1.
LOL. Phil Collins was awesome. So was John Goodsall and Robin Lumley etc. I much prefer early days Percy Jones on his wall. I don't care for his tone on the example added by low registerhead. Davo
I'm with you, Davo - that was the OP's post, not mine! Give me Brand X Percy any day... :-)
2.
Was that a factory finish, or a refin? I know that 'cherry' was an option.
It's a refin, according to the seller. And you're right - mine was cherry!
3. As part of my usual New Year rationalisation of my little collection, here's a bit of a 'Marmite' bass, I suspect... 1999 Stingray 5, in a very fetching pearlescent purple with a mirror pickguard. I bought it from chaypup last year, and it's lovely, but the older I get, the less biddable my gorilla mitts are it seems, and the 17.5mm string spacing is becoming a bit of a struggle. In good overall condition - there's a couple of minor marks on the front, a little bit of buckle rash on the back, and 2 small dents in the tip of the headstock. It plays beautifully, and sounds big and fat. The neck and frets have no issues and everything works as it should. The colour may not be to everyone's taste, so coupled with my wife's exasperation at the dwindling space in the spare room, it's priced to sell. NOW SOLD
4. Takes me back. Mine was maroon. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Shergold-Marathon-4-string-bass-guitar-Big-Plate-Mk1-pre-1980/221984897737
5. It's not keef, it's keefybaby, OK?
6. That's lovely. Does the ACG string anchor allow for the use of standard strings, or do they have to be double ball ends?
7.
Just discovered his work over the Xmas break and wondered if anyone else is into his stuff? Gonna start exploring some Brand X. Some interesting techniques he uses in this series:
You've a real treat in store - there's lots of extraordinary stuff that he did with Brand X, a good deal more edgy and exuberant than in the example in your original post, IMHO. My favourite albums by them are probably Product and Unorthodox Behaviour, but it's all going to be an eye-opener, frankly. Enjoy!
8.
A slightly less ridiculous price is an improvement ... but it's still a ridiculous price.
...especially when you could get this one (admittedly with a few blemishes and without all the bells and whistles) for less than a quarter of the price... 9. I'm guessing from the shape of the pickup cases and the horizontal selector switch it's got alnico pickups, not ceramic... any idea?
10. Don't worry, just found it - 18.5mm
11. Hi, nice bass! What's the string spacing at the bridge, please? I had a look online, but had difficulty finding info on that.
12.
Being of a generous disposition, I'm going to imagine a virtual smiley face after that speeling misteak.
And what are conventions, if not to ignore, then gently poke fun at?
13.
Having spent time in close proximity to the education business, about 40 years, these days, a lot of teachers can't spell and don't know their grammar. Last month, in a class taken by a deputy head the kids were asked to come up with rhyming words. One said "smile" and "crocodile". The teacher said "don't be silly that doesn't rhyme"!! True story. I blame league tables for teacher training colleges. Teachers aren't allowed to fail because it's bad for business. [/serious]
Some teachers had no sense years ago. Never mind grammer. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-town-rejects-solar-panels-amid-fears-they-suck-up-all-the-energy-from-the-sun-a6771526.html
14. Shame on all of us for reacting like this when we get a whiff of our own long-lost youthful exuberance. We're cynical old gits trying to be our parents. Good luck to them. I fear they'll turn into us soon enough.
15. Some pictures would be good...
16. Bought a very striking SR5 from Chay, and he was a real gent - excellent communication, bomb-proof packing, and a brand new set of strings thrown in to boot. A pleasure to deal with.
17. Lovely. I had one just like it back in the day. Pity I can't afford to indulge myself! GLWTS.
18. A fantastic bass, and an excellent price. I already have one almost identical to yours, otherwise I'd be very interested! GLWTS.
19.
I have the BH800 going through a RS210 & RS212.....monster sound. Great low end, but nice and zingy when I need it.
Thanks for that, nightsun - I should have mentioned that in the intervening period I tried out a RS210 and RS212, and they were amazingly powerful, but the sound didn't really float my boat. They just seemed to lack a bit of presence, but as I'm used to the ridiculously glassy top end you get from EBS cabs, perhaps my expectations were slightly skewed! I'll definitely be having a look at the K series though...
20.
Hi Lowregisterhead, I was wrong, the power rating is the same at 400 watts for the K210 and RS210. All the best, Phil.
Thanks Phil - I may well get hold of a K210 (or maybe 2!) in the near future. Incidently, I won't blow our cover online, but we do know each other in real life....
21. Takes me back - I had a Roadster II back in the day. Love the love-heart tuner ears! Best of luck with the sale.
22. Whaddya gonna give me? It looks just like a Telefunken U-47...
23. I was just going to say that I rather like the knobs...
24. I'm not intending to undermine the guy's sale in any way, 'cos £425.92 is still a great price, but I was astonished to see that GAK are currently selling these new for £745! Despite having downsized from an EBS 410 to a TC 210 & 112 recently, I have to admit I'm tempted...
