

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/photobucket-fixer/ IF YOU'RE USING MOOZILLA FIREFOX THEN USE THE ABOVE FIX TO RESTORE IMAGES - SIMIILAR ADD-ONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR OTHER BROWSERS. I've been a pro live sound engineer for more than ten years and have used many an analogue desk working in venues and for various pro-audio companies. However.. Inspite of this experience, I've always worked for someone else using their system and their desk. All of these have been analogue desks from dinky 8 channel Mackie and Spirit boards up to Soundcraft Series Two and Allen & Grief ML5000s. I want my own desk! I have used a Mackie D8B which was OK but I just didn't quite love it. I also tried a Soundcraft 328XD which was very easy to use but I've read these have a number of issues. Which leaves me with Yamaha. I have no problems Yam stuff, The analogue desks are fine as are the outboard rack units, power amps, speakers etc. Oh and the bikes are quite good too! I'm looking to invest about £700 into a 'sorted' 02R as it looks to suit my requirements and if I decide that digital isn't for me, it can go back on eBay..! Any peeps have experience with the 02R as a live mixing console?

So expensive These Days? MIJ '75 R/I & 'Miller Sig Basses
VTypeV4 replied to VTypeV4's topic in Bass Guitars
Interesting observations there gents.. Maybe Fender are just being greedy? But in all fairness, they wouldn't be the first.. Paul, I know you'll never sell yours! Especially cuz whats on the back of the headstock! -
In 2004 had the fortune of having a MIJ '75 re-issue and it was a great bass. I paid £400 for it and sold it about 12 months later in a part-ex for a 5-string Jazz Bass Plus (the one with the kubicki and lace sensor bits) and got about the same back for it. Later in 2006 i had to down grade my 4-string Jazz Bass Deluxe (cuz I broke my wrist when I threw my Suzuki at the road!) and wound up buying a Japenese Marcus Miller signature. I bought it £450 and was happy with it at first as its sounded great by itself but I really couldn't get it push its way through a band mix so six months later moved it on for £420. I bought a passive US Jazz bass after it had gone. Fast forward to late 2011 and both of these basses are doing silly money on eBay now. People are regularly asking £750 and there's a 'Miller signature for £900 on currently! I know some (if not all?) of the new ones are US basses but the Japenese ones are pulling the same monies. Did I miss something somewhere?
I was using Peavey from the late 80s until around 2005 - same combo & it never let me down. I couldn't care less what haters say about gear (Rotosound strings get knocked sometimes & then there is the anti-Fender brigade). Live & let live, I say. It'd be boring if we were all the same
I quite agree..

I've no bones with Peavey stuff. I loved the 410TVX that I had for a while, only sold it cuz a friend was desparate for a cab! I would have another. I've used countless Peavey PA systems and as long they're not running Peavey amps and have had time being setup are great, plenty of bang for buck! The amps are good for monitors as they have DDT so they can be thrashed without too much consideration. I always thought they sounded a little 'stifled' for FOH use and Peavey watts arent quite Crown/Crest watts are they!? I've replaced a few Black Widows over the years in both bass guitar and PA cabs and most simply been a damaged tinsel/lead lines. I've repaired our HiSys 4 drum fill a few times because of this fault. It does work hard, its bi-amped on a Crown 24x6. I did replace some 18" examples that had nearly been on fire that had been fried by a heavily clipped JBL MPX1200. Having said that, as long as they're not abused (like most speakers) work well without incident. I like 'Widows, they're certainly not a bad driver. Long live Peavey gear, I have plenty of respect for it.

My '01 Streamer LX5..

I'm not familiar with the Eden range of kit. A friend used to have a 2 x 12 cab but I have no idea about any valve amps that they may or may have not made. I think its ace tho!
