The Sting tune works well.
For me, the end result is the track is completely at odds with the lyric. It's lost all its jauntiness. And the Happy cover's lost its groove too - another triumph (?) of style over substance. The originals were great - why tinker with them for no appreciable benefit? Great playing, but like a Steely Dan tribute band, I don't see the point. If you were to be cynical about it, it's just an easy way of getting attention for the arranger and performers. No doubt they'll get booked for more studio and live gigs from the exposure/controversy. So on that basis, I'm helping their cause, it seems...

Go West..remember them....tidy basslines...Pino?
lowregisterhead replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
Go West always just sounds like a total drum machine backing to me. Am I alone on that?
The sound had more to do with Gary Stevenson's production - I've seen them live several times over the years (on the same bill a few times) and they always have a fearsome band. The classic early lineup (Pino on bass, Tony Beard on drums, Alan Murphy on guitar, Peter-John Vettese on keyboards) was astonishing, but the current live band are no slouches either. They gig regularly - go and check them out. -
+1 for an East preamp for extra punch - I have a Lakland DJ5 that I fitted with with an East J-Retro and it transformed the bass. I also removed the stock pickups (Hansons I think) and fitted Delanos which I'm very happy with - they have the crisp detail that could qualify as a 'Marcus' type tone, but might not be to everyone's taste. They have plain covers, with no pole pieces showing though - not sure which model they are.

For sale is a beautiful Sei Custom 5 made for me by Martin and John at The Gallery in Camden last year. It has an ash body, a flame maple top, and birdseye maple neck and fingerboard. It's fitted with Bartolini pickups, the rear pickup installed in the 'Stingray' position, with a 3-way coil tap switch, and a soapbar at the neck, giving it a huge range of tones, further enhanced by a John East Uni-pre. The controls are stacked volume/pickup pan, stacked treble (with bright pull)/bass, stacked mid/sweep, and passive tone with active/passive push/pull. (More info on this incredibly versatile preamp can be found here: http://www.east-uk.c...uni-pre-4k.html ) It balances beautifully and weighs in at 4.4kg on my scales. It's 35" scale, with bridge or through body stringing. The neck is 48mm wide and 21mm deep at the nut, and 64mm wide and 23mm deep at the 12th fret, with 19mm string spacing at the bridge. The bass is in immaculate condition. No trade offers please, this is for straight sale only. Drop me a PM if you want to come and see it. I'm close to junction 10 of the M25. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be supplied, along with a selection of amps to try it through... NOW SOLD

I've played it... it's not for me :-) -
Very pretty... nice detail at the 12th fret too... and it's £100 cheaper on Bass Gear's website...
If so, that's pretty good value for money IMHO. Only 75p a minute. Whether my buttocks could stand sitting down for that long is another matter.

I don't know about you, but when I sit down my buttocks tend to do the same. They don't stand.
OK, perhaps I'll re-phrase that.... "Whether my buttocks could bear sitting down for that long is another matter." Bare buttocks. See what I did there?
If you're on the petergabriel.com newsletter mailing list, you'll have already seen the presale links. Front and centre seats are yours for $250 each. I'm not sure how this sits in the scheme of US gig ticket pricing, but that's £180 at today's exchange rate.

That'll be because they play for four hours in the US, not just the 90 minutes we get over here.
If so, that's pretty good value for money IMHO. Only 75p a minute. Whether my buttocks could stand sitting down for that long is another matter.

I think they should rename the tour "Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock".

Wal MkIII Fretless 6 String
lowregisterhead replied to CamdenRob's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Very nice indeed. I'm after a fretted 5 myself, but the two on eBay at the moment are a tad pricey... anyone seen any others? -
Cocktail sticks (harder wood) are better than matchsticks (softer wood). I think Schaller straplocks now come with two sizes of screw; i.e. a pair of larger ones too.
Indeed they do. A pair of 'standard' length, and an extra long pair. Referring to an earlier post, they shouldn't rattle when you've got the bass on, if they're fitted properly. I can't comment on other makes.
LOL. Phil Collins was awesome. So was John Goodsall and Robin Lumley etc. I much prefer early days Percy Jones on his wall. I don't care for his tone on the example added by low registerhead. Davo
I'm with you, Davo - that was the OP's post, not mine! Give me Brand X Percy any day... :-)

A Purple Marathon??
lowregisterhead replied to lowregisterhead's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Was that a factory finish, or a refin? I know that 'cherry' was an option.
It's a refin, according to the seller. And you're right - mine was cherry! -
As part of my usual New Year rationalisation of my little collection, here's a bit of a 'Marmite' bass, I suspect... 1999 Stingray 5, in a very fetching pearlescent purple with a mirror pickguard. I bought it from chaypup last year, and it's lovely, but the older I get, the less biddable my gorilla mitts are it seems, and the 17.5mm string spacing is becoming a bit of a struggle. In good overall condition - there's a couple of minor marks on the front, a little bit of buckle rash on the back, and 2 small dents in the tip of the headstock. It plays beautifully, and sounds big and fat. The neck and frets have no issues and everything works as it should. The colour may not be to everyone's taste, so coupled with my wife's exasperation at the dwindling space in the spare room, it's priced to sell. NOW SOLD
