TC Electronic RS210 vs. K210 Cabs
lowregisterhead replied to lowregisterhead's topic in Amps and Cabs
Hi, wondered if anyone on this thread can help me out? I've recently upgraded my head to a Markbass little Mark tube ( 500w @ 4 ohm ) and now fancy upgrading my Ashdown ABM 410 to something more modern and lightweight. I tried out the Markbass 210 and it was lovely boy someone just round the corner from me is selling 2 of the TC Electronic k210 cabs for really a very good price so I'm certainly considering it. So my question is this; As there is only the 1 speakon connector on the back of my head, if I daisy chain the cabs in series, head to cab and then cab to head ( have I got that right? ) then would these cabs that have a power rating of 400w at 8ohms each become a power rating of 800w at 4ohm? The whole thing confuses me to be honest. I'm also looking at these from the point of view that I could maybe use just the one cab for a small rehearsal or jam so would only have the 400w @ 8ohm. With a 500w 4ohm head, I guess I'd have to be very careful with the output from the amp? Thanks all, keep it low!
If you daisy chain two 8 ohm cabs, the parallel connection will result in a 4 ohm load. If your amp had 2 parallel speakon outputs, it would still amount to the same thing regardless of which way you connect them. As far as I am aware, you can add the power ratings of the cabs together, so 2 x 400W = 800W. As long as you don't go below the minimum load on your amp (4 ohms) and run it sensibly, you shouldn't have a problem. In my experience, the potential for damage to the cabs has got more to do with how you run them, rather than the maximum output of the amp itself - in other words if you're stupidly loud and heavily EQ'd you can blow a speaker or horn with a 500W or a 1000W head. You could do damage more effortlessly with a 1000W, granted, but don't assume that because the figures all match up that you can go up to 11 with impunity! I run a GK MB Fusion 800W head into 2 x EBS Proline 210's, but with a custom-made series connection, as the cabs are 4 ohms each and the amp's minimum load is 4 ohms, so in series the amp is running into an 8 ohm load. If I used the standard parallel connections, the load would be 2 ohms, too low for the amp. The higher 8 ohm load limits the amp's output, but there's still plenty of headroom so I get loads of power and volume, but I still take it easy - there are limitations! I tried a pair of the TC K210's, and although they were definitely lighter, they weren't as tonally robust, and started to break up at a lower volume than the EBS cabs. As soon as you go down the lightweight route, there's always going to be something of a trade-off. I've used TC cabs, Markbass cabs, EBS Neo cabs, and even experimented with reloading standard cabs with Neo drivers to save weight, but they just don't shift as much air, and to my ears the sound lacks 'heft', for want of a better word. That's not to say a lightweight setup wouldn't suit your purposes, but proceed with caution! -
When I put a J-Retro into my DJ5, for me, it transformed the bass. I'd say definitely give it a chance, but if it really doesn't float your boat, like JapanAxe said, flog it and use the cash to get a passive loom made!

...but getting slightly 'off topic'. Welcome Tim!
I was about to say , just within striking distance of chandlers then " perhaps you can join me in my campaign to try and get them to stock more than just Rotosound swing 66's the last time i tried to get flats there i had to take a set that had been " traded" packaging was about 10-15 years old ... I get that they like " vintage" but damn .
I agree they have a rather shambolic feel to the place, but they do great repair and custom work, and they have a PLEK machine, so they're not exactly behind the times... gawd knows I'd much rather go in there than the likes of Andertons... :-)

Marcin bought my Apogee Duet - a very friendly, straightforward sale. Thanks!

Welcome Tim... perhaps I might see you in Charlie Chandler's sometime...

For sale are a pair of Celestion BN10-200X Green Label 200 watt Neodymium 10's, 8 ohm, bought new, used for one rehearsal and one gig in my 210 cab as an experiment in going lightweight, but not to my taste. About three hours total use, so virtually as new [s]£125.[/s] Now £100 including postage in the UK.

Wonder why this didn't sell? Little man.
lowregisterhead replied to Jwlkr1991's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Perhaps this is how international drug cartels communicate... "Search for 'Fender bass little man' on eBay - the photo will show the location for the drop". I know, I've probably been watching too many late night TV movies... -
Excellent. It oozes youthful optimism and a musicality that belies your tender years! (I'm old.) Best of luck with the band.

