  1. I keep coming back to this. I love the clean lines and simplicity, but sadly the colour's really not for me. It's got me thinking how much would a refin cost! 🤔 GLWTS.
  2. This is a near-impossible question to answer. There are so many variables that contribute to what any one player would perceive as being a great B sounding string - construction, scale length, string type and gauge, electronics, amp setup... the list is endless. As has already been suggested, I would encourage you to go to as many (preferably bass specialist) shops as you can, and try out literally everything. You might be surprised by what will float your boat. My personal preference is for 35"+ scale just because in my experience, it adds more tension and clarity to what can otherwise be a rubber band added to a 4-string bass as some kind of afterthought. Other people's experiences will obviously vary! At the last count (yes, I have a list) I've owned approaching 200 basses over the 50 years I've been playing, the majority of which have been fivers. The best B strings for me have been a Lakland 55-94 and 55-02, a Dingwall Afterburner, if you can cope with the fan frets, and I'm currently using a Mayones Jabba Custom EP VF5, which is also multi-scale. None of them are the Holy Grail, but they're all very good, and leave most of the other contenders in the dust. In my opinion. The perfect bass probably doesn't exist of course, but you can have great fun looking for it!
  3. Yup, it arrived in late June, so past the point of no return now. Thanks for the suggestion. I've got a Mike Pope preamp sitting in the drawer, though... 🤔
  4. Being passive isn't the only factor - my Laklands are just more up my street, as I mentioned. It's still a lovely bass, but perhaps stands a better chance of being moved on unadulterated! 😉
  5. Or me at Chieveley Services, with a Cherryburst Lakland 55-02 in 2014. I had a purple Stingray 5 around the same time, but I sold that a couple of years later to someone else. He might have been from Cardiff! 😄
  6. Oh, go on... you know you really need another one... treat yourself!! 😄
  7. The cull continues. Up for sale is a beautiful S23 Rob made for me at the beginning of last year, not long after they started up production again. It's in a custom Satin Black finish, with Tri-max pickups in soapbar cases and 'Paramatrix' 4-band EQ, making it really tonally versatile. With these specs, it cost a shade over £3500, so as I understand Status aren't taking orders at the moment, you can save yourself a grand and a long wait! It's light (4kg) but being headless, it feels even lighter on a strap. It's in immaculate condition, complete with its Status-branded Hiscox case, all the paperwork, and I'm throwing in two new sets of double ball end Hotwires strings as well. If it's such a fabulous instrument, why am I selling it, you may well ask. The main reasons are I have too many basses, and I find myself reverting to my old Laklands, which just feel like home, so it's time to move it on (along with several others that I've also just listed on here). Collection preferred from near Woking in Surrey, but I can post within the UK at the buyer's cost and risk. Sorry, no trade offers please. NOW SOLD
  8. PRICE REDUCED TO £1750 Up for sale is my NS Design CR5 Radius bass, in Amber. Bought from The Bass Centre just last year, and in near-new condition, apart from a small dink on the upper edge of the body shown in the photos. Light for a fiver at 4.2kg, and sits beautifully on the knee or a strap. Incredibly versatile magnetic / piezo pickup system with 2-band preamp. Specs are here: https://thinkns.com/instrument/the-ns-design-radius-bass-guitar/ns-design-radius-bass-guitar-cr/ https://www.basscentre.com/ns-design-radius-bass-guitar/ns-design-cr5-radius-bass.html Comes complete with gigbag. An amazing sounding and innovative design of bass, but I find myself reverting to my old Laklands, which just feel like home, so it's time to move it on. Collection preferred from near Woking in Surrey, but I can post within the UK at the buyer's cost and risk. Sorry, no trade offers please.
