1. It is indeed. looks lovely doesn't it! I think its the old Hiwatt syndrome; Built to last so it didn't break so nobody bought new ones..
2. Any suggestions? I know what it is, do you guys?
3. Thought some pix of big and warm valviness might tempt..
4. I don't see why not.. Just remember any EQ and/or compression applied to the bass will also be on the drums...
5.
great sounding amp this. real gutsy clean valve amp. the cabs are surprisingly punchy as well. bargain
Ta Dude!
6. I love this one.. Just love the Trace V4 MK2 more!
7. Due to a slightly surprising opportunity to get my hands back on my old (and much loved) Trace Elliot V4 MK2, I have decided to see if anyone is interested getting a big all valve stack on the cheap.. All items in great condition. Inspection and trial welcome. 8.
also had a bash of one of these today with Mr vtypev4. cracking amp, shame it was through crashdown cabs as they sound rather cheap and cheerful and not much life to them. I think my version of dirty must be a lot different as I found it only got dirty when the drive was at around 2 o clock. plenty of useable clean but if you are after sterile clean then I wouldn't buy this. I'm positive a 500w version is enough for most of us.
Yeah Man!
9.
My Trace Elliot stack: V6 1048h + 1518c Love the sound I get from this setup, I've had the V6 around 5 years but it was sat around for ages in a cupboard as the valves went about 4 years ago and I couldn't afford to get it sorted but have recently got her back up and running and I have got the best tone I have ever had!
Got some pix of the big beast dude?
10. I've just tried one of these things, the 500w model.. Massive amount of horsepower!
11. 500w vs 1000w equals 3dB: Not a massive amount.. All other things being equal of course. And seriously, where would 1kW not be adequate? Let alone 500w even for pushing fundamentals in a dub band..
12. I've managed to fix a few Peavey Black Widows over the years but these have been mainly 15" and 18" units.. Good luck with the fix, your plans to shim it as you're going sound like to key to an effective repair as the gap between magnet and voice coil are very slim!
13. 2/3 of my old rig pictured above! Hopefully that V4 is coming back to live with me.. I love it! Anyone wanting a near brand new 300w Ashton Stack!? I've long been a fan of Trace Elliot stuff but that V4 is quite spectacular when its on song. It was great when I used to own the matching 1084 (8x10) but in all fairness, it works well through anything including the Crashdown 2x10 but did give it a good kicking! This one seems to work best with the re-issue TungSol 6550 output valves, they seem to have a liitle more definition than the stock Shuguang KT88 (re-branded to Ruby Tubes) although there seems to be little difference in horsepower or point of breakup between the two.. PA Systems

Nothing wrong with Peavy stuff, dude.. It does take a little time to get it setup and to pull the best out of it but bang for buck and indestructability, you'll struggle to find better.. They've been making the XR series of powered mixers for the best part of thirty years so I expect the newer stereo ones are with built in FX are pretty comprehensive.
15. I thought Marshalls and EL34s were the byword for crunch..
16. If you decide on which drivers to use, send me a msg and I will design the cab using some software I have if you want..?
17. There's just not much info about them at all is there.. I borrowed the Trace V4 Mk2 back from Will (Longtimefred) so the Ashton can have a rest for a bit. It's a lovely amplifier and yes, I do miss it!
18. I thought I'd check the Bias on my Ashton BV and it was a bit all over the place but having no service data, I put it in the middle of the extremes.. One was as high as 48mV and the lowest was 28mV so I've set them at 35.5mV but haven't had chance to run it up loud yet. The anodes weren't glowing so I'm assuming all is well.. I did read on talk bass that one chap had set his at 25mV but another had set his much higher at 45 mV.. I appreciate that these are reference voltages and not the actual neg voltage applied to the grids however anyone with any data or info would be appreciated.. Cheers, Matt
19. Sennheiser HD25 still sound pretty good to me..
20. How many times have you been to see a band and thought 'these guys are great but it doesn't sound good in here' ? You wouldn't want that to be you now.. If you wouldn't skimp on your bass gear then don't on PA stuff either. Much like bass gear, inexpensive stuff can work well as long as it's correctly setup. I appreciate most of us can't afford 20 thousand watts of EAW or Turbo Sound stuff but the suggestions as mentioned above and even Peavey stuff will see you well.