SOLD Musicman Stingray 5 'Thru-Neck' SOLD
lowregisterhead replied to lowregisterhead's topic in Basses For Sale
Another thing you may wish to consider is this.... I Googled the descriptor you have used in your thread header and Google does capture it, but it only appears on Page 3. In my experience, if people are using a search engine to find something quickly, they rarely get as far as page three before boredom sets in. Given that the correct product name for this bass is a Music Man Stingray 5 Neck Through and it is For Sale you may wish to consider getting all those in the header/tags. There's nothing wrong with leaving Thru-Neck in there as well as it covers all bases (or basses :-). It may make a difference, it may not. Why not give yourself every chance though?
Very useful info, thank you. -
The Marketplace is a funny old place mate. I would stick with it for a while unless you're desperate to get it gone. It's only been up for just over a month. Some people don't check in here unless they are looking for something in particular. I have to say, if it was a 4, it would have gone already. Being a 5 excludes a percentage right out of the gate. The longer it's here, the longer I can drool at the pictures :-)
Fair comment and good advice, sir. I shall persevere! -
This is sooooo wrong, it's great. Beat it, in major key.
It's very useful educationally. Shows students how key choice makes a massive impact on a composition.
Of course. But you forgot the smiley at the end. You are joking, aren't you?? :-) -

If you like Stingrays, how about one of these?? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/278059-rare-usa-lakland-55-76-stingray-5/ http://basschat.co.uk/topic/278055-sei-ashbirdseye-maple-custom-5-string http://basschat.co.uk/topic/282718-musicman-stingray-5-neck-through-probably-the-only-one-in-the-uk -
Through body strings for 35" Lakland 55-01 (5 string bass)
lowregisterhead replied to SiriusBlack's topic in Bass Guitars
Yup! Mine is wearing XL Nickel Wound 130 - 45 Super Long, and they fit fine. In terms of tone difference I have no idea. It had these strings, through the bridge when I got it and sounded great, so I replaced like for like on the basis of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.
I'd also recommend the D'Addario Nickels Super Longs, the exact model is EXL170-5SL (gauges 45/65/80/100/130). I have 3 Laklands 5's and they are consistently good on all of them - great clarity, consistent tone and tension, long lasting. They're also pretty readily available from a few UK eBay sellers for about £25 a set. Lakland's own brand Nickel Mediums are quite nice too, although not as bright as the D'Addarios, and much harder to get hold of (gauges 45/65/85/105/128). -
Wal MkII 5-string(s)...
lowregisterhead replied to lowregisterhead's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I'm no expert, but even a cursory comparison of pictures of a genuine Rolex Submariner and the one the seller is offering show some substantial discrepancies... I'm not saying it's a fake, but the overall impression is not good. It poses the question - would you buy a used Wal from this man? -
I wouldn't have said I was really a Prince fan, but there are 3 tracks of his that I think are just sublime: 1. Sign O' the Times... an impeccably sparse groove, and great lyrics. 2. The Most Beautiful Girl In The World... for the snare drum sound alone! 3. Black Sweat... another masterclass in minimalism, and this wonderfully wry video...
The Wal is back up on eBay!! This just feels dodgy
Here's the new listing... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wal-5-String-Electric-Bass-Guitar-1990-/152061851581 ...and the weird neck pickup alignment thing still going on. Surely that's not a misplaced nut, as someone suggested... -
SOLD Sei Ash/Birdseye Maple Custom 5-string
lowregisterhead replied to lowregisterhead's topic in Basses For Sale
My long lost Sei is hands down the best bas I've ever played. It just felt very special. This seems to me like a very unique instrument and a personal spec selection.
Yes, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't tick the boxes for someone else, of course. Why not come over and try it... -
Back in the late 90's I used to dep with a band who had no backline, an electronic kit, and everything in-ear. Cutting edge at the time, but for me, it was a soulless and gutless experience, despite their big Turbo Sound rig front of house. I would imagine, even with improvements in audio technology since then, it would be the same for the audience. The ambience created by a live show would be utterly lost.