  9. PRICE REDUCED TO £595 For sale is a Tune TWB-5 bass, in Koa. I bought this as a bit of an an experiment, as they have a reputation for being great basses, and they are! Excellent build quality, with great pickups and preamp, easy to play, and amazing tonal versatility. 34" scale, 45mm at the nut, 18mm string spacing at the bridge. Controls are pickup pan, master volume, mid, bass, treble. It's in good order, apart from some buckle marks on the back, and weighs 4.5kg, but sits comfortably on a strap. According to the previous owner, this is is an earlier Japanese-made version, before manufacturing was moved to Korea. It's a lovely bass, and has a bit of the look of an Alembic or a Pangborn Warlord about it, which is one of the things that drew me to it in the first place, but I find myself reverting to my old Laklands, which just feel like home, so it's time to move it on. Collection preferred from near Woking in Surrey, but I can post within the UK at the buyer's cost and risk. Sorry, no trade offers please.
  10. Up for sale is a MM Stingray 5 Special, with an ebony fingerboard and a rather fetching Smoked Chrome finish, now discontinued I believe. I bought it last year, but despite the fabulous build quality and finish, being light for a fiver at 4.3kg with great balance, fabulous Stingray tones, and being so easy to play, I find myself reverting to my old Lakland 55-94, which just feels like home. Immaculate condition, complete with MM branded Mono semi-rigid case. Collection preferred from near Woking in Surrey, but I can post within the UK at the buyer's cost and risk. Sorry, no trade offers please. NOW SOLD

  11. PRICE REDUCED TO £1750 Up for sale is a brand new Dingwall SP-1, their new P/J passive bass. I got it from Bass Freaks in Belgium a couple of weeks ago, as there's very few, if any, in circulation in the UK as yet. Most dealers over here won't have any stock for some time, so here's a chance to get hold of one now. It's light (4kg), responsive, tonally very versatile, and really easy to play, but I've been using active basses since the 80's, and just I find myself reverting to my old Laklands, which still feel like home. As new, unmarked, plastic still on the pickups, and comes complete with gigbag and tool kit. On Andertons website, the list price will be £2199 when they finally arrive on these shores, so I'm taking a hit on the price, but I suppose that's the cost of early adoption! Specs are here: https://dingwallguitars.com/bass/sp1/ Collection preferred from near Woking in Surrey, but I still have the original shipping carton, so can post within the UK at the buyer's cost and risk. Sorry, no trade offers please.
  12. Welcome from an exiled Aberdonian. And another plus 1 for what Acebassmusic said...
  13. I don't gig a lot these days, but I did a very sweaty gig in Basingstoke last night with a soul/rare groove band. An appreciative crowd, and a good time was had by all, but dear god, it was hot! In that level of humidity, the skin softens, the strings get sticky, and this morning my fingertips and thumb really hurt. No proper blisters, but it was a close run thing. I obviously need to practice more...
  14. In my experience 'the mixer' is usually the lead singer, who more often than not owns the PA. I feel your pain.
  15. Never discuss it with a priest. They're all guitarists.
  16. Apparently I joined in December 2007. Hardly seems possible. I don't think I was on Bassworld, but I used to hang out on News Groups like The Bottom Line in the late 90's/early 2000's - anyone remember them??
  17. I have one of these in Pearl White - I can attest that it's a fantastic bass. The standard of build and finish far exceeds its price point, and the tonal versatility and punch are exceptional. Whoever buys this will not be disappointed! GLWTS.
  18. It's not. It's plain, albeit high quality leather, 4" wide and punched at a fixed length of 47", although it could obviously be shortened. I had it custom made to spread the load of a back-breaking Wal 5-string I owned a couple of years ago. I'll put up a couple of more detailed pictures shortly.
  19. I wish someone would buy this - I have a 55-94 and a modded SK5-CL already... do I need a 55-02 as well? Probably not, but I'm sorely tempted!! GLWTS.
  20. Thanks Dan. It is the zenith of bass amps in my opinion. Unfortunately I don't do gigs big enough or frequently enough any more to justify keeping it, and have a Reidmar 502 and a couple of Proline 210s that do the job quite well when I do. It is lovely though!
  21. If you buy basses and avoid mentioning to your significant other that you've even bought one, never mind how much it cost, you're amongst friends here! Welcome back into the bass playing fold.
  22. Lovely. What's the weight please?
